August CPI: The Good, the Bad, and the Uh-Oh

(Mike Maharrey, Money Metals News Service) How you read the August Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is a matter of perspective. There is some good news in there for the optimist. There’s some bad news in there for the pessimist. And there’s a lot of “uh-oh” for the realist.

The CPI report was certainly good enough to keep the Federal Reserve on track for a rate cut this month. But there was just enough bad news buried in the report to crush hopes for a bigger 50 basis point cut.

The CPI Data

On an annual basis, the CPI fell to 2.5 percent, according to BLS data. That was a big decrease from 2.9 percent in July and the lowest annual CPI print since February 2021.

The significant drop in the annual number was partly a function of math. A big 0.6 percent monthly CPI increase in August 2023 fell out of the CPI calculation, pulling the 12-month average down.

On a monthly basis, prices rose by 0.2 percent, the same as in July.

Looking at the last 12 months, 0.2 percent is generally in line with the monthly CPI increase, with May and June as outliers.

When stripping out food and energy prices, the CPI report becomes much less sanguine. Core CPI rose by 0.3 percent month-on-month. On an annual basis, core CPI remains stubbornly high at 3.2 percent, well over the Fed’s mythical 2 percent target.

You should also always note that price inflation is worse than the government data suggest. The government revised the CPI formula in the 1990s so that it understates the actual rise in prices. Based on the formula used in the 1970s, CPI is closer to double the official numbers. So, if the BLS was using the old formula, we’re looking at CPI closer to 6 percent. And using an honest formula, it would probably be worse than that.

Digging Deeper into the CPI Numbers

Falling energy prices are the primary factor driving CPI lower.

The overall energy index fell by 0.8 percent month-on-month and is down by 4 percent over the last 12 months. Gasoline prices dropped by 0.6 percent in August and fuel oil prices plunged by 1.9 percent.

Falling vehicle prices have also pushed overall price levels lower. This is likely a function of the fact that tapped-out consumers can’t afford to buy a car.

Other prices continue to rise. Shelter costs spiked by 0.5 percent in August. Food prices nudged up another 0.1 percent.

We’re also seeing a lot of price pressure in services, with “services less energy services” up 0.4 percent on the month. Service inflation continues to run at 4.9 percent on an annual basis. Core services accelerated for the second straight month, jumping to 5.0 percent annualized.

Real Inflation Numbers

Price inflation is a little bit like a toddler who is supposed to be taking a nap. He’s in the crib, but he’s not asleep. He’s just waiting for somebody to come spring him loose so he can wreak more havoc on the household.

Well, don’t worry little fella. Daddy is on the way.

CPI data tells how much the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ basket of goods increased. It doesn’t tell us anything about the root cause of price inflation – monetary inflation.

Keep in mind that inflation properly defined is an increase in the supply of money and credit. This ultimately drives prices higher than they otherwise would be. The CPI doesn’t measure inflation. It measures price inflation, a symptom of monetary inflation.

Looking at the M2 money supply, it is already going up, even before the Federal Reserve cuts rates. After bottoming in November 2023 due to the Fed’s relatively aggressive tightening cycle, the money supply began creeping up again early this year.

In other words, the central bank is already inflating.

In fact, the central bank already loosened monetary policy when it quietly announced that it would begin to taper balance sheet reduction in June.

The first rate cut will be the Fed’s second move as it withdraws from the inflation fight.

Keep in mind what this pivot actually means – the Federal Reserve is ramping up the inflation machine even as it declares victory over inflation.

The Markets Were Not Pleased

Even with the less-than-ideal CPI report, analysts still expect a rate cut at the next Fed meeting. The fed funds futures market prices an 85 percent chance that the FOMC will cut rates by 25 basis points.

But stock markets still threw a fit after the CPI data came out quickly selling off on the news (although they recovered later in the day).

Why the temper tantrum?

Because investors want more than 25 basis points. They were hoping for a half-percent cut.

As Principal Asset Management chief global strategist Seema Shah told CNBC, “This isn’t the CPI report the market wanted to see. With core inflation coming in higher than expected, the Fed’s path to a 50 basis point cut has become more complicated.”

She went on to say that the CPI report wasn’t “an obstacle to policy action,” but policy hawks on the FOMC committee will likely use it “as evidence that the last mile of inflation needs to be handled with care and caution,” and a reason to default to a 25 basis point cut.

Why are the markets so desperate for a big rate cut?

As Gold Newsletter publisher Brien Lundin put it, “The markets know that far deeper cuts are needed — and soon — to keep the economy afloat.”

That’s because an economy loaded up on debt and addicted to easy money simply can’t function in a higher interest rate environment.

The Federal Reserve is walking a tightrope without a safety net. It wants to keep price inflation tame enough so you don’t notice it, but it also knows it needs to create inflation to keep the economy running.

Only time will tell how that turns out.

Secret Service in Charge of Security Plan for Jan. 6, 2025, Election Certification

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is ramping up Capitol Hill security for the 2025 Counting and Certification of Electoral Votes, which, like the previous one, falls on Jan. 6.

The Secret Service said in a Wednesday press release that Mayorkas designate the upcoming Jan. 6 as a “National Special Security Event” for the first time ever, allowing for significant resources from the federal government, as well as from state and local partners, to be utilized in a guarding the Capitol. The Secret Service will be in charge of security for that day, the press release added.

“When an event is designated a National Special Security Event, the U.S. Secret Service assumes its mandated role as the lead agency for the design and implementation of the operational security plan,” the agency said.

“National Special Security Events are events of the highest national significance,” added Eric Ranaghan, the Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Dignitary Protective Division.

Mayorkas’s move follows the Pentagon announcing on Aug. 29 that it will assist the Secret Service for the presidential and vice-presidential campaigns through Inauguration Day 2025.

While outlets such as the Washington Post painted the recent security enhancements as prudent measures to ensure a peaceful transition of power, Democrats have been openly contemplating staging an insurrection on Jan. 6, 2025, if Donald Trump wins the 2024 election. Enhanced security could feasibly guard them as they refuse to certify a Trump victory, some conservatives fear.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said earlier this year that  “it’s going to be up to us on Jan. 6, 2025, to tell the rampaging Trump mobs that he’s disqualified.” He then claimed that lawmakers who refuse to certify Trump’s Electoral College win would need “bodyguards” afterwards.

President Joe Biden also hinted in a recent interview with CBS News that Democrats plan to interfere with the transfer of power if Trump wins.

“Are you confident that there will be a peaceful transfer of power Jan. 20, 2025?” CBS correspondent Robert Costa asked.

“If Trump wins, no I’m not confident at all,” Biden answered ominously, before altering his answer: “If Trump loses, I’m not confident at all.”

Flashback: Haiti Officials Warned Locals Against Eating Cat Food After Viral Buttocks Claims

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Haitian officials and health experts urged residents not to consume cat food following unsubstantiated claims that such meals could increase the size of buttocks, Headline USA can confirm.

In a 2022 interview with the American taxpayer-funded VOA Creole, Haitian Health Minister Dr. Lauré Adrien issued a public plea against eating cat food.

“If the food is intended for cats, and you’re not a cat, it’s obvious that you shouldn’t eat it,” Adrien said in Haitian Creole. “No matter how good or beneficial cat food may seem for you, I’m sure you’re sensible enough not to eat cat food.”

Headline USA translated and verified the English versions of Adrien’s remarks, which were widely reported in 2022. Watch the Creole-language video below:

“This is an example of a social phenomenon that can have an impact on people’s behavior,” Adrien added, responding to the viral claims. He later added, “People should take a moment to think more deeply and not just follow what others say.”

Similarly, Pierre Hugues Saint Jean, president of the Pharmacist Association in Haiti, warned about the health consequences in remarks reported by The Haitian Times, a New York-based news outlet focusing on Haitian news.

“People should not be eating cat food,” Saint Jean said in June 2022, sounding the alarm about the controversy. “This is an issue of lack of education.”

He added, “The consumption of cat kibble can make you fat, because it is rich in proteins and amino acids. You won’t die from it, but it can have harmful consequences on your health.”

The Haitian Times acknowledged it could not independently verify the viral rumors, which gained widespread recognition on WhatsApp. However, it noted that the sale of cat food had increased in street markets.

“People should not eat this because the human body is not made to adapt to those substances,” warned general practitioner Dr. Dietrich Jean-Paul.

While neither VOA nor The Haitian Times reported that the consumption of cat food included eating actual cat meat, these news reports re-emerge as Democrats and the legacy media launch a coordinated counterattack on claims that some Haitian nationals might be responsible for allegedly missing pets in Springfield, Ohio.

Although law enforcement officials claim they have no reports of stolen pets, some residents have called non-emergency lines to report alleged Haitian nationals snatching geese at a local park.

A Springfield resident raised concerns about potentially missing pets during a public hearing. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost launched an investigation to explore ways to block the Biden-Harris administration from transporting illegal aliens into local communities in Ohio.

In the Dominican Republic, Haiti’s neighboring country, several residents have accused Haitian nationals of snatching cats for consumption.

In one video reported by the Dominican news channel Noticias SIN in January 2024, a Dominican man confronted what appears to be a Haitian about potentially missing cats.

The Haitian man is heard admitting in Spanish that he killed the cat with a “palo,” or “wooden stick” in English. A second video showed the man trying to cook what appeared to be a dead cat.

Former Dominican presidential candidate and former president of the Chamber of Deputies Abel Martínez claimed that Haitians eat “cats” and “snakes” to save money. Martínez’s role was akin to that of the Speaker of the House.

The left countered by affirming that the Ohio claims are merely founded in racism against people of Haitian descent.

Court Order Could Help GOP Flip Alaska Seat Sarah Palin Lost

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Remember when ranked-choice voting helped Democrats take a congressional seat in Alaska that Republicans had held for 50 years?  That could soon change, according to analysis by the Daily Caller.

On Tuesday, a state judge ruled that Democratic candidate Eric Hafner, who is imprisoned in New York, can appear on the November ballot. This is despite the fact he has never lived in Alaska and is currently serving a 20-year sentence.

The Alaska Democratic Party sued to block Hafner from appearing on the general election ballot, arguing his sentence disqualified him from holding public office. Anchorage Superior Court Judge Ian Wheeles dismissed the case, keeping Hafner on the ballot.

As reported by the Daily Caller, Hafner could act as a spoiler candidate for incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola. She won the seat thanks to ranked-choice voting in a special election in 2022 against Republican candidates Sarah Palin and Nick Begich.

Begich is running again against Peltola in a close race for the seat previously held by Republicans.

“The situation that has unfolded is a direct result of ranked choice voting which Nick Begich has consistently spoken out against,” Begich’s adviser Bernadette Wilson said.

“Fortunately, Alaskans will have the opportunity to undo this convoluted system in November. In the meantime, we look forward to having a robust discussion on the failed policies of the Biden administration which Mary Peltola has unequivocally supported as congresswoman,” Wilson added.

The late Rep. Don Young held the seat from 1972 until his death on March 18, 2022. The 2022 special election exposed the controversy around ranked-choice voting.

Peltola received 74,817 votes in that election, while Palin got 58,339 and Begich 52,536. This result showed Republicans with 58.77 percent of the total vote, compared to Democrats’ 39.66 percent.

A similar trend was observed in the November election for a full term, with Republicans securing 49.44 percent of the votes to Peltola’s 48.66 percent.

Trump Supporters Claim Kamala Harris Used Headphone-Earring During Debate

(Dmytro “Henry” Aleksandrov, Headline USA) Conservatives and Trump supporters recently claimed that Kamala Harris used a secret earpiece disguised as earrings during the Sept. 10, 2024, presidential debate.

The Daily Mail reported that critics alleged that the gold pearl loops are a pair of smart audio earrings engineered by German start-up company NOVA. However, the news source claimed that Harris wore Tiffany’s earrings, adding that the only similarity is that they both feature a pearl.

“There’s a major issue with this debate. I told myself she was fed what to say during the debate, and my hunch was right. Nova is the world’s first and only wireless earphone earrings. Nothing is what it seems,” @Maveapproach wrote.

The person behind the account then shared a photo of Harris during the debate, displaying her earrings. He also shared a link to the NOVA H1 Audio Earrings, allegedly the “first clip-on earphones on the planet.”

On its Kickstarter page, the earpiece’s creators claimed that the earrings placed on the earlobes can “project sound from inside the pearl straight into your ear canal.”

“Two tiny high-end microphones are integrated into each Earring, providing the user with crystal clear phone calls and wind-noise cancelation. These earrings are fully packed with the latest technology embedded in real pearls to provide you with music, phone calls and digital assistants all day long,” the creators said.

The news source claimed that, aside from the earring, which retails for around $625 and is available in gold, there are no other similarities with the earrings that Harris wore on the debate night. The NOVA earrings appear almost half-moon-shaped, while Harris’s earrings had a double gold loop under the gemstone.

Harris’s supporters, who are usually ready to sacrifice the truth on the woke altar to push the far-left agenda, took a rare opportunity to point out that Harris’s earrings are nearly identical to a pair of Tiffany’s earrings that retailed for over $2,000.

The fact that the earrings turned out to be just earrings, however, also doesn’t help the leftists’ narrative since it still shows that Harris, a taxpayer-funded politician, wears $2,000 earrings while regular Americans are struggling with feeding their families because of the Biden-Harris economy.

Biden Puts on MAGA Hat Just a Day After Trump’s Debate Jab

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) A group of MAGA supporters playfully coaxed President Joe Biden into wearing a “Trump 2024” hat during his visit to a Pennsylvania fire department, a now-viral video revealed.

Video footage of the visit showed Biden at the fire station on the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks when he encountered a volunteer wearing the iconic red pro-Trump hat.

The exchange occurred as Biden autographed a White House hat for the Trump supporter, and then asked him to switch hats.

“Can I see that?” Biden asked, gesturing toward the Trump hat as he stood beside the volunteer, who proudly wore the pro-Trump cap.

“Want my autograph?” the man asked Biden in jest.

“Hell no,” Biden replied as he grabbed the Trump hat and handed the man his White House hat, exchanging caps.

The crowd encouraged Biden to play along and put the hat on, with two individuals shouting, “Put it on!” “Put it on!”

“I ain’t going that far!” Biden first responded, rejecting the pleas.

When someone in the crowd asked him to wear the hat “for a selfie,” Biden caved, placing the Trump hat on his head.

The crowd erupted in applause and cheers, with the hat owner joking, “I’m proud of you now, you old fart!”

Photos and videos of the funny exchange gained viral popularity on social media, particularly because the interaction came just hours after Trump joked that he’d send Vice President Kamala Harris a “MAGA” hat for copying some of his signature policies.

“Everything that she believed three years ago and four years ago is out of the window,” Trump said Tuesday during ABC News’s presidential debate. “She’s going to my philosophy now. In fact, I was going to send her a MAGA hat.”

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates claimed the president wore the Trump hat to emphasize the need for unity similar to post-Sept. 11, 2001.

“As a gesture, he gave a hat to a Trump supporter who then said that in the same spirit, POTUS should put on his Trump cap. He briefly wore it,” Bates stated.

Woke Dad Wishes 11-Yr-Old Son Were Killed by White Man Instead of Haitian

(Dmytro “Henry” Aleksandrov, Headline USA) On Sept. 10, 2024, a leftist father of Aiden Clark, Nathan, told people who attended a city commission meeting in Springfield, Ohio, that he wished his son had been killed by a 60-year-old white man instead of a Haitian.

According to Nathan, the reason why he would prefer that was because he doesn’t want Republicans to point out the truth that illegal aliens commit many crimes, including murdering innocent Americans, like Aiden.

Blaze Media reported that the murder of Aiden that happened last year resulted in people all over the United States listening to the concerns of residents about road safety with Haitian drivers, who often don’t even have driver’s licenses.

The news source added that Aiden died after a Haitian driver hit his school bus.

“You know, I wish that my son, Aiden Clark, was killed by a 60-year-old white man. And I bet you never thought anyone would ever say something so blunt. But if that guy killed my 11-year-old son, the incessant group of hate-spewing people would leave us alone,” he said.

Nathan, who is more concerned about being an “ally” to illegals rather than a good father, also said that he disapproves of his son being used as a “political tool” by Republicans, saying that it is “reprehensible.”

The leftist criticized U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, Donald Trump, and Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio.

“This needs to stop now. They can vomit all the hate they want about illegal immigrants, the border crisis, and even untrue claims about fluffy pets being ravaged and eaten by community members. However, they are not allowed, nor have they been allowed to mention Aiden Clark from Springfield, Ohio,” Nathan said.

Not surprisingly, Nathan then figuratively spit on his son’s grave by daring to say that he was “not murdered” but rather “accidentally killed by an immigrant from Haiti.”

“There are things that can be prevented. That guy should not have been in the country. He shouldn’t have been driving. He was working for a company, local, that was actually supplied to them,” Mark Sanders, whose daughter witnessed the crash that killed Aiden, said.

Gavin Newsom Jabs Kamala Harris: ‘She’s Not the Underdog’

(Headline USA) California Gov. Gavin Newsom threw Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris under the bus this week, saying he did not believe the incumbent vice president was this race’s “underdog” despite her campaign’s attempts to portray her that way.

Newsom made the comment during an interview with CBS News on Tuesday ahead of the debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump.

“I don’t know what it is about Democrats—there’s a timidity,” Newsom said.

“The stock market hits record-breaking, but we are like ‘Well, not everyone’s in the stock market,’” he continued. “How about some pride? How about standing tall for your accomplishments?”

Newsom also threw a jab at Harris’s refusal to sit down with the press on a regular basis.

“That’s up to the campaign. I’m not here to advise in that respect. I think absolutely she should do that, but that’s up to her,” he remarked.

Harris has yet to do a solo sit-down interview with the media since launching her presidential campaign this summer. She also has not held a formal press conference.

Newsom rose up the ranks with Harris as mayor of San Francisco and California lieutenant governor when she was, respectively, the city’s district attorney and state attorney general. But despite their parallel career tracks and shared political values, they are not believed to have been especially close.

Newsom also was understood to have been waiting in the wings for President Joe Biden to exit the 2024 race, and was even accused of running a shadow campaign. However, Biden’s endorsement of Harris thwarted any hope he had of entering the race.

Although he agreed to stay on as a campaign surrogate for Harris, he has been far less active on the campaign trail since the switch.

It could be that Newsom is choosing to distance himself from Harris, especially if he expects her to lose against Trump in November, so that he can launch his own bid in 2028. Or, Harris could be preemptively sidelining Newsom for fear of his presidential ambitions.

After all, Harris reportedly passed over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro for her vice presidential pick because she worried that Shapiro would want to run for the White House himself in 2028.

When asked this summer about his diminished role in the Harris campaign, Newsom said, “At the end of the day it will be swing states that will be determinative, and if I can fill a void that others can’t, then I’ll be there,” he said.

Trump Invites Prominent 9/11 ‘Truther’ Laura Loomer to Ceremony w/ Biden, Harris

(Headline USA) Laura Loomer, a right-wing activist and investigative journalist who alleged last year that 9/11 was an “inside job,” joined Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in New York and Pennsylvania on Wednesday as he commemorated the anniversary of the attacks.

The 31-year-old provocateur and influencer posted photos from ground zero and shared a video of Trump talking with firefighters in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday morning.

“They were thrilled to see him,” she wrote.

She also accompanied the former president to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where one of the planes crashed 23 years ago after crew members and passengers fought back against the hijackers.

“HAPPENING NOW: President Trump just visited the Shanksville Fire Department after visiting the memorial site of United Flight 93 and meeting with family members of 9/11 terrorist attack victims in Shanksville, Pennsylvania,” she posted on X on Wednesday afternoon. “NEVER FORGET!”

Loomer said in a text message to the Associated Press that she doesn’t work for the Trump campaign and that she was “invited as a guest.”

She did not respond to questions about her past statements about 9/11.

The Trump campaign responded with a statement from an unnamed campaign official: “Today, President Trump put politics aside and stood beside Kamala Harris and Joe Biden to honor those who lost their lives during the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history,” it read. “The day wasn’t about anyone other than the souls who are no longer with us, their families, and the heroes who courageously stepped up to save their fellow Americans on that fateful day.”

Loomer was also spotted departing Trump’s plane when he landed in Philadelphia for Tuesday’s debate.

Last year, Loomer shared a video on X that said “9/11 was an Inside Job!” and claimed it was somehow related to then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s announcing $2.3 trillion in “lost” government funds on Sept. 10, 2001.

Rumsfeld’s remarks ostensibly were about a challenge in tracking funds due to outdated technology. The day before 9/11 was not the first time the problem had been discussed.

The belief that U.S. officials are hiding information about the Sept. 11 attacks or were somehow involved in the planning has taken hold among a segment of determined skeptics, sometimes referred to—either pejoratively or endearingly—as “truthers.”

Loomer’s stepped-up presence in Trump’s entourage comes as he has made a number of staff changes in recent weeks, including bringing back veterans of his 2016 and 2020 campaigns, like former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. Lewandowski was known for the mantra “Let Trump be Trump.”

She has long served as one of Trump’s fiercest supporters in the Make America Great Again wing of the Republican Party.

She led attacks against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Trump’s behalf during the primary phase of the 2024 campaign and has been deeply involved in pro-Trump politics—and the more extreme elements it has attracted—for years.

Some Trump allies would prefer the former president to distance himself from Loomer, but Trump has welcomed her as a semi-regular presence in recent months.

When she ran as a Republican for Congress in Florida in 2020, Loomer celebrated her primary win at a party attended by controversial figures including Gavin McInnes, the founder of the far-right Proud Boys.

She later lost the 2020 House race to Democrat Lois Frankel. She also ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2022.

Trump Suggests Pulling ABC’s License After ‘Rigged’ Debate

(Headline USA) Former President Donald Trump slammed ABC News after Tuesday night’s debate, suggesting the network’s license should be pulled because of its bias against him.

“ABC took a big hit last night,” Trump told Fox News on Wednesday.

“I mean, to be honest, they’re a news organization. They have to be licensed to do it,” he added, referring to the Federal Communication Commission’s licensing for local broadcast stations.

“They ought to take away their license for the way they did that,” he argued.

Echoing many critics on the Right, Trump argued his debate against Vice President Kamala Harris was actually a “three on one” debate, with the moderators asking deliberately biased questions and repeatedly fact-checking him while failing to fact-check Harris.

“It was a rigged deal as I assumed it would be,” Trump said. “When you look at the fact that they were correcting everything and not correcting with her … The press is so dishonest in this country. It’s amazing.”

Co-moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis “fact-checked” Trump six times throughout the debate, sometimes falsely, as Davis did when she claimed there were “zero” states that allowed late-term abortions.

Harris, on the other hand, was not fact-checked once, despite repeating the widely debunked “very fine people” hoax.

Even the left-leaning fact-check website Snopes has acknowledged that Trump never called white supremacists “very fine people” in the wake of the 2017 Charlottesville riot.

“In a news conference after the rally protesting the planned removal of a Confederate statue, Trump did say there were ‘very fine people on both sides,’ referring to the protesters and the counterprotesters. He said in the same statement he wasn’t talking about neo-Nazis and white nationalists, who he said should be ‘condemned totally,'” Snopes wrote.

Muir and Davis, however, did not point this out or correct Harris.

Harris also brazenly lied by claiming she was present in the U.S. Capitol when Trump supporters breached the building on Jan. 6, 2021. Although she was there in the morning, she had left to go to the nearby Democratic National Committee headquarters before rallygoers arrived on the scene.

“I think they lost a lot of credibility,” Trump said. “I think it was one of my better debates. Maybe my best debate, I think.”
