Indian Gold Demand Expected to Support Extended Gold Rally

(Mike Maharrey, Money Metals News Service) According to a recent note by ANZ Bank, Indian gold demand could help extend the current gold rally and push the price of gold to $2,500 and beyond.

India ranks as the world’s number-two gold market behind China.

Gold prices have surged to record highs in both dollar and rupee terms. Indian buyers tend to be price sensitive, putting off purchases when prices climb. But the trend seems to be shifting.

Indian gold demand surged during an important festival in May. According to the World Gold Council, gold buying was brisk in both urban and rural areas.

According to ANZ analysts, that momentum appears to be carrying forward. Despite elevated prices, they project solid demand through the rest of the year.

“Higher prices are still dampening demand, but sensitivity has diminished over the past year. Despite a rise in gold’s price of more than 10 percent in 2023, consumer demand stayed buoyant at 760 tons, a marginal decline of only 2 percent y/y. The demand was also in line with the long-term (2013–22) average of 755 tons.”

Through the first five months of 2024, gold imports into India increased by 26 percent year-on-year, with 230 tons of gold flowing into the country. This is despite record-high prices.

According to ANZ analysts, economic growth and structural shifts are supporting gold demand.

“Higher capital gains and income growth have helped gold demand weather elevated prices.”

India’s gold market is primarily supported by demand for physical gold, particularly in the form of jewelry. Indian jewelry is typically made from pure 24-karat gold. It is considered an investment as much as an adornment.

ANZ analysts say rising per capita income in India’s emerging economy will be “a key driver” for the gold market in the long term.

“The country is on the cusp of economic expansion, which is expected to lift per capita income by more than 60 percent to $4,000 by 2030. There are other demographic changes like urbanization, an increasing middle-income group, and a falling rate of dependency, which can outweigh any negative impact of high gold prices.”

There are also some bullish factors in place for the short term.

The India Meteorological Department projects a good monsoon season with above-average rainfall over much of the country. This will likely result in increased crop yields, putting more money in the pockets of farmers. With gold serving as the primary asset to store wealth in rural areas of the country, this will likely boost gold demand.

According to ANZ analysts, there is also speculation that the government will lower the import duty on gold in the near future.

“India’s current account deficit of 1 percent leaves room for a change in gold’s import duty in the next Union Budget, and the industry is calling for a 5 percent cut. Should this materialize, gold imports will see a significant jump.”

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India has been on a gold-buying spree. The Indian central bank added 37 tons of gold to its reserves through the first half of the year.

The RBI has been buying gold since 2017. Over that period, the central bank increased its gold holding by over 260 tons.

An Indian economist told the Times of India that the push to accumulate gold was based on both political and economic reasons. He said that the “reliability” of the U.S. dollar has “diminished.” He noted the “noticeable decline” in the confidence in U.S. dollar assets.

Another economist told the Times, “It makes a lot of sense (to invest in gold), given the increased volatility in the FX market, elevated interest rates in the U.S., and, of course, also as the central banks in each economy would like to diversify the asset classes in which they are parking their reserves.”

India recently transported 100 tons of its gold from the UK back into India.

Indians have historically had an affinity for gold. Indian households own an estimated 25,000 tons of gold, and that likely understates the amount given the large black market in the country. Gold is deeply interwoven into the country’s marriage ceremonies and cultural rituals. Indians have long valued the yellow metal as a store of wealth, especially in poorer rural regions. Around two-thirds of India’s gold demand comes from beyond the urban centers, where large numbers of people operate outside the tax system.

Gold isn’t considered a luxury in India. Even poor Indians buy gold. According to a 2018 ICE 360 survey, one in every two households in India had purchased gold within the last five years. Overall, 87 percent of Indian households own some gold. Even households at the lowest income levels in India hold some of the yellow metal. According to the survey, more than 75 percent of families in the bottom 10 percent of income managed to buy some gold.

The yellow metal was a lifeline for Indians buffeted by the economic storm caused by the government’s response to COVID-19. After the Indian government locked down the country, banks tightened credit to mitigate the default risk. Unable to secure traditional loans, Indians used gold to secure financing. As Indians endured a second wave of lockdowns, many Indians resorted to selling gold outright to make ends meet.

Solid gold demand in India is indicative of a trend we’ve been seeing with gold flowing from the West to the East. While investment demand in Europe and North America has been tepid, investors in Asian countries have been gobbling up gold.

Along with India, gold buying in China, the world’s largest gold market, has been robust. Vietnamese and Thai investors are flocking to gold despite long lines and high prices. And gold is flying off convenience store shelves in Korea.

When Western investors hop on the bandwagon, we could see another big surge in demand, pushing prices even higher.

Secret Service Director to Testify at Public Congressional Hearing on Monday

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) House Oversight Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., has announced that Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle will sit before his committee this Monday to answer questions about her agency’s stunning security failures at Saturday’s Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“We are grateful to the brave Secret Service agents who acted quickly to protect President Trump after shots were fired and the American patriots who sought to help victims, but questions remain about how a rooftop within proximity to President Trump was left unsecure,” Comer said in a Monday press release.

“Americans demand answers from Director Kimberly Cheatle about these security lapses and how we can prevent this from happening again. We look forward to Director Cheatle’s testimony this upcoming Monday, July 22.”

Comer also requested records about the Trump rally, where 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks shot presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, killed a firefighter, and put at least two others in critical condition.

Comer seeks complete list of federal, state and local law enforcement personnel involved in protecting Trump at the Butler event. He also wants all audio and footage from the event, as well as any memorandum or notice issued by Director Cheatle to Secret Service personnel regarding the assassination attempt.

At this point, the Secret Service’s security failures seem inexplicable.

Channel 11 news in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania reported Monday that Crooks was spotted by law enforcement on a roof nearly 30 minutes before his attack.

“Channel 11′s Nicole Ford confirmed that Beaver County’s ESU team had eight members at the rally, including snipers and spotters. According to Ford’s sources, one of them noticed a suspicious man on a roof near the rally at 5:45 p.m., called it in and took a picture of the person. We have learned from our sources the person in that picture is Thomas Crooks. We’re told it’s not clear if Crooks had a gun with him at that point,” the local news station reported Monday afternoon.

“According to multiple sources, a law enforcement officer had also previously seen Crooks on the ground and called him in as a suspicious person with a picture prior to 5:45 p.m. Our sources tell us an officer checked the grounds for Crooks at that point, but did not see him where the first picture was taken,” the news station added.

“26 minutes after the second picture of Crooks was taken by law enforcement and the information called in, shots were fired from the roof of the American Glass Research building. Seconds later, a Secret Service sniper returned fire and killed Crooks.”

Biden Misgenders Secret Service Boss as House Launches Probe

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) President Joe Biden misgendered his own head of the Secret Service, claiming he has “heard from him” during an interview with NBC News’s Lester Holt. Kimberly Cheatle, the Secret Service director appointed in 2022, is a woman.

Biden’s confusing reference to Cheatle as a “him” came after Holt’s question about accountability for the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

“Is it acceptable that you have still not heard, at least publicly, from the Secret Service director?” Holt asked in a Monday interview.

In response, Biden claimed, “Oh, I’ve heard from him.”

Using the proper pronoun, Holt followed up, asking, “Have you heard from her publicly?” Biden then claimed he had met with the director in the Situation Room.

Biden’s misgendering of Cheatle comes as the Secret Service faces a newly launched sweeping investigation by the House Oversight Committee into security lapses on Saturday.

At a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump was grazed by a bullet on his right ear by Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man who was fatally shot by agents.

Crooks also fatally wounded Corey Comperatore, a Trump supporter attending the rally with his wife and daughter. When the shooting occurred, Comperatore heroically shielded them from the bullets.

In a letter to Cheatle, the House Oversight Committee demanded the turnover of documents, including the list of personnel protecting Trump on Saturday, audio and video recordings held by the agency and all communications related to the Butler rally.

The Republican-led body also asked for internal communications, including text messages and emails between the Secret Service and DHS.

The investigation adds another layer of troubles for Cheatle, who faces mounting calls for her resignation over the harrowing attack against Trump. Despite this, Cheatle remains defiant, stating she plans to stay in her position.

Don Jr. Shuts Down ‘MSDNC’ Reporter: ‘Get Out of Here’

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Donald Trump Jr. delivered a scathing rebuke to an MSNBC reporter who labeled President Donald Trump as a “divisive figure.” A fired-up Trump Jr. retorted, instructing the reporter to “get out of here.”

On Monday, at the Republican National Convention where his father became the official 2024 nominee, a reporter approached Trump Jr. and his brother, Eric Trump, with a partisan and biased question about a potential Trump White House.

“Your father as president, I think you would even say, was a devise figure. What is it going to look like in a second term?” Jacob Soboroff, a self-described reporter, asked Trump Jr., less than 48 hours after his father was nearly killed in an assassination attempt.

Trump Jr. quickly pushed back against the suggestive question, asserting that Donald Trump was not a divisive figure.

“I think the media created divineness around him. They lied about Russian, Russian, Russian collusion. They said he was a traitor. They went after him in every way possible,” Trump Jr. said.

Unhappy with the response, Soboroff asked, “Will he continue to seek policies like separating 5,000 children deliberately from their parents?”

Continuing his smackdown, Trump Jr. replied, “Did you mean the Obama administration?”

“You know they didn’t do that sir,” Soboroff falsely claimed. Even leftist-friendly outlets like CNN, NBC News and the Associated Press confirmed that the Obama administration separated children from their mothers after they crossed the border illegally.

When Soboroff reiterated his question, Trump Jr. grew impatient, swiftly retorting, “It’s M.S.D.N.C. So, I expect nothing less from you clowns. Even today, even 48 hours later, you couldn’t wait. You couldn’t wait with your lies and with your nonsense so, just get out of here.”

Soboroff, seemingly in shock, turned the camera after being lectured by Trump Jr.

Racist Attacks Target JD Vance’s Wife

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) As the nation learns more about the remarkable life of President Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, some individuals appeared shocked that Vance’s wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, is the daughter of Indian immigrants.

Chilukuri, a former attorney at the prestigious law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson, married Vance in 2014. She holds a B.A. in history from Yale University, a law degree from Yale Law School and an MPhil from Cambridge.

She has clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts and then-U.S. Judge Brett Kavanaugh, media outlets reported on Monday.

Despite these accomplishments, some Twitter users posted disturbing comments about Chilukuri’s ethnicity on Monday, shortly after Trump tapped Vance to join his 2024 presidential ticket.

Responding to a photo of Vance and Chilukuri, Randy Treibel, a music store owner, suggested that the senator’s wife exhibited “more European physiognomy” and that her “bloodline is probably a mix of early Macedonian inviasions [sic].”

One account shared a screenshot of Treibel’s claims to seemingly mock his assertions. “We are watching the creation of new forms of Race Science hitherto unknown to mankind…,” the user replied, reaching over 1.1 million views.

Another individual posted vitriolic comments about Chilukuri’s race, according to a screenshot shared by Ian Miles Cheong, a news editor.

“The vilest people on the planet oppose Trump’s nomination of JD Vance as VP. From Ukrainian NAFO scum who want to start WW3 to Neanderthal wignats upset about Vance’s Indian wife and mixed race child, only the worst people oppose him,” Cheong wrote on Twitter.

Prompting Cheong’s response was the use of a slur against Vance’s wife and one of his children, which Cheong highlighted by sharing a screengrab of the post.

The offensive comment, made by a user named Joel Davis on an unknown social media platform, included a derogatory caption. “Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance with his pajeet wife and baby,” the alleged post read.

The term “Pajeet” is an ethno-religious slur referencing Hindus, according to the Hindu American Foundation.

Notably, Davis also used a throwing up emoji in the same caption to express his offensive remarks against Vance’s wife.

Jen Psaki Complains She Is ‘Scared’ After Trump Assassination Attempt

(Headline USA) Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki complained this week that she was “scared” of what might happen to her and other so-called journalists in the leftist media after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

In an appearance on Meet the Press on Sunday, the MSNBC host attempted to deflect from the role that Democrats and their media allies had played in promoting the stochastic terrorism that led 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks to fire several rounds at Trump on Saturday, killing one Pennsylvania rally-goer and critically injuring others.

Psaki instead played the victim, demanding that Republicans adjust their upcoming convention schedule and planned speakers to “restore civility,” while claiming the Republican National Convention’s current line-up would make things worse.

“The convention is starting, and unless the programming changes, the rhetoric and how the programming is set up is not actually calming the tone or restoring civility,” Psaki claimed.

“We’ll see if that programming changes, but if it stays the same, that is escalating it,” she continued. “It is not a civil approach to a convention.”

Psaki also suggested that Trump would end up encouraging his supporters to “retaliate” on his behalf.

“For anyone out there who has a platform who thinks the moment right now is to be political and attack the other party—you are feeding into the danger,” she said.

“You are making it more likely there’s retaliation,” she continued. “I’m incredibly scared. I’m scared for journalists. I’m scared for people who have public platforms of all parties.”

Trump has issued several statements in the aftermath of the assassination attempt against him, all of which emphasized the need for unity.

“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Sunday. “I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”

Trump overwhelmingly won the nomination to be the GOP’s presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention on Monday. He will address the convention in a speech on Thursday night.

Just Days after Trump Attack, AOC Returns to Fearmongering about ‘Fascism’

(Headline USA) Just days after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump narrowly failed, “Squad” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio–Cortez, D-N.Y., reiterated that Trump’s potential return to the White House would bring “fascism” to the U.S.

Ocasio–Cortez made the comment in response to a report that many Democratic lawmakers have “resigned themselves to a second Trump presidency.”

“If you’re a ‘senior Democrat’ that feels this way, you should absolutely retire and make space for true leadership that refuses to resign themselves to fascism,” Ocasio–Cortez wrote on X. “This kind of leadership is functionally useless to the American people. Retire.”

The senior House Democrat told Axios that Trump’s victory in November is all but guaranteed after the attempted assassination.

“We’re so f***ed,” the Democrat added.

Part of the issue now is that the attempted assassination has made replacing President Joe Biden on the top of the Democratic ticket much more difficult. The “post-shooting atmosphere” is “too chaotic” for an “internal battles over leadership,” he said.

Ocasio–Cortez, however, was not one of the Democrats pushing for Biden to step aside. In fact, she offered him an unambiguous endorsement just last week.

“I have spoken to the president over the weekend. I have spoken with him extensively,” she said in a statement. “He made clear then, and he has made clear since, that he is in this race.”

When asked what she would say to her fellow Democratic lawmakers who feel they “need to see more from [Biden],” Ocasio–Cortez said, “That is all up to their own individual determination, but I’m here to make sure we win in November and that is my focus.”

Dems Admit Pulling Biden Is Now Impossible: ‘We’re So Beyond F***ed’

(Headline USA) Democrats admitted this week that the intra-party squabble over whether to replace the 81-year-old at the top of the Democratic ticket is now “over” following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

“They were having a very bad political day, and then we had this supernova event. Now, it’s frozen,” one Democratic strategist told NBC News.

“If you’re an advocate for: ‘How do we tell the old man it’s time to go?’—it’s really hard to have that conversation publicly,” the source added. “This event blocks out the sun right now.”

A steady stream of Democrat lawmakers and donors had called on Biden to drop out of the race following his disastrous debate against Trump. Biden rebuffed their demands, insisting that he remained the best candidate to beat Trump in November.

Now, Democrats will have an extremely difficult time arguing against him, one ally close to Biden told NBC.

“I think it’s over,” the ally said. “You just lose all momentum.”

With a challenge to Biden’s candidacy now insurmountable, those within the party who had hoped to push him out have now resigned themselves to a 2024 loss.

“We’re so beyond f***ed,” a senior House Democrat told Axios.

A top Democratic consultant agreed with that assessment, arguing Democrats now need to focus on mitigating the damage to down-ballot races.

“Now it’s time to focus on keeping the Senate and trying to pick up the House,” he said.

The consultant explained that the assassination attempt on Trump has neutered the Biden campaign’s entire strategy.

Biden will now have to think twice before labeling Trump a “threat to democracy,” he said.

“That message is dead,” he added. “So yeah, we’re even more f***ed with Biden. And relying on Trump to be a galvanizing, unifying enemy won’t work as well.”

MSNBC Yanks Virulently Anti-Trump ‘Morning Joe’ From Air After Assassination Attempt

(Headline USA) MSNBC pulled its flagship morning show Morning Joe from the air this week following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

The program, normally hosted by virulently anti-Trump hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, was replaced with a NBC News special report on Monday morning. A spokesperson for the network said Morning Joe would resume airing on Tuesday.

A source familiar with the network’s decision said NBC executives were worried Scarborough and Brzezinski or one of their leftist guests “might make an inappropriate comment on live television” about Trump and the assassination attempt “that could be used to assail the program and network as a whole,” according to CNN.

A spokesperson for NBC Universal denied the allegations, arguing the network’s decision was only due to its desire to continued rolling breaking news coverage.

“Given the gravity and complexity of this unfolding story, NBC News, NBC News NOW and MSNBC have remained in rolling breaking news coverage since Saturday evening,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“As we continue to cover this story into the week, the networks will continue to cross simulcast, alternating between NBC News, NBC News NOW and ‘MSNBC Reports,’ so there is one news feed covering this developing situation,” the spokesperson added.

Left-wing journalist Jeff Jarvis blasted NBC for “silencing” Scarborough and Brzezinski.

“What the f***, MSNBC? You preempted your excellent weekend programming… and now you’ve silenced [Morning Joe] in favor of your anodyne streaming news cos-play called Now?” he said.

“This is when we need the analysis and conversation these shows bring us (yes, with controversy; that is how public discourse works through it: with discussion),” he continued. “It is shocking that NBC/Comcast do not understand their own company’s programs and raison d’etre.”

Scarborough has relentlessly portrayed Trump as a “fascist” over the past few years, but tried to walk back his own heated rhetoric following the shooting at Trump’s Pennsylvania rally on Saturday.

“Our family is praying this morning for President Trump, those injured yesterday, and for the loved ones of the American tragically killed. May God grant mercy on them and deliver us from the violent political rhetoric that coursens [sic] debate and endangers public servants,” Scarborough wrote on X.

Another Trump Speech Gets Ripped to Shreds after Assassination Attempt

(Elias Irizarry, Headline USA) After the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, he tossed aside the acceptance speech he planned to deliver following his formal nomination at this week’s GOP convention and wrote a new one—this time with an emphasis on unity and reconciliation.

“I had all prepared an extremely tough speech, really good, all about the corrupt, horrible administration,” Trump told the New York Post in a private interview. “But I threw it away.”

The soon-to-be official nominee continued, saying that he wanted to try and unite the country but questioned whether such a thing was within his power.

“I don’t know if that’s possible,” he said. People are very divided.”

Trump also spoke to the Washington Examiner in New Jersey and said that his assassination attempt brought about a unique opportunity to restore unity.

“It is a chance to bring the country together,” he said. “I was given that chance.”

The interviews and the decision to rewrite his speech have led some to speculate that Trump’s near-death experience could lead him to drastically revise his entire outlook on life.

Yet, for some conservatives who are not ready to make nice—and who view the many attacks waged against Trump as attacks on democracy itself—peace without consequences may prove problematic.

Many were outraged by the disingenuous calls for civility from President Joe Biden and other Democrats who have spent years raising the temperature and promoting stochastic terrorism.
