Largest Crypto Exchange Fined $4B; CEO Enabled Money Laundering

(Headline USA) The U.S. government dealt a massive blow to Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, which agreed to pay a roughly $4 billion settlement Tuesday as its founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to a felony related to his failure to prevent money laundering on the platform.

Zhao stepped down as the company’s chief executive, and Binance admitted to violations of the Bank Secrecy Act and apparent violations of sanctions programs, including its failure to implement reporting programs for suspicious transactions.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Binance processed transitions by illicit actors, “supporting activities from child sexual abuse, to illegal narcotics, to terrorism, across more than 100,000 transactions.”

Binance did not file a single suspicious activity report on those transactions, Yellen said, and the company allowed over 1.5 million virtual currency trades that violated U.S. sanctions— including ones involving Hamas’s al-Qassam Brigades, al-Qaeda and other criminals.

“Using new technology to break the law does not make you a disruptor, it makes you a criminal,” said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, who called the settlement one of the largest corporate penalties in the nation’s history.

It was unclear whether Garland—who has notoriously targeted conservative political causes and candidates—was once again using his weaponized Justice Department to selectively attack Binance or if the company, like others in the crypto world, had exploited loopholes in regulations and laws to game the financial system.

Conservatives have generally extolled cryptocurrency from an economic standpoint as a check against unfettered government inflationary spending policies, since it is more difficult to create new crypto coins.

However, the relative lack of attention in the crypto market has allowed criminals Sam Bankman–Fried to exploit it as the vehicle for masking their financial abuses, rattling investor confidence in the burgeoning market while drawing additional regulator scrutiny.

Zhao was perhaps best known as the chief rival to Bankman–Fried, the 31-year-old founder of the FTX, which was the second-largest crypto exchange before it collapsed last November. Bankman–Fried was convicted earlier this month of fraud for stealing at least $10 billion from customers and investors.

Zhao, meanwhile, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Seattle on Tuesday to one count of failure to maintain an effective anti-money-laundering program.

Magistrate Judge Brian A. Tsuchida questioned Zhao to make sure he understood the plea agreement, saying at one point: “You knew you didn’t have controls in place.”

“Yes, your honor,” he replied.

Binance wrote in a statement that it made “misguided decisions” as it quickly grew to become the world’s biggest crypto exchange, and said the settlement acknowledges its “responsibility for historical, criminal compliance violations.”

As part of Binance’s settlement agreement, the U.S. Treasury said the company will be subject to five years of monitoring and “significant compliance undertakings, including to ensure Binance’s complete exit from the United States.” Binance is a Cayman Islands limited liability company.

The judge set Zhao’s sentencing for Feb. 23, however it’s likely to be delayed. He faces a possible guideline sentence range of up to 18 months.

One of his attorneys, Mark Bartlett, noted that Zhao had been aware of the investigation since December 2020, and surrendered willingly even though the United Arab Emirates — where Zhao lives—has no extradition treaty with the U.S.

“He decided to come here and face the consequences,” Bartlett said. “He’s sitting here. He pled guilty.”

Zhao, who is married and has young children in the UAE, promised he would return to the U.S. for sentencing if allowed to stay there in the meantime.

“I want to take responsibility and close this chapter in my life,” Zhao said. “I want to come back. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here today.”

Zhao previously faced allegations of diverting customer funds, concealing the fact that the company was commingling billions of dollars in investor assets and sending them to a third party that Zhao also owned.

Over the summer, Binance was accused of operating as an unregistered securities exchange and violating a slew of U.S. securities laws in a lawsuit from regulators. That case was similar to practices uncovered after the collapse of FTX.

Zhao and Bankman–Fried were originally friendly competitors in the industry, with Binance investing in FTX when Bankman–Fried launched the exchange in 2019.

However, the relationship between the two deteriorated, culminating in Zhao announcing he was selling all of his cryptocurrency investments in FTX in early November 2022. FTX filed for bankruptcy a week later.

At this trial and in later public statements, Bankman–Fried tried cast blame on Binance and Zhao for allegedly orchestrating a run on the bank at FTX.

A jury found Bankman–Fried guilty of wire fraud and several other charges. He is expected to be sentenced in March, where he could face decades in prison.

With Total War Looming, Pentagon Seeks Record-High DEI Funding

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) With two hot conflicts raging in the Middle East and Ukraine, and a third one simmering in Taiwan, many observers—including former President Donald Trump—are warning that the U.S. is closer to World War 3 than at any previous point in history.

And with at least 56 attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria since Oct. 17—with 59 U.S. personnel getting injured in the process—some might even argue that the Pentagon already is embroiled in a hot conflict.

So how is the Defense Department responding? By seeking its biggest ever budget for diversity, equity and inclusion training.

“The FY 2024 President’s Budget request demonstrates the DoD’s commitment to DEIA and includes $114.7 million for dedicated diversity and inclusion activities,” the department wrote in its Strategic Management Plan for fiscal year 2022 to 2026, as reported by Fox News.

“This funding across the Military Departments, OSD Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute is investing in programs and initiatives aimed at furthering DEIA, and incorporating DEIA values, objectives, and considerations in how we do business and execute our missions.”

The DOD previously earmarked $68 million for DEI initiatives in fiscal year 2022 and $86.5 million in fiscal year 2023, according to reports from the Daily Wire.

But while the DEI proponents in the Biden administration look to get their pound of flesh from the defense budgeting process, other officials in the Pentagon seem to be taking more of a realist approach to the coming potential war.

Indeed, Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth issued a memorandum in February 2023 that rescinded all policies that were associated with the DOD COVID-19 vaccination mandate, which means that members who were discharged for refusing the vaccine can now rejoin the service.

Observers were also quick to notice a new U.S. Army commercial earlier this month that features all white men.

“Oh NOW you want the whites?” retired U.S. Marine Samuel Urban said in response to the propaganda. “Nah. We’re good.”

Biden’s Lavish $39M Thanksgiving Escape Amid Rising Inflation Criticism

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are gearing up for a lavish Thanksgiving holiday at a sprawling $39 million estate owned by private-equity billionaire David Rubenstein, located on Nantucket Island.

The Bidens, familiar with the ins and outs of Nantucket and having frequented the island for years, including previous holiday seasons, are no strangers to the grotesquely luxurious surroundings offered by Rubenstein’s property, as previously reported by the New York Post.

“Biden’s official agenda remains largely vacant, so insiders anticipate a laid-back sojourn — massive security presence aside, of course,” hinted the NY Post, alluding to the president’s relaxation throughout the Thanksgiving season.

The president’s sole official engagement is set to be a conversation with U.S. armed forces personnel on Thanksgiving.

However, this retreat unfolds against a backdrop of House Republicans expressing concerns about the inflationary pressures affecting Americans’ ability to afford holiday meals

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, drew attention to the mounting inflation by sharing a photo of President Biden seemingly bewildered, captioned, “Why’s Thanksgiving so expensive this year?” This comment echoed a recent USA Today report outlining the surge in prices.

Biden’s connection with billionaire Rubenstein traces back to the 1970s when Biden was a newly-elected senator for Delaware.

The president’s visits to Rubenstein’s estate reportedly began in 2014, showcasing a longstanding relationship, according to the NY Post.

While the president is said to have rented the luxurious estate for an undisclosed sum in the past, the NY Post highlighted that he won’t incur any expense for his stay at the compound, initially purchased by Rubenstein for around $8 million in 1998.

Jordan Subpoenas Infamous DOJ Prosecutor Who Allegedly Shielded Biden from Hunter Probe

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) House Republicans have escalated their pursuit in the investigation surrounding Hunter Biden by issuing a subpoena on Tuesday to Lesley Wolf, the chief deputy prosecutor working under Special Counsel David Weiss.

Allegations have surfaced, accusing Wolf of explicitly shielding President Joe Biden from the years-long criminal probe involving his embattled son, Hunter Biden.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, formally requested Assistant U.S. Attorney Wolf’s testimony before the committee. Jordan said that the goal is to obtain answers to damning allegations brought forth by IRS whistleblowers. Wolf has until Dec. 7 to voluntarily appear before the committee.

“Information available to the Committee suggests that you — either directly or by instructing others — are responsible for many of the decisions to deviate from standard investigative protocol during the Department’s investigation of Hunter Biden,” Jordan detailed in the six-page letter addressed to Wolf.

Specifically referencing testimony from IRS whistleblowers, Jordan alleged that Wolf interfered in the Hunter probe, allegedly tipping off “people very close” to the Biden family about an FBI interview request.

Moreover, investigators purportedly faced impediments when attempting to pose questions that might implicate Biden — including phrases such as “dad” or “the big guy” — in alleged criminal activities. The Federalist was the first to report the content of the letter.

This subpoena arrives amid revelations from the House Ways and Means Committee, disclosing Wolf’s directive to eliminate any references to Joe Biden from a search warrant linked to a Hunter Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) inquiry.

IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley’s testimony from May 26 unveiled startling claims, indicating that Wolf had cited “optics” as a pivotal factor in determining the execution of a search warrant against Hunter Biden.

Shapley further alleged that Wolf acknowledged substantial evidence pertaining to their investigation likely resided in the guesthouse of the former vice president but allegedly asserted, “there is no way we will get that approved.”

The subpoena comes as House Republicans fuel their impeachment inquiry into Biden over allegations of bribery, political corruption and potentially illegal influence peddling schemes.

Ex-Gov. Brown Humiliates Harris in Epic Snub: ‘I Do Not Have a Thought on That’

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Former California Governor Jerry Brown seemed uninterested in sharing his thoughts about Vice President Kamala Harris in a recent interview, contrasting starkly with his praise for President Joe Biden.

During a conversation with NBC News, Brown hailed Biden as the “man of the hour,” applauding the current president amidst ongoing scandals. However, his tone shifted notably when the conversation turned to Harris, the former California senator.

“I would say he’s the man of the hour. He’s there,” Brown said, commending Biden. “I don’t have any great political strategy here of the Democrats. It’s very challenging.”

But when probed about Harris, his demeanor shifted. “I do not have a thought on that topic,” Brown responded, according to NBC News.

This surprising reluctance to comment on a fellow Californian with a significant political history in the state left the NBC reporter taken aback. He “stiffened,” the outlet said when they asked Brown of Harris.

Brown, who spoke candidly on various global issues, remained reticent when asked about someone in the line of presidential succession who hails from his own state, the outlet reported.

During the same interview, Brown openly discussed Biden’s recent meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. While saying that Biden was “responsible” for describing Jinping as a “dictator,” Brown also criticized the media for fanning “the flames of conflict leading to war because they’re so damn stupid.”

“That is my belief of your profession,” Brown said of the media and even offered some advice to the president, who is seeking re-election in 2024.

He even offered political advice to Biden, suggesting that the Democratic president should learn how to avoid what could be deemed as “embarrassing” questions.

“When you’ve been in politics for 50 years, the first thing you’re supposed to learn is how to avoid an embarrassing question. That has to be lesson one,” he added.

Brown’s lack of commentary on Harris comes amid growing scrutiny over her abysmally low approval ratings. In recent weeks, Harris herself acknowledged the importance of earning the electorate’s trust ahead of the presidential election, a notable shift from earlier dismissive and even combative comments regarding polling.

Pete Buttigieg’s Protégée Sentenced to 30 Years for Exploiting 500+ Children

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Former College Park Mayor Patrick Wojahn, once touted as a rising political star and self-proclaimed mentee of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, has been sentenced to a staggering 30 years in jail on harrowing charges related to child pornography.

Wojahn’s fall from grace concluded in a courtroom, with his guilty plea on August 2nd, acknowledging multiple counts of child pornography and intent to distribute, marking an appalling end to a scandal that rocked the Maryland-based city of College Park.

Wojahn’s tenure as mayor abruptly ended on March 2 when law enforcement authorities took him into custody. He entered a guilty plea on an alarming list of charges, encompassing 60 counts of distributing child pornography, along with 40 counts each of possessing child pornography and intending to distribute it.

His alleged professional association with Buttigieg, surfaced in a report by the New York Post on March 3rd. In a 2019 interview with the LGBT-focused Washington Blade, Wojahn referred to Buttigieg as a “buddy” he had encountered after assuming office in 2015.

The disgraced mayor recounted Buttigieg’s involvement during meetings of mayors in Washington, highlighting their interactions during the US Conference of Mayors’ Winter Meeting in DC in January 2015.

“I actually met Mayor Pete Buttigieg shortly after I was elected mayor in 2015,” he said. “I went to the US Conference of Mayors’ Winter Meeting in DC in January [2015] and he was assigned to be my buddy.”

Wojahn’s statements attributed part of his political advancement to Buttigieg’s mentorship. “I now serve in a leadership role as vice chair of city livability and bicycling in part due to his mentorship,” Wojahn said of Buttigieg, according to the Blade. “We talked about balancing competing interests.”

During his sentencing, Wojahn was confronted with the anguish caused by his actions as victims recounted their ordeals in court. As per reports by Fox News, victims detailed experiencing severe anxiety, paranoia, disrupted sleep, and profound trust issues. Some victims were forced to relocate after being exposed as victims of sexual exploitation.

Monica Myers, the assistant state attorney in Prince George County, said that over 500 victims were in the former mayor’s phone.

“People often refer to this as a victimless crime, or they try to justify the actions of the defendant by saying he didn’t touch anyone,” Myers said, according to WTOP News. “The purpose of introducing all the statements by the victims today was to really convey behind every image he possessed is a story.”

Expressing remorse for his crimes, Wojahn addressed the court on Monday, claiming, “I know I contributed to that, and I’m deeply, deeply sorry … I recognize the damage I have caused,” he said of the victims. During his closing remarks, he addressed his husband, declaring, “I love you, too, very much.”

House Nears Decision on Biden Impeachment Articles

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) House Republicans are edging closer to the culmination of the impeachment inquiry into accusations of political corruption, bribery and illegal influence peddling, enveloping President Joe Biden.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, hinted at the impending closure in remarks to Politico on Wednesday.

“We get those depositions done this year and … then we can decide on whether or not there’s articles,”  Jordan implied, suggesting that the verdict on whether to indict the scandal-stricken president could arrive early in 2024.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., greenlit the impeachment inquiry earlier this year, effectively instructing the House Judiciary Committee, House Oversight Committee, and House Ways and Means Committee to scrutinize whether the president reaped benefits from the contentious business dealings of Hunter Biden.

Rep. Ben Cline, R-Va., emphasized the advantage for Republicans in wrapping up the impeachment before the intensification of the 2024 election season.

“We understand that the further you go toward an election, the more politicized these conversations become,” Cline declared. “That’s why it’s all the more important for us to begin to take action sooner rather than later.”

Most recently, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., issued subpoenas for Hunter and James Biden, the president’s brother, allegedly linked to a $200,000 payment to the president as a purported loan repayment.

Nonetheless, not all Republicans share the same enthusiasm for impeachment, with concerns looming about potential consequences in swing districts.

“Any kind of an impeachment puts our Biden people in a really tough spot,” expressed an anonymous Republican lawmaker to Politico. “Impeachment hurts us politically — it makes our base feel better.”

In stark contrast, Ian Sams, a White House spokesperson, dismissed the looming threat of impeachment, claiming there is no evidence that ties Biden to any wrongdoing.

“House Republicans have already spent a year on their expensive and time-consuming so-called ‘investigation,’ and they’ve turned up zero evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden,” Sams retorted.

“In fact, their own witnesses and the thousands of pages of documents they’ve obtained have repeatedly debunked their false allegations,” he added, turning a blind eye to mounting evidence collected by Republicans.

Top Adams Aide Scrubbed Texts as Biden’s DOJ Raided Homes of Staffers

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) An embattled aide to New York City Mayor Eric Adams warned staffers to scrub their phones as the FBI raided the home of the Adams campaign’s top fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, the New York Post reported on Tuesday.

Rana Abbasova, director of protocol in the Office for International Affairs, was suspended from her $80,000 post following the revelations that she led efforts to erase text messages that might have been tied to the probe.

An individual with knowledge of the probe claimed the alleged plot to delete messages was “immediately reported to investigators.” It also told the NY Post that the text messages between Abbasova and the mayor were “benign.”

The suspension of Abbasova came after the FBI ignited an investigation into the Adams campaign and potential campaign irregularities.

The mayor nor his campaign have been accused of any wrongdoing, however, a court warrant was issued to seize Adams’ cellphones to see if he had received messages from suspended Abbasova. Reportedly, FBI agents told the mayor’s security detail to step aside as they raided the phones, which they later returned.

The FBI is leading an investigation into whether the Adams campaign conspired with the Turkish government to cash in with foreign donations in exchange of political favors, the NY Post alleged.

According to the New York Times, the construction of the Turkish Consulate in New York City is at the center of the probe as it is rumored that Adams allegedly assisted in fast-tracking FDNY permits for the newly inaugurated consulate.

Specifically, the FBI is seeking knowledge into whether the campaign worked with KSK Construction to use “straw donors” to funnel illegal cash into the campaigns.

Abbasova’s home was also raided on Nov. 2, in addition to the home of Cenk Ocal. Abassoda is originally from Azerbaijan and Ocal is a former Turkish Airlines executive who worked on the transition team of the Adams administration, the NY Post reported.

Leftist Media Claims Israel Lacks ‘Evidence’ of Hamas Hospital Tunnels after Video Dump

(Eli Pacheco, Headline USA) Israel posted a video on Sunday that it said proves Hamas has dug a tunnel under the Gaza Strip’s largest hospital—but left-wing media continued to raise doubts of the video’s validity.

The footage released by the Israeli Defense Forces included shots of terrorists moving hostages through the hospital and into the apparent entrances to the tunnels.

Hamas has admitted to having hundreds of miles of access shafts, bunkers and tunnels, but it denies the secret structures are in civilian buildings, such as hospitals.

A U.S. official said Hamas has a command node under the hospital, according to intelligence.

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, though, claims the evidence isn’t conclusive.

“The counter from Israel is that Hamas has tunneled under the hospitals,” Mitchell said on air Sunday. “We have not seen that intelligence. That’s based on IDF video, IDF claims.”

The Washington Post likewise pushed back on the IDF’s claims, saying that despite the visual confirmation it had yet to provide “significant evidence” to corroborate the allegation.

Israeli military officials said they discovered the tunnel, 33 feet deep and 180 feet long. It leads to a blast-proof door, according to Newsmax.

“This type of door is used by the Hamas terrorist organization to block Israeli forces from entering the command centers and the underground assets belonging to Hamas,” said a joint military statement by the IDF and the Israeli Security Authority.

The release includes a video depicting a narrow tunnel with an arched concrete roof.

Hamas militants have accessed the tunnel through a shaft in a shed in the Shifa compound. The compound houses munitions, too, according to the release.

The video comes during Israel’s search-and-destroy mission against Hamas, as the Israeli–Hamas war reached its seventh week.

The release also showed, according to Israel, closed-circuit TV footage with a timestamp on Oct. 7—the date Hamas militants staged an attack on Israel. That video was from Al-Shifa Hospital and documented terrorists transporting hostages through the tunnel on the day of the massacre.

According to Newsmax, the hostages appearing in the video were migrants from Nepal and Thailand.

“These findings prove that the Hamas terrorist organization used the Shifa Hospital complex on the day of the massacre as terrorist infrastructure,” said a tweet from an official IDF account.

The IDF continues its search for tunnels and underground facilities, MSN reported. About 300 people are still in the hospital, it said.

A U.S. official said Hamas has a command node under the hospital, according to intelligence.

“Without getting into this specific hospital or that specific claim, this is Hamas’s track record, both historically and in this conflict,” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union.

Sanctuary Cities Embracing Red-State Strategy by Busing Illegals Elsewhere

(Headline USA) Democrat-run sanctuary cities that once claimed to welcome illegal immigrants with open arms now find themselves paying extra to ship them back out.

Denver alone has spent at least $4.3 million in taxpayer funds to relocate illegals, while adding to the numbers in other Democratic-led cities such as Chicago and New York that are struggling to house asylum-seekers, mostly from Venezuela.

As immigrants arrive in on buses from the U.S.–Mexico border city of El Paso, Texas, officials offer them two options: temporary shelter or a ticket out. Nearly half of the 27,000 who have passed through since November 2022 chose bus, plane or train tickets to other cities in the U.S., according to city data.

Denver has bought nearly 3,000 tickets to Chicago and 2,300 to New York, almost half of the more than 12,000 tickets the city has purchased for migrants since November 2022.

Meanwhile, New York and Illinois are funneling their own dwindling resources into tickets out of town, creating a shuffle of illegal immigrants in the interior U.S.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago has used state funds to help buy tickets for more than 2,500 migrants who have family, friends or sponsors elsewhere, according to Chief of Staff Mary Krinock.

Technically, those claiming “asylum” status must affirm that they have a “credible fear” that prevents them from remaining in their country of origin. However, some of the Venezuelans living in Chicago have become so tired of its substandard conditions that they are now demanding to go back home and take their chances with the Maduro regime.

Data wasn’t yet available from New York, though the city is offering one-way plane tickets to anywhere in the world.

While immigration watchdogs continue to sound the alarm over what has been dubbed the “Great Replacement”—a cynical effort by the Biden administration to import future Democrat voters who will, within a generation, secure permanent blue majorities—in the short term, it is the governors of red states like Florida and Texas who have won the battle.

The transfer of illegals has gained momentum since Govs. Ron DeSantis and Gregg Abbott started chartering buses and planes to Democrat-led cities in what critics alternately waved off as political stunts and equated, hyperbolically, with human trafficking.

More than a year later, though, some blue cities are now conceding defeat and admitting that the leftist open-border policies they helped support have been an unmitigated disaster.

And, in a show of what some might call brazen hypocrisy, they, too, are doing exactly what they once condemned.

The efforts show the increased pressures cities are facing as more illegals from around the globe are coming to the U.S. southern border, often on the promises of George Soros-funded activists that a socialists utopia awaits those willing to make the arduous trek.

Illegal border crossings topped 2 million during the government’s fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, the second-highest number on record.

Over the less than three-year span of Biden’s presidency, the estimated total falls at more than 10 million—a number greater than all but the nine largest states.

Even charity organizations—the bleeding-heart philanthropies long dedicated to enabling violations of U.S. immigration law for the sake of humanitarian compassion—have been feeling less generous of late.

“It breaks my heart. It is like we have so many children and little ones that we know we can’t even help,” said Yoli Casas, executive director of Vive Wellness, which works with new migrants to Denver.

“There’s just no more room. There’s no more funding. There’s no nothing. We’re not prepared,” she said.

Although about 1,000 of Denver’s 12,000 tickets were bound for Texas or Florida, Democrats’ self-inflicted immigration crisis has frayed the party’s typically monolithic sense of collectivist cooperation as cities and states begin throwing each other under the proverbial bus.

Tensions flared between political leaders in January when Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis chartered buses for migrants to Chicago. Then-Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and New York City Mayor Eric Adams penned a letter urging Polis to stop and saying “overburdening other cities is not the solution.”

The cities are now beginning to put up a united front—while shifting much of the blame back onto President Joe Biden.

The mayors of Denver, New York, Chicago, Houston and Los Angeles recently went to Washington to demanding that Biden redirect federal tax dollars to compensate them for the problem he created.

“You have mayors across the country that are struggling with this international crises and we need the federal government to do more,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who took office in May, told reporters this month.

Yet, others in the Windy City are looking inward at the problem, for which they have only themselves to blame. Among other things, city employees aren’t allowed to ask about immigration status, and law enforcement are barred from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.

A few Chicago City Council members now want to gauge voter support for ending its decades-old “sanctuary city” status with a nonbinding ballot measure in the March primary.

“We have other Democratic cities—Denver, California, L.A., sending their people to Chicago, New York. They’re sending their migrants to Chicago. Why? Because they are saying, ‘We can’t take anymore,’” said Alderman Anthony Beale, who has backed the ballot measure, at a recent council meeting.

“Chicago has yet to say, ‘We can’t take anymore,’” he added. “We have to draw the line somewhere.”
