Ukraine Crisis Shines Light on Importance of 2nd Amendment

'It is not just about self-protection but the protection of freedom and independence. We Ukrainians really show this meaning of the Second Amendment... '

(Mark Pellin, Headline USA) An unexpected effect from Russian’s invasion of Ukraine has been to showcase the importance of a strong 2nd Amendment serving one of its primary functions.

As the crisis unfolded and the sweeping extent of Russia President Vladimir Putin’s aggression became dire, the Ukrainian parliament passed “Law #5708 on the Right to Civilian Firearms,” reported Zero Hedge.

“A spokesperson for the Ukrainian government was very clear about the purpose, saying: “This bill is to ensure that every citizen receives the sacred right to self-defense.”

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, from the besieged capitol city Kyiv, called on citizens to join the fight and said weapons would be provided to that end, according to Business Insider.

“All those who are ready to take up arms, join the ranks of the area defense forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the country’s Armed Forces tweeted. “We simplified procedures. Only your ID is needed. We give weapons to all patriots!”

The leftist media sponsoring the Biden administration has done its best to ignore the importance of the Ukrainian gun rights movement, because “to acknowledge the importance of an armed citizenry would be to recognize that the anti-gun movement is built on lies,” reasoned Zero Hedge.

“The same people that have told American gun owners that their AR15s would be ‘useless’ against a government armed with nuclear weapons and F-15 Jets would have to explain why ACTUAL ‘weapons of war’ (not semi-automatic sporting rifles like the AR15) are being given out to citizens to fight off a tyrannical invader.”

Ironically, the call to arms — that has resulted in citizens being provided more than 25,000 automatic rifles, 10 million bullets, and an unknown number of RPGs — is being heralded as a positive development even by leftist Democrats who want to scrap 2nd Amendment rights for Americans.

The notion of an armed citizenry has its root firmly planted in Americans’ rights to bear arms, according to a NY Post’s recount from one of the hundreds of Ukrainian citizens taking the fight to Putin.

“We always look at the Second Amendment of the US Constitution,” a Ukrainian lawyer said.

“It is not just about self-protection but the protection of freedom and independence. We Ukrainians really show this meaning of the Second Amendment.”

That message has resonated with the American public, even if left ignored by the mainstream media.
