House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Ca., said in a letter to Congressional Democrats that she has asked Vice President Mike Pence to respond within 24 hours to a request that he invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office, Todd Starnes reported.
If Pence does not act against Trump, then Pelosi said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., will introduce Rep. Jamie Raskin’s, D-Md., legislation, which would invoke a section of the 25th Amendment by which a standing body would determine the president’s fitness for office.
Raskin’s legislation also calls on Pence to depose Trump.
“This resolution calls on the Vice President to convene and mobilize the Cabinet to activate the 25th Amendment to declare the President incapable of executing the duties of his office, after which the Vice President would immediately exercise powers as acting President,” Pelosi wrote.
If the body which Raskin’s bill creates were to determine in agreement with Pence that Trump does not have the mental capacity to act as President of the United States, then the president would be removed and the vice president would elevate to the presidency.
The body would be a permanent fixture composed of former politicians and bureaucrats as well as psychiatrists and physicians to monitor the president’s fitness at all times, The Baltimore Sun reported.
The bill gives Congress the authority to appoint the members to serve on the body, so it would be full of administrative state agents and sympathizers.
Pelosi said Raskin’s legislation will more forward for a vote on Monday or Tuesday.
“If we do not receive Unanimous Consent, this legislation is planned to be brought up on the Floor the following day,” Pelosi wrote. “We are calling on the Vice President to respond within 24 hours.”
After this legislation, Pelosi will introduce new articles of impeachment.
