Trump Calls for McConnell to Step Down as Senate GOP Leader

'We have to have that... '

(Mark Pellin, Headline USA) Less than 48 hours after declaring that he would back primary challenges of any House Republican who didn’t support impeaching Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump called for Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to step down from his position as Senate minority leader.

“We have to have that,” Trump said when asked by Breitbart News if Senate Republicans need a new leader. “No, we have to have that.”

Trump’s comments followed a McConnell health scare last week, when the lawmaker appeared to suffer a stroke during a press conference, and on the heels of previous McConnell health issues.

In tandem with concerns about McConnell’s physical and cognitive abilities, Trump also ripped the direction of Senate Republicans under McConnell’s leadership.

“I thought it was sad,” Trump said about McConnell’s recent health scare. “At the same time, I think it’s a shame he went so far out to give Green New Deal money to Biden and Democrats.”

McConnell has drawn widespread criticism for enabling the Biden administration to wildly inflate federal spending to advance its radical agendas, without serious GOP Senate opposition.

“He got 10 people to vote because they needed 10 people, and he got 10 people to vote on numerous occasions for trillions of dollars. I think that’s a shame. But that was too bad,” Trump said of the minority leader’s role in passing the Biden spending plan.

Notable Senate Republicans have balked at addressing McConnell’s health issues and whether it’s time to consider a new minority leader.

“I think that that’s speculation that’s not necessary right now,” waffled Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., while Sen. Minority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., sidestepped the issue.

“That was a sad thing to see. He had a bad fall, I guess, and probably an after-effect of that,” Trump said of McConnell during the Breitbart interview.

“But it was also sad that he gave trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars to the Democrats to waste on the Green New Deal, destroying our oceans and destroying our great, beautiful vistas and plains all over our country with windmills that are very expensive energy,” Trump said. “So that’s a very sad thing also.”
