December CPI: The Good, the Bad, and the Expensive

(Mike Maharrey, Money Metals News Service) Have you ever gone to a movie everybody raved about and thought, ‘Meh. I don’t get all the hype?’

That’s how I felt reading the December Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.

I mean, it wasn’t awful.

But it wasn’t good either.

On balance, the CPI has been telling the same story for several months: price inflation is stubbornly sticky.

But since some of the data was better than expected, the mainstream threw a party. As CNBC put it, “U.S. stocks popped on Wednesday for their best day since November, on the back of the cooler-than-expected inflation reading.”

The not-so-bad CPI revived hope that the Federal Reserve might be able to keep the easy money flowing. In other words, people are giddy about a “cooler” inflation report because it will allow the central bank to start creating more inflation.

The December CPI Numbers

On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.4 percent, according to the BLS report. That comes on the tail of a 0.3 percent increase the previous month. On an annual basis, the CPI rose by 2.9 percent.

The CPI has gone up for the last three months, from 2.4 percent in September, 2.6 percent in October, and 2.7 percent in November. The last time we saw a 2.9 percent handle was in July. In fact, the annual CPI was only 3.1 percent in June 2023.

It’s also worth noting that a 0.4 percent monthly CPI increase annualizes to 4.8 percent.

The “good” news was on the core inflation front. Stripping out more volatile food and energy prices, core CPI rose 0.2 percent in December. The expectation was for a 0.3 percent rise.

This dropped the annual core CPI to 3.2 percent, a dip from the 3.3 percent level in November.

But core CPI has been mired around this level for months. Core inflation was also 3.2 percent in July.

It’s also important to note that all these numbers are far higher than the mythical 2 percent target.

Keep in mind that the CPI doesn’t tell the entire story of inflation. The government revised the CPI formula in the 1990s so that it understates the actual rise in prices. Based on the formula used in the 1970s, CPI is closer to double the official numbers. So, if the BLS was using the old formula, we’re looking at CPI closer to 6 percent. And using an honest formula, it would probably be worse than that.

Looking more closely at the data, we find that rising energy prices drove the overall CPI higher. Gasoline prices rose 4.3 percent in December, pushing the energy index up by 2.6 percent. Even so, that index is still down -0.5 percent from a year ago.

Food prices both at home and in restaurants were up in December, rising by 0.3 percent on a monthly basis.

In fact, prices were up in every single category.

How Was This CPI Report Good News?

This CPI report was good news basically just because it wasn’t bad news.

The numbers weren’t great, but the annual CPI data hit projections, and the core CPI data was better than expected.

But it wasn’t good by any objective measure.

When you dissect the data on its own merits, there’s not much to celebrate other than it could have been worse. Price inflation has been running at the same level for nearly a year and that level is far above the Fed’s stated target.

Even so, the Federal Reserve has cut interest rates by a full percentage point over the last four months, starting with a supersized rate cut in September.

In fact, the central bank started loosening monetary policy when it quietly announced that it would begin to taper balance sheet reduction in June.

Keep in mind what this pivot to rate cuts and the wind-down of balance sheet reduction actually means – the Federal Reserve is ramping up the inflation machine even as it declares victory over inflation. It means more credit expansion and more money flowing into the economy.

In other words, by declaring victory over price inflation and easing its monetary policy, the Fed is effectively committing to creating more inflation.

The data reflects this.

Even as CPI has been mired at the same level for the last several months, the money supply is increasing. This is – by definition – inflation.

The M2 money supply bottomed a little over a year ago at $20.60 trillion. Since then, it has crept upward. As of November, it was at 21.4 trillion. That’s the highest level since October 2022.

The bottom line is the inflation dragon isn’t dead. Sure, the Fed might have knocked it to the mat. But it’s not down for the count.

Meanwhile, the Fed is in a Catch-22. It needs to keep interest rates higher for longer to finish the job on inflation. (I would argue it needs to raise rates.) At the same time, it needs to cut rates to keep the debt-riddled bubble economy from cracking.

Biden Treasury Sec. Dishes to Colbert on Doing Magic Mushrooms During China Trip

(Julianna Frieman, Headline USA) Outgoing Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen spoke at length about getting “high” Wednesday during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Yellen, 78, giddily addressed the time she ate mushrooms that can have psychedelic effects during a state visit to Beijing in July 2023. Colbert asked the giggling Biden administration official, “Are you high right now?”

Yellen joked that she “asked for simple hallucinogenic mushrooms before coming on” in response to Colbert questioning whether he had a “wolf head” or a “spider’s body.”

She told the host that he was “safe” before detailing her experience dining in China.

“We landed in Beijing for very high-stakes meetings,” Yellen said before talking about the dinner. “We went to a restaurant that serves Hunanese food.”

Yellen said she learned from a Chinese social media “tweet storm” that the “delicious” mushrooms she consumed are hallucinogenic if cooked incorrectly.

“They were cooked properly,” she claimed. “We had no idea that there was anything about these mushrooms until we realized that this had become a media frenzy.”

Colbert took his interview with Yellen to another level when he asked the Treasury secretary, “Have you ever inhaled?”

“I think the answer is yes,” Yellen said, which prompted the audience to clap and cheer.

Egged on by the applause, Yellen revealed that she started smoking pot after graduating college.

“The first time I smoked these cigarettes, ugh, it was awful,” Yellen said. “I couldn’t imagine how anybody could inhale.”

Yellen said she spent weeks practicing smoking cigarettes until she “finally” learned how to inhale.

“Well, so, we smoked pot. It was OK. Neither here nor there,” she said.

Yellen said she “didn’t do it again”—until she found herself smoking three packs of cigarettes a day for 10 years.

“Within six months, I was smoking three packs a day,” Yellen said, revealing she did so for one decade. “And then I quit cold turkey.”

It is unclear whether China may have exploited Yellen’s substance-abuse problems during her visits to the rival nation, which has been plotting to promote an alternate global reserve currency that would supplant the U.S. dollar.

In December, the Treasury Department acknowledged that China had succeeded in hacking into its workstations and gaining access to data after somehow obtaining a security key.

Karine Jean-Pierre Nearly Cries Making Excuses for Biden’s Poor Exit Polls

(Julianna Frieman, Headline USA) White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre appeared on the verge of tears Wednesday as she made excuses for President Joe Biden’s dismal exit polls.

Jean-Pierre appeared on PBS NewsHour the night of Biden’s farewell address, where she was pressed by the anchor about the lame duck Democrat’s final jobs approval rating.

Only 42% of Americans approved of Biden’s jobs performance, while 50% disapproved, according to a PBS News/NPR/Marist poll.

With glossy eyes, Jean-Pierre claimed Americans had not yet felt the impact of the Biden administration.

“The American people have gone through a lot in these four years. And so, we understand that it’s going to take a little bit of time for them, for folks to see the impact that this administration has had,” Biden’s mouthpiece spouted off.

She added that non-specific “facts” and “data” prove Biden wasn’t a disaster, but her words contradicted the outgoing 82-year-old president’s flailing final presidential favorability rating.

Approximately 58% of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Biden as he prepares to leave office, CNN reported. Just 33% of those polled said they have a favorable view of Biden.

More specifically, Biden was underwater on all issues.

He brought in net-negative approval results on immigration (31%), foreign affairs (32%), the economy (33%), healthcare policy (43%), environmental policy (44%) and protecting American democracy (46%), according to the outlet.

In his farewell address, Biden plagiarized former President Dwight Eisenhower by warning Americans of a “tech industrial complex” — despite years of Democrats weaponizing big tech companies including Amazon, Apple, Google and Meta against President-elect Donald Trump.

“He’s trying to be the new Eisenhower,” former Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen said Thursday morning on Fox and Friends.

Thiessen noted that working-class voters took down Biden and his big tech buddies by electing Trump, who only had the backing of one social media mogul, Elon Musk.

“The idea that Joe Biden was defeated by some new oligarchy? He was actually defeated by working-class Americans,” Thiessen explained.

Trump Reveals New Admin Blacklist Including ‘Bird Brain’

(Julianna Frieman, Headline USA) President-elect Donald Trump revealed Wednesday the ill-famed 11 people he would never let have a hand in his incoming administration—and they all suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Trump said he had already hired 1,000 “outstanding” employees to work in his incoming administration before name-dropping several “Republican” turncoats he would never want to touch his second presidency.

Trump blacklisted the following obstructionists from his administration: Charles Koch, John Bolton, Nikki Haley, Mike Pence, Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, Mark Milley, James Mattis and Mark Esper.

“In order to save time, money, and effort, it would be helpful if you would not send, or recommend to us, people who worked with, or are endorsed by, Americans for No Prosperity (headed by Charles Koch), ‘Dumb as a Rock’ John Bolton, ‘Birdbrain’ Nikki Haley, Mike Pence, disloyal Warmongers Dick Cheney, and his Psycho daughter, Liz, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, General(?) Mark Milley, James Mattis, Mark Yesper, or any of the other people suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, more commonly known as TDS,” Trump wrote on Truth Social . “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

On her SiriusXM podcast, Nikki Haley Live, Trump’s former United Nations ambassador turned primary rival claimed in mid-November that she turned down a job offer from Steve Witkoff, who came to be the president-elect’s pick for Middle East envoy.

“I have no interest in being in [Trump’s] cabinet,” Haley said at the time.

She has yet to respond to Trump’s Wednesday announcement.

Thursday morning, Bolton took to CNN to address his ban from the incoming Trump administration.

He said Trump and his allies were overconfident and “in the rapture.”

“For those who say that Trump is reformed, that he’s grown, that he’s gonna be a normal president, this is the kinda thing like the Mar-a-Lago press conference last week, that demonstrates he hasn’t changed at all,” Bolton told CNN This Morning anchor Kasie Hunt.

Pete Hegseth’s Hearing Was a ‘Template’ for Trump’s Cabinet to Sail Through Senate

(Julianna Frieman, Headline USA) Political analyst Mark Halperin said Wednesday that Defense Secretary-nominee Pete Hegseth’s confirmation hearing was a “template” for President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet to sail through Senate approval.

Hegseth did not flinch Tuesday as disgruntled Democrat senators tried to smear him with false allegations about women and drinking.

Halperin said the former Fox News host’s “momentum” will help Trump’s other nominees get confirmed.

“I think it helps every other nominee for three reasons. One is they now have a template about how to do this, how to prepare, how to pack the room with supporters, how to work the chair, the committee, how to make sure everybody’s got statements,” Halperin stated while hosting his “2Way” show. “No. 2, there’s momentum now.”

Halperin said “the train’s leaving” and urged senators to “get the government up and running” as Trump will be president on Monday. He mentioned “Republican pressure for unity” as his third reason, pointing to Hegseth’s promising exchange Tuesday with former GOP holdout Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.

“You don’t want to cross Trump,” Halperin emphasized, saying Hegseth’s hearing “helps them all.”

The 2Way host added, “I still think Tulsi Gabbard is currently the most endangered, but I still think she’s going to make it.”

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, one of Hegseth’s former colleagues, expressed a similar view to Halperin’s, telling his panelists Wednesday night that senators have nothing on Hegseth.

Sirius XM’s Megyn Kelly sat in Hegseth’s confirmation hearing, telling her audience on Tuesday, “I don’t think Pete Hegseth has trouble. I think he’s going to get confirmed. I don’t think anybody touched him.”

Kelly said she was “embarrassed” for Democrat senators who failed to tank Hegseth’s nomination, especially the “sh**ty” women who melted down during questioning.

Report: Biden’s Claims That He Would Have Won Election Brought ‘Deep Sadness’ to Kamala

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) Outgoing President Joe Biden has made it known that he thinks he could have defeated Donald Trump in the 2024 election had his own party not ousted him in July.

In an interview with USA Today this month,  Biden said that “based on the polling,” he had a better chance than Vice President Kamala Harris. He also said this month that he “could have beaten Trump, would have beaten Trump.”

Those remarks have brought Harris “deep sadness,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

“Harris has told close allies and family members she is disappointed in President Biden’s recent contention,” the Journal reported Wednesday, citing “people familiar with the conversations.”

“Harris has expressed deep sadness to people close to her over losing the election and Biden’s comments.”

A Harris spokesperson reportedly said that Biden and Harris have “developed a close working relationship as governing partners, but they have also built a strong friendship that continues today.” That friendship extended to their spouses, the spokesperson reportedly added.

Biden withdrew from the 2024 race amid what many have described as a “coup d’état,” with powerful Democratic politicians demanding he step aside, citing concerns over his age. At 81, Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history.

The argument was that a much younger and more popular Democrat would have a greater chance of beating Trump in 2024. These predictions backfired spectacularly.

Shortly after announcing his departure, Biden endorsed Harris as his successor, effectively blocking other Democrats from seeking the nomination. Harris’s campaign failed to gain traction, leading to Trump’s landslide victory.

Despite his frustration, Biden has “been careful not to place blame on Harris or her campaign.”

Many Democrats, however, blame Trump’s victory on Biden’s decision not to exit the race earlier in the year.

“Biden ran on the promise that he was going to be a transitional president, and in effect, have one term before handing it off to another generation,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., in an interview with The Post.

“I think his running again broke that concept — the conceptual underpinning of the theory that he would end the Trump appeal, he would defeat Trumpism and enable a new era,” Blumenthal added.

The pressure to oust Biden came from some of the most powerful figures in the Democratic Party, including former President Barack Obama, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Adding to this pressure were celebrities like George Clooney, who launched a media campaign demanding Biden step aside. These demands began after Biden’s disastrous performance in the first presidential debate with Trump.

Washington Post Cartoonist Arrested for Possessing Child Porn

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that prominent Washington Post cartoonist Darrin Bell has been arrested for possessing child pornography.

According to a press release, the Sacramento Valley Internet Crimes Against Children Detectives stated investigating Bell after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip was reportedly related to 18 files of child pornography with 134 videos linked to an account owned by the 49-year-old Bell.

Detectives served a warrant on Bell’s home Wednesday, recovering evidence related to the initial tip, as well as computer-generated/AI child porn.

Bell was arrested and is being held on $1 million bond. His initial court appearance is set for Friday.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office noted that this is its first case involving a charge of AI child porn.

“Bell is a well-known cartoonist, having been featured in several prominent publications,” the office added. “His booking photo is not available for public release, per California law.”

The Washington Post hasn’t commented on the matter as of the publication of this article. Online pundits quickly noted the irony of Bell’s arrest, given his previous work depicting Donald Trump as a deviant.

“Here’s one of Darrin Bell’s cartoons accusing Donald Trump of being a sex pervert. What a surprise,” said online poster Raw Egg Nationalist, whose real name is Charles Cornish-Dale.

The charge against Bell for possessing AI child porn comes about eight months after the Justice Department filed the first such case in the country. According to the DOJ, Steven Anderegg, 42, of Holmen, used a text-to-image generative artificial intelligence, or GenAI, model called Stable Diffusion to create thousands of realistic images of prepubescent minors.

In that case, Holmen’s attorney is disputing that some of the AI images found on his computer actually constituted child pornography. Since no children were abused to produce such images, the DOJ should have been held to a higher standard to be able to obtain a search warrant against Holmen in the first place, his lawyer argued in a November brief.

“This case is not about child pornography: the rules and analysis for those cases don’t apply here. This is all about obscenity and the First Amendment, and it’s a much, much different framework,” defense attorney Joseph Bugni argued in a Nov. 8 motion to suppress the search warrant.

“We don’t even have a sex act being displayed. We have nudity, which is not obscene and often not even enough to find that the image is child pornography,” he said.

“Here, there is nothing about the images that would make them into remotely patently offensive, hard- core pornography. Is it pornography? Maybe—probably, sure. But it doesn’t matter because the question is: Is the image patently offensive, hard-core pornography? Certainly not. Those descriptions just don’t cut it.”

A judge has yet to rule on the motion.

Quid Pro Joe Rants about ‘Oligarchy’ after Giving Presidential Medals to Billionaire Donors

(Ben Sellers, Headline USA) In what may be the most repugnantly hypocritical claim he has made since December, President Joe Biden used a farewell address to the nation to deliver an unhinged rant about the “oligarchy” taking root in America—just weeks after brazenly giving one of the nation’s highest civilian awards to several of his far-left donor friends.

Biden drew heavy criticism for the Jan. 4 ceremony where he offered his quid-pro-quo consolation prize, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, to at least two of the leading Democrat donors in his 2020 election, George Soros and Carlyle Group executive David Rubenstein.

It marked the second such occasion after he similarly gave a medal last May to top donor Michael Bloomberg. As Biden was the Democrat candidate at the time, that amounted to a de-facto fundraising operation.

However, he was never impeached, investigated or even condemned by congressional Democrats for the corrupt conflict of interests.

Nonetheless, Biden himself declared on Wednesday that “Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power and influence that really threatens our entire democracy, our basic rights and freedom” while denouncing the “tech industrial complex” in what appeared to be a direct dig at billionaire Trump supporter Elon Musk and more recent convert Mark Zuckerberg.

“Social media is giving up on fact checking,” Biden ranted. “The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit.”

Despite Zuckerberg having given more than $400 billion to help steal the 2020 election for Biden, he recently repudiated the Democrat administration for its illegal censorship efforts, saying during an interview with Joe Rogan that officials connected to the White House had “screamed” at him for allowing content critical of Biden’s policies—including satire and humor.

The Facebook founder and current Meta CEO has taken several measures in recent weeks to get into the good graces of incoming President-elect Donald Trump, including announcements that the company would abandon its biased fact-checking policies, get rid of its corporate commitment to so-called diversity, equity and inclusion, and even remove tampon dispensers from the men’s bathrooms. Nonetheless, many conservatives remain apprehensive of Zuckerberg’s true motives.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Musk—the founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, cofounder of OpenAI and current owner of social-media platform X, as well as being the world’s richest man—will have office space in the White House complex as part of his new role overseeing the semi-public Department of Government Efficiency alongside multimillionaire tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

While the Trump administration is putting the world’s wealthiest people to work in service of the popular mandate for which Trump—himself valued at around $7 billion—won a landslide election in November, Biden appeared to be beholden to his big-money donors.

In addition to the Medals of Freedom, he was slammed for unleashing a raft of presidential pardons in December, some of which appeared to include Chinese nationals who may have been doing business with the Biden family.

Shortly thereafter, he jetted off to St. Croix, where he is presumed to have stayed at the estate of another billionaire donor, software and media magnate Bill Neville.

According to the New York Post, the Biden family’s stay at the home, which is used as a VRBO rental, was valued at around $6,000. Biden is not believed to have paid for the visit, although Neville and his wife, Connie, did receive an invitation to a state dinner at the White House honoring French President Emanuel Macron.

Not surprisingly, Democrats have viciously targeted their ideological rivals for much less egregious variations of the same conduct.

Senate Democrats, led by segregationist Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., attempted to force out conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, the only black man currently on the bench, under the pretense that Thomas had failed to report trips with a longtime friend, Harlan Crow—even though the court’s ethics policies did not require him to do so at the time. The Democrat lawmakers made no mention of similar lapses by former liberal justices, including the late Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Biden Burns $7B on Empty Offices as COVID-Era Telework Drags On

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) President Joe Biden is pouring billions of dollars into unused office spaces despite allowing half of the federal workforce to work remotely years after the COVID-19 pandemic ended. Republicans affirmed that this is a glaring example of government waste.

According to a bombshell report by the House Oversight Committee, the federal government spends approximately $7 billion to lease and maintain office buildings. Meanwhile, over half of its 2.2 million civilian employees telework regularly or work remotely.

These findings, reported first by the New York Post, drew condemnation from House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., in a press statement issued Wednesday. “The lights may be on in federal buildings, but too many federal bureaucrats continue to work from home,” Comer said.

Comer added, “The House Oversight Committee’s investigation into prolonged pandemic-era telework reveals the Biden-Harris Administration has ceded too much authority to the federal union bosses, allowing their preference to work from home to take precedence over fulfilling agencies’ missions and serving the American people.”

Unlike Biden, President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to demand federal workers return fully to their respective offices, emphasizing that American taxpayers fund their salaries.

Comer affirmed that Trump was elected “to bring accountability to Washington,” pointing to the committee’s proposed solutions to “get federal employees back to their offices” and “dispose of unused and vacant federal property.”

This, Comer said, would “prioritize the needs of the American people over the wants of federal bureaucrats.”

In December 2024, Trump announced that workers who did not “come back into the offices” would be “dismissed” after Jan. 20, 2025, the day of his inauguration.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who Trump tapped to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, supported the move, arguing it would save taxpayer dollars.

“Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome: If federal employees don’t want to show up, American taxpayers shouldn’t pay them for the Covid-era privilege of staying home,” Musk and Ramaswamy wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

Trump’s incoming deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller echoed this sentiment in a fiery interview on Fox News:

‘Bobble Head’ Schiff Caught Napping During Pam Bondi’s Confirmation Hearing

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., went night-night during the historic confirmation hearing of Pam Bondi as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general on Wednesday—drawing widespread mockery and criticism on social media.

Schiff, who has served as California’s U.S. senator for less than two months, was caught on camera with his eyes closed during a portion of the hearing where Bondi fielded questions from senators, as she seeks to become the third woman ever to serve as the nation’s top law enforcement official.

The viral video of Schiff’s apparent nap was captured by political operative Ivan Raiklin, who attended the hearing and shared the footage on X.

“Nappy time,” Raiklin whispered in the video while zooming in on Schiff. Ironically, Schiff’s nap occurred as Bondi condemned the existence of “sleeper cells” in the U.S.

“Sleeper cell right there,” Raiklin quipped, adding, “There’s the sleeper cell,” as Bondi discussed foreign interference.

Conservative commentators quickly re-shared the clip to ridicule Schiff, with podcast host Benny Johnson’s post garnering over 1.5 million views.

“LEAKED VIDEO: Senator Adam Schiff falls asleep LIVE at Pam Bondi hearing in latest humiliation for the state of California,” Johnson wrote.

Another user echoed Johnson’s sentiment, sarcastically commenting that falling asleep was “safest thing [Schiff] could for this country. Let him sleep, less lies and hoaxes while he’s out.”

Republican politician Vernon Jones joined the criticism, writing, “Look at this bobble head turkey from California. His first senate confirmation hearing.  California’s best…shifty.”

X personality Paul A. Szypula questioned whether Schiff was “hungover,” while podcast host Nate Cain responded to the viral clip with laughing emojis.

Another user added, “This is how CA is represented all over the place.”

Schiff also faced backlash when he was awake—this time from Bondi herself, who shot back at his puzzling line of questioning about hypothetical scenarios if she were confirmed as Trump’s attorney general.

“We should be worried about the crime rate in California, it’s through the roof,” Bondi replied as Schiff asked whether she would investigate disgraced former Rep. Liz Cheney. “Your robberies are 87 percent higher than the national average. That’s what I want to be focused on, senator, if I am confirmed.”
