Ted Cruz Dunks on NBA Coach Popovich for Anti-Gun Rant

'That's just weird. And it's stupid. And it's counterfactual... '

(Robert Jonathan, Headline USAIn a virtue-signaling rant, National Basketball Association head coach and would-be woke activist Gregg Popovich claimed that the Second Amendment is a myth.

Apparently reacting to the horrific Nashville school shooting, the San Antonio Spurs skipper criticized several prominent GOP politicians for not going along with the gun control agenda.

Pop, as he is nicknamed, seemed particularly displeased with his home state senator, Republican Ted Cruz, who has proposed legislation to substantially increase police protection at schools.

In characterizing the coach as a longtime partisan liberal Democrat, Cruz responded to Pop’s “condescending” 2A-mythology that he deemed a “fairly astonishing proposition” on the Verdict podcast.

During a presser, Popovich — who is a big fan of former NFL washout QB Colin Kaepernick — declared, in part about Republican lawmakers, “But they’re going to cloak all this stuff [in] the myth of the Second Amendment, the freedom. You know, it’s just a myth. It’s a joke. It’s just a game they play. I mean, that’s freedom.

“Is it freedom for kids to go to school and try to socialize and try to learn and be scared to death that they might die that day? But Ted Cruz will fix it, because he’s gonna double the number of cops in the schools. That’s what he wants to do. Well, that will create a great environment. Is that freedom?,” he added.

Since the sports media is just as, if not more, liberal that the general media, no one in the room challenged Popovich’s flawed constitutional scholarship or asked him why he opposes creating a safe environment for kids.

The multi-millionaire coach, 74, still seems triggered by a tweet sent during the 2021 Christmas season by U.S. Rep. Tom Massie, R-Ky.

“Is that cool?,” an outraged, humorless Popovich asked out loud, without mentioning Massie by name.

During the podcast segment. Sen. Cruz referenced, among other things, the security measures in place at Popovich’s work station at the AT&T Center arena, which makes the coach’s hostility toward gun rights as enshrined in America’s founding document all the more hypocritical.

“You know what there are a lot of at NBA games? Police officers, armed police officers with weapons strapped in their holsters. You know, Popovich is surrounded by armed security most of the time. And this is true with so many Hollywood liberals that have armed bodyguards protecting them, and they say, ‘You little people, you don’t have a right to defend your family. You don’t have a right to defend your children…'”

Cruz added that Popovich would be “horrified” if law enforcement abandoned his neighborhood. “I want officers to keep my family safe. I want officers to keep his family safe.”

In this context, Cruz said that “there’s a political talking point now that if you want to keep our kids safe, clearly police officers are not going to do anything to help. That’s just weird. And it’s stupid. And it’s counterfactual.”

With the left-wing focus on confiscating guns rather than prosecuting gun felons, the senator also theorized that Popovich would never condemn “George Soros DAs that are releasing murderers…Instead, they put the blame on you for exercising your right to keep and bear arms to protect your family and your children.”

In a column for The Blaze, former ESPN and FS1 analyst/host Jason Whitlock similarly wondered “Why does Popovich believe he’s smarter than the founding fathers? Why are basketball players worthy of more armed security than schoolchildren?”

Whitlock also claimed that the armed bodyguards accompany the Spurs on road trips.

“Gregg Popovich is a typical leftist…He wants the government to take your guns because he’s made enough money to pay men to carry his,” Whitlock concluded about the coach’s anti-gun “Popaganda.”
