(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson spoke more than any other Supreme Court justice this term by a wide margin, with the new justice blabbering away throughout her first term on the high court’s bench.
Jackson spoke over 78,800 words in her first term, setting her apart as an excessive talker, especially for a freshman justice, the Washington Times reported.
Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan rounded out the top three, meaning that left-wing women talk more during the high court’s oral arguments than any other group. According to a Supreme Court scholar Adam Feldman, the high court’s leftists probably just cannot resist expressing their views at great length.
“There is the liberal justices argument … where they pretty much know they will be on the losing side of any ideologically-laden case, so at least they can air out their positions at oral argument,” Feldman said.
Speaking at length in oral arguments can also help one derail arguments, prevent other justices from asking questions or debunk the points of other justices.
Ilya Shapiro, senior fellow and director of constitutional studies at the Manhattan Institute, noted his surprise at the first-term justice’s outspoken approach.
“It’s surprising for a rookie justice to speak a lot, let alone more than anyone else,” Shaprio said.
“Justice Jackson clearly came out of the gate loaded for bear, to mix metaphors,” he continued, noting that she at least knows the ins-and-outs of each case. “She speechifies at times, but it’s clear that she’s done the work to ask about the minutiae of various cases.”
Josh Blackman, a professor at South Texas College of Law, said that Jackson may figure out how to talk less in due time.
“Maybe Jackson will also sort of find her place among the other justices with respect to timing,” he said. “There might be value in spreading that time around.”
Aside from her excessive talking, Jackson has also revealed astounding incompetence at times, trashing conservative justices at every opportunity.
