(Ezekiel Loseke, Headline USA) The leftist media has excitedly reported a new Pew study that projects the loss of America’s Christian majority, and thus the loss of the historical religion of the American people, by 2070.
The new Pew study projects that America will cease to be a majority Christian country by 2070. The report explained that Americans have been leaving the faith of their fathers rapidly since the 1990s. Pew gleefully noted that “This accelerating trend is reshaping the U.S. religious landscape.”
America has always been a majority Christian nation. Political Scientist Willmoore Kendall, in his classic book The Basic Symbols of the American Political Tradition, pointed out that the first political document of America, The Mayflower Compact, was a Christian covenant. Kendall noted that “The first words of the first political document ever composed on this hemisphere [were] “In the name of God, Amen.”
Thomas West, in his acclaimed book on America, The Political Theory of The American Founding, described America’s Christian values as an essential part of the American regime. Even NPR noted that “Christianity remains the majority religion in the United States, as it has been since the country’s founding.”
Pew’s study demonstrated the legacy of this trend. Pew found over 90% of the population identified themselves as Christian in 1972. Unlike in previous years, in 2022, only 64% of all Americans are Christian today, according to Pew.
Axios gleefully began its article by noting that “Christians could fall below 50% of the U.S. population by 2070.”
NPR began its story about the poll with a long section describing a homosexual leaving her church. When NPR finally addressed the relevant story, it wrote, “Christianity remains the majority religion in the United States, as it has been since the country’s founding, but it’s on the decline.”
NPR closed its article with another long personal interest section. This time, focusing on a Stanford student who left his faith. NPR quoted the now faithless man commenting on the study, “I don’t think it’s surprising. I think it’s a product of modern comforts. I think when life is good, when it’s better, you know, religion is just not as important.”
Yahoo! News happily reported that Christianity is not being replaced by another religion but rather by religious “nones.” Nones are those who identify with no religion. They may be atheists, agnostics, or some variation thereof.
Pew itself seemed happy to embrace the secularization narrative. It admitted that its projections “are not the only possibilities,” and that a Christian revival is possible. Despite this recognized possibility, as noted by Yahoo! News, “These factors, however, were not included in the study.”
