Rogue Civil Rights Commission Refuses to Recognize Trump Appointees

(Ben Sellers, Headline USA) A federal agency that is supposed to be bipartisan appears to have gone rogue and declared itself outside the law, refusing to recognize changes to its leadership made by President Donald Trump.

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights includes eight members, four of whom are appointed by the president, two by the president pro tempore of the Senate, and two by the speaker of the House.

Another stipulation of the 1957 law that established the commission is that no more than four members can belong to the same political party. It also states that the president designates the chairperson and vice chairperson, but that it must be done in concurrence with a majority of the commissioners.

Former chairwoman Rochelle Garza and vice chairwoman Victoria Nourse, both Democrat appointees of the Biden administration, have refused, however, to recognizes Trump’s appointments, insisting that the full commission must agree while forestalling any opportunity for a vote.

Even though Trump de-designated Garza as chair in one of his first acts upon returning office, she has openly flouted his authority as duly elected president, while attempting to install radical ideologues on the commission’s administrative staff who would create additional hurdles to Trump’s civil rights agenda, the Daily Signal reported.

 

Ironically, Garza has declared herself the last bastion of civil rights while blocking the procedures that would allow others to assume the position.

After Trump announced his intended replacements — elevating commissioner Peter Kirsanow to the chair, Stephen Gilchrist to vice chair and appointing Kirsanow’s assistant, Carissa Mulder, as staff director — Garza canceled the meeting at which the commission was supposed to vote on the changes.

At a recent meeting, Gilchrist and fellow commissioner J. Christian Adams sought to hand-deliver a presidential proclamation from the White House, eliminating all doubt as to what the president’s intentions were. But the Democrat members questioned the authenticity of the document and quickly went into recess, leaving the committee without a quorum to continue.

“This is a case of Garza simply ignoring the president’s designation of staff director and not allowing a vote,” Adams said in an email to Bloomberg Law. “I have asked her repeatedly to put it on the agenda before meetings.”

Although the commission functions only in an advisory capacity, its work is particularly relevant to efforts by the Trump administration to close election loopholes through measures like the SAVE Act and a repeal of birthright citizenship.

Its reports have the ability to influence congressional oversight hearings and appropriations, as well as to influence policies of other federal agencies under the executive wing.

Moreover, the usurpation of Trump’s authority plays into an ongoing problem of deep-state bureaucrats supplanting the will of voters with their own judgment.

Disloyal staffers contributed to regulatory chaos and leaks during Trump’s first administration, paving the way to corrupt, Democrat-led investigations like the Russia-gate hoax and Ukraine impeachment attempt that largely derailed his agenda.

Among the Democrat-appointed commissioners to the USCCR is former Rep. Mondaire Jones, D-N.Y., a former “Squad” member who is known for his radical views and bombastic rhetoric.

While Trump does have statutory authority to change the leadership of the commission, he only has the ability to fire its members for cause due to inefficiency, neglect of duty or malfeasance in office.

The Supreme Court currently has under its consideration a separate cases related to Trump’s effort to fire Federal Trade Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter and Federal Reserve board member Lisa Cook.

He fired Cook after she refused to resign under serious investigation of mortgage fraud. However, her radical views also were at odds with Trump’s view that the Fed should cut interest rates to help stimulate the economy — a move it had resisted doing even as the inflation of the Biden administration fell back within accepted levels.

The Justice Department recently dropped a criminal investigation into Fed chair Jerome Powell, another NeverTrumpist, amid questions over whether he mismanaged funds related to the construction of a new Federal Reserve building.

Study Confirms that Salmon Swim 2X Longer after Using Cocaine

(Ben Sellers, Headline USA) Foodies have long touted the virtues of smoking salmon to draw out its distinctive flavor, but a group of international scientists may be onto an even bigger game-changer: feeding the fish cocaine.

A study published in the 4/20 edition of the journal Current Biology revealed that juvenile salmon injected with the stimulant swam nearly twice as far in a week as those who kept their proverbial noses clean.

The purpose of the study, ostensibly, was to determine the impacts of global drug pollution as the Trump administration continues to blow up the boats of suspected narcotics smugglers coming from South America.

“Cocaine and its metabolites are increasingly being detected in aquatic environments worldwide,” said the study, led by researchers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in conjunction with a litany of partner institutions in Europe and Australia.

The experiment involved 105 wild Atlantic salmon who were placed in Sweden’s Lake Vattern. Their movements were then tracked after exposure to both cocaine and its leading byproduct, benzoylecgonine, which is created in the liver through the metabolism of cocaine.

The researchers concluded that the presence of cocaine may “disrupt the movement and space use of these fish in the wild” and warned that additional research may be needed to understand the “long-term effects on fish reproduction and survival.”

However, they downplayed any weirdness about the need to watch fish take drugs and have sex, insisting it was a totally normal phenomenon.

“The idea of cocaine affecting fish might seem surprising, but the reality is that wildlife is already being exposed to a wide range of human-derived drugs every day,” wrote co-author Marcus Michelangeli from Griffith University’s Australian Rivers Institute. “The unusual part is not the experiment, it’s what’s already happening in our waterways.”

The human implications of the study were not entirely clear, although Michelangeli hinted that drug pollution may manifest in all of the food that is consumed by and from certain regions.

“Where fish go determines what they eat, what eats them, and how populations are structured,” he said. “If pollution is changing these patterns, it has the potential to affect ecosystems in ways we are only beginning to understand.”

The researchers further noted that the findings were not limited simply to salmon.

“For example, muscle samples collected from wild Brazilian sharpnose sharks (Rhizoprionodon lalandii) contained a maximum of 107.5 ng g−1 of cocaine and 18.7 ng g−1 of benzoylecgonine,” they wrote.

In short, the study may ultimately forebode another nightmarish example of life imitating art.

Report: Alleged Trump Attacker Wasn’t on FBI’s Radar

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) The man who allegedly attacked the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday apparently wasn’t on the FBI’s radar—at least not until the last minute.

Citing sources in the FBI, Journalist Ken Klippenstein reported Sunday that the suspect, Cole Allen, was never flagged by the bureau’s domestic counterterrorism apparatus.

“The 31-year-old alleged gunman who attempted to penetrate the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday was, by all appearances, a normal guy — until he wasn’t,” Klippenstein said.

However, police were contacted about Allen roughly two hours before the attack. Allen’s brother contacted police in New London, Connecticut, after receiving his “manifesto.”

The New London Police Department said in a statement it was contacted at 10:49 p.m., about two hours after the shooting, by an individual who wanted to share information related to it. The police department said it then immediately notified federal law enforcement.

By then, it was apparently too late.

The shooting at the security barricades happened minutes after the event got underway.

The Secret Service and other authorities swarmed the room as guests ducked under tables by the hundreds. Gasps echoed through the ballroom as guests realized something was happening. Hundreds of journalists immediately got on phones to call in information.

“Out of the way, sir!” someone yelled. Others yelled to duck. From one corner, a “God Bless America” chant began as the president was escorted offstage. Outside the hotel, members of the National Guard and other authorities flooded the area as helicopters circled overhead.

After an initial attempt to resume the event, it was scrapped for the night and will be rescheduled.

Trump was unusually conciliatory after what he saw as a third attempt on his life in less than two years. He suggested that his personal politics had made him a repeated target, but he also called for unity and bipartisan healing in an increasingly violent world.

“It’s always shocking when something like this happens. Happened to me, a little bit. And that never changes,” Trump told reporters in a hastily organized news conference at the White House late Saturday.

After Va. Steal, GOP Lawmaker Shares Plan to Give Blue Cities Back to D.C.

(Ben Sellers, Headline USA) Following the recent ballot referendum by Virginia Democrats to gerrymander four Republican-held seats by running them through population-dense Northern Virginia, some want deep-blue Arlington and Alexandria to be returned to Washington, D.C.

An organization called the American Capitol Project was leading the charge to “Make D.C. square again.” It argues that an 1846 “retrocession” allowing Virginia to annex the portion of the District of Columbia south of the Potomac River was unconstitutional.

It notes on its website that at the time of the transfer, residents in Alexandria resoundingly voted against the proposal to transfer the territory to Virginia.

Thus, the decision to do so was in direct violation of statutory language saying that it “should not be in force until after the assent of the people of said county and town should be given thereto… and that if a majority of the votes cast should be in favor of accepting its provisions, the act should in that case (and not otherwise) be in full force.”

The group found a powerful ally in Rep. Richard McCormick, R-Ga., who introduced a bill in the U.S. House on Wednesday to return the affected portions to D.C.

“The Constitution never authorized Congress to carve pieces out of the federal District and hand them back to a state,” McCormick said in a statement.

“Democrats have spent years manipulating maps and boundaries to rig elections,” he added. “The Make DC Square Again Act restores the original ten-mile-square District and ends the artificial advantage Virginia Democrats have recently gained from all the federal bureaucrats moving into Virginia.”

Democrats prevailed in the divisive special election on Tuesday with just under 100,000 votes overall. But a net gain of around 80,000 of those votes came from Arlington and Alexandria, with other D.C.-adjacent counties like Loudoun and Fairfax also adding to the effort to disfranchise rural voters.

Forcing Virginia to cede back the 40-square-mile area would go a long way toward restoring balance in the once-purple state, which has gone deep blue over a roughly 20-year period in which federal-government expansion has fueled much of the growth.

Some social-media users floated the idea that giving Virginia’s blue counties to D.C. could be part of a win–win compromise that would also grant D.C. statehood.

They argued that while it would likely deliver an additional two Democratic senators from the deep-blue district, giving Virginians the opportunity to elect Republican senators would, effectively, prove to be a net gain for the GOP.

But unlike returning the blue areas of Virginia to D.C. — thereby restoring the original intent of the founding framers — granting statehood to the district would require a full-fledged constitutional amendment, since it is expressly designated in the Constitution as its own separate territory and not a state.

Such a compromise solution also would offer no guarantee that refugees from D.C. and other Democrat-run states would not continue to flee to Virginia as a result of their own states’ mismanagement, thus turning it blue again.

Va. Democrat Uses Classic TV Sitcoms to Justify Gerrymandering Red Districts

(Ben Sellers, Headline USA) A clip of an April 23 floor debate in the Virginia Senate over a controversial gerrymandering amendment raised further questions about the flimsy pretenses state Democrats were using in a bid to wrest control of the U.S. House by disfranchising rural voters.

State Sen. Lamont Bagby, a Democrat who represents parts of metropolitan Richmond, claimed that he could speak on behalf of voters in red districts because he had studied up by watching classic television series like the Andy Griffith Show and The Waltons.

“Listen, I almost took issue with the other side saying that we don’t understand,” Bagby said.

“But I grew up watching The Waltons. I grew up with Opie [Ron Howard’s character on the Andy Griffith Show]. I even watched the Dukes of Hazzard,” he added. “I think I know a little bit about rural America.”

The Waltons was based on the true-life experiences of Earl Hamner Jr., who grew up during the Great Depression in the Piedmont region of central Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains. The other two shows were set in fictional locations in North Carolina and Georgia, respectively.

As laughs could be heard off camera from the floor of the legislature, Bagby proceeded to invoke the names of several black characters — including Theo Huxtable of The Cosby Show; and Arnold and Willis Drummond, the two black adopted children on Diff’rent Strokes — before circling back to list more white sitcom characters.

“When I think about why we’re here, we’re not just here — I’m not just here for Theo. I’m not just here for Arnold or Willis,” he said. “I’m here for Opie, John-Boy [Walton]. Blossom, Topanga [the love interest on Boy Meets World].”

In addition to being a state senator, Bagby was elected chair of the state Democratic Party last year.

Critics have cast aspersions on both the motives and the legality of the effort by Virginia Democrats to gerrymander the state via a recent ballot referendum to suspend their bipartisan redistricting commission.

Many have called out the hypocrisy of former President Barack Obama and Gov. Abigail Spanberger, both of whom previously denounced the dangers of partisan gerrymandering until the opportunity came for Democrats to benefit themselves politically.

If courts approve the newly passed measure, it would likely flip Virginia from a 6-5 ratio of Democrat-to-Republican congressional seats into a 10-1 advantage for the radical Left. Five of the newly redrawn districts would begin in deep-blue Fairfax County before fanning out to more rural regions throughout the state.

Democrats maintain that the measure would be “temporary” and that the normal redistricting process would resume in 2030. They have claimed that the move was intended to “restore fairness” in response to the legally supported moves that red states, including Texas, had made to redraw their maps last year.

Democrats, buoyed by dark money from outside the state, outspent Republicans by a roughly three-to-one margin to run ads to support the referendum.

Moreover, several questions surround election irregularities, including a late-night ballot drop and reports of disappearing votes in many counties on election night. President Donald Trump has denounced the special election as “rigged.”

Spanberger, a former CIA operative, campaigned as a moderate but proceeded to pass a raft of radical policies upon taking office, including massive tax hikes, attacks on Second Amendment rights and a reversal of policies cooperating with federal immigration officials.

She also signed onto the controversial National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would effectively hand control of all presidential elections to large blue states like California, New York and Illinois by ignoring the role of the Electoral College.

Rep. Katie Porter Bombs Again in Softball California Gubernatorial Debate

(Ben Sellers, Headline USA) Former Rep. Katie Porter once again showed she was incapable of answering the most basic softball questions during last week’s California gubernatorial debate.

Porter, who is currently fending off intra-party attacks from hedge-fund billionaire Tom Steyer and Biden Cabinet Secretary Xavier Becerra, remains her own worst enemy in her bid for political relevancy.

In response to a question about whether English language proficiency should be required and strictly enforced for truck drivers, her “orange man bad” response said everything about her deranged mindset and leadership capability (or lack thereof).

“I would absolutely fight the Trump administration because the job of the California governor is to protect Californians and right now that includes protecting them from Donald Trump,” Porter responded, apropos of nothing.

Porter then appeared to make some minor overture to address the actual question — by admitting that she would support laws designed to maintain public safety.

“Protecting Californians also includes enforcing traffic laws,” she said. “And we’ve seen sometimes a need for oversight in California. For example, we have seen that the Department of Motor Vehicles was not enforcing rules around DUIs and drivers who had convictions for that.”

However, without addressing the actual issue of illegal immigrants being given driver’s licenses, she quickly pivoted back to a boilerplate response by attacking one of her Republican opponents, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, for alleged racial profiling.

“I am stunned that Mr. Bianco would say to black and brown Californians and immigrants who are being terrorized and racially profiled that you have to get over racism,” Porter ranted.

“It’s not something that you get over, it’s something that you fight,” she continued. “And if he doesn’t understand the importance of that, he has no business representing a state with the diversity of California.”

Among the high-profile incidents involving illegal immigrants who were given California driver’s licenses that subsequently resulted in traffic fatalities is the August 2025 case of Harjinder Singh, an undocumented Indian national who reportedly received licenses from both California and Washington state.

Singh allegedly made an illegal U-turn near Fort Pierce, Florida, that resulted in his truck jackknifing and blocking oncoming traffic lanes, killing three passengers in a minivan. Records indicated that he correctly answered only two of 12 questions on a federal safety assessment of English language proficiency, and he only correctly identified one of four highway traffic signs.

A separate incident involved another illegal from India, Jashanpreet Singh (no known relation to the first culprit). He was operating a semi-truck with a California commercial driver’s license during an October 2025 incident in which he failed to stop in slowed traffic, causing a fiery eight-car pileup that killed three people.

“This tragedy follows a disturbing pattern of criminal illegal aliens driving commercial vehicles on American roads, directly threatening public safety,” the Department of Homeland Security wrote in an X post showing footage of the deadly crash.

Porter offered an equally vacuous response when addressing the serious issue of homelessness in the Golden State.

She claimed — without evidence — in response to a point from Republican opponent Steve Hilton that “the majority of homeless people in California are actually working.”

After Porter declared she would give current California Gov. Gavin Newsom a “B” for his efforts to address the homeless epidemic, Hilton replied, “I’d love to be in your class, Katie.”

She also dodged a question about her storied reputation for being an abusive boss, claiming she had already “apologized” for viral videos that showed her berating staffers.

Despite the multitude of awkward responses, left-leaning outlets like Politico maintained that there was “no breakout moment” during the April 22 debate.

However, it was not the first time Porter has put her foot in her mouth. She famously stormed off a CBS News interview last year after reporter Julie Watts asked her about the need to reach across the aisle and court Trump voters.

As many Democrats did with former Rep. Eric Swalwell following the public revelations of an explosive sex scandal that had long been an open secret among his colleagues, some in her own party are now calling for Porter to drop out of the gubernatorial race.

But it may be to the advantage of Republicans to urge her to remain in it.

With the Democrat vote split several different ways in the state’s “jungle primary,” recent polls have shown Hilton and Bianco as the two frontrunners who would advance to the general-election ballot.

However, Steyer, who has managed to unite both elite Democrat billionaires and anti-billionaire socialists on the left wing, is likely to be the frontrunner if he were to face either Hilton or Bianco in a two-way race.

Becerra, who oversaw the Biden administration’s failed response to the COVID pandemic as President Joe Biden’s secretary of Health and Human Services, previously served alongside Newsom as California’s attorney general.

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) After the chaotic Saturday night attack on the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, President Donald Trump said a Secret Service officer had been shot in the bulletproof vest and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to unnamed government officials, the officer was shot by the alleged attacker, Cole Allen.

However, video footage and Secret Service sources are raising the possibility that the Secret Service officer was actually shot by a colleague, according to investigative journalist Susan Crabtree.

“Sources in the Secret Service community are raising friendly fire questions based on a joint analysis of the below video,” Crabtree said Sunday, posting an AI-enhanced video of the gunman rushing past security.

In the video, a Secret Service officer can be seen in the lower lefthand corner with a handgun, apparently firing at the suspect. Across the hallway, another officer doubles over and falls down before crawling away.

The gunman wasn’t shot, Crabtree noted.

The Secret Service hasn’t publicly commented on the matter. Crabtree said a gag order has been issued on the agents and officers.

Report: U.S. Gov’t Buying Cartel Gold

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) The notorious drug cartel Clan del Golfo, or Gulf Clan, has been described by Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “a violent and powerful criminal organization.” Its leaders are also on a U.S. financial blacklist.

And yet, the U.S. Mint buys an untold amount of gold that’s sourced from mines controlled by that cartel, according to the New York Times.

In an investigation published Sunday, the Times described how gold from cartel-controlled mines winds up at the U.S. Mint.

In the town of Caucasia, for instance, five-man teams of miners pay the Gulf Clan about $400 per month for permission to do business there. Those miners typically sell their gold to local shops, which also pay the cartel $400 per month.

At the shops, workers melt the gold together and pour it into a mold. “And just like that, the first metamorphosis is complete,” the Times reported.

Shopkeepers are required by the Colombian government to keep ledgers, ostensibly to ensure that the people they transact with mine in authorized areas using only hand tools and no mercury. But in practice, the regulatory system is a farce, according to the Times.

“Workers are not mining only with hand tools. Or in authorized areas … [But] the Colombian authorities rarely examine barequero gold’s origins to determine legality,” the Times reported.

After the gold is melted down, the shops sell it to a government-owned exporter, which then sends it to the U.S.

“The exporter said it checks the same database … verifying that the gold is legal. The gold from La Mandinga is mixed with supplies from around Colombia and melted into bars,” the Times reported. “Export records show that many of them, worth about $255 million over the past year or so, arrive in Texas. There the gold becomes American.”

Once the gold is in the U.S., companies here treat it as American. Companies sell the gold to the U.S. Mint, which sells more than $1 billion of investment-grade gold coins per year.

According to the Times, a full supply chain audit would flag the cartel gold. “But for two decades — a period covering nearly all of the post-Sept. 11 gold boom — the Mint never asked its suppliers where they bought gold,” the Times reported, citing a 2024 Treasury Department inspector general’s report.

The Times said it shared its findings with the Treasury Department, which oversees the Mint. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly said he would investigate the gold procurement practices.

“This review is focused on ensuring that the U.S. Mint’s gold suppliers comply with the law and strictly satisfy their obligations, and that the Mint takes every step possible to continue to vigorously safeguard our national security and uphold market integrity,” he said in a written statement to the Times.

In November 2024, the Wall Street Journal first reported on the Gulf Clan’s gold-mining activities — revealing that the cartel commandeered some 30 miles of tunnels from Zijin Mining Group, a Chinese state-controlled company.

The Gulf Clan reportedly commandeered the tunnels through brute force, forcing Zijin security forces to retreat with explosives and gunfire “in what a company official described as trench warfare.”

“Miners often seize Zijin tunnels by first tossing explosives and shooting at guards,” the Journal said at the time, citing a security guard at the site.

“The miners carry jackleg drills and set off as many as 250 detonations a day to break through rock. Their advance has cost Zijin two of the mine’s three sections,” the newspaper reported at the time.

“The richest and deepest part of the gold mine remains in company hands. Zijin has about 4,500 workers there and at processing centers. The company excavates around 4,000 tons of rock a day, which yields an average of 53 pounds of gold.”

The Gulf Clan also reportedly provides its miners with prostitutes, marijuana and other drugs.

(Ben Sellers, Headline USA) A post from Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, highlighting the multiple fraud investigations that have recently made headlines drew a brutal response, with many criticizing the House Judiciary Committee chairman for Republicans’ inaction.

Multiple high-follower influencer accounts followed suit, including David Freeman (aka Gunther Eagleman), who said Jordan “loves corrupt judges.”

Matt Van Swol, a red-pilled ex-Democrat, replied, “I don’t know what’s next, but I know FOR A FACT that the GOP will do exactly NOTHING ABOUT IT!!!!”

Meanwhile, several others contended that the House GOP would indeed address the issue of widespread public corruption, in the form of a strongly worded letter.

Criticism of the House GOP seemed to be one of the rare issues uniting both the Right and Left, with BlueAnon influencer Joanne “JoFromJerz” Carducci and Spinal Tap star Michael McKean among the high-traffic left-wing accounts chiming in to deflect criticism onto the Trump administration.

Much of the right-wing outrage appeared to be directed at Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., who has, among other things, failed to pass the pro-election-integrity SAVE Act and has used pro-forma sessions to block President Donald Trump from making recess appointments to the judiciary.

However, the lower chamber, which has struggled with a razor-thin GOP majority for much of the current congressional session, is not without blame.

Among other things, they have failed to impeach activist deep-state judges, like Judge James “Jeb” Boasberg, who have actively flouted the rule of law in order to thwart the Trump agenda.

Jordan has long been plagued by a “do-nothing” reputation and allegations that he would rather raise funds from outrage-peddling than address the underlying issues through legislative action.

For example, he opposed any intervention into the abusive lawfare sentences of Trump advisers Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro for contempt of Congress during the Biden administration.

“I think both of those contempt [charges] were ridiculous,” Jordan told Headline USA in a June 2024 interview.

Nonetheless, he added that he would not support a House resolution to declare the Democrat-backed contempt charges illegitimate.

“You could have that vote, but I don’t think it’ll change anything relative to what the courts have said and what happens to Bannon,” Jordan said. “… Even if we pass it, I don’t think it would have an impact.”

Alleged White House Attacker’s Anti-Trump Manifesto Revealed

(Headline USA) The man accused of opening fire at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner railed against Trump administration policies and referred to himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin” in writings sent to family members minutes before an attack that authorities increasingly believe was politically motivated, according to The Associated Press.

The AP reported Sunday that the writings were sent shortly before shots were fired Saturday night at the Washington Hilton. They reportedly made repeated references to President Donald Trump without naming him directly and alluded to grievances over a range of administration actions, including U.S. strikes on boats accused of smuggling drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Investigators are treating the writings, along with a trail of social media posts and interviews with family members, as some of the clearest evidence yet of the suspect’s mindset and possible motives.

Authorities uncovered what one law enforcement official described as numerous anti-Trump social media posts linked to the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old California man accused of trying to breach a security checkpoint at the dinner while armed with multiple guns and knives.

Suspect’s brother reached out to Connecticut police

Allen’s brother contacted police in New London, Connecticut, after receiving the writings, according to the law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The New London Police Department said in a statement it was contacted at 10:49 p.m., about two hours after the shooting, by an individual who wanted to share information related to it. The police department said it then immediately notified federal law enforcement.

Allen’s sister, who lives in Maryland, told investigators her brother had legally purchased several weapons from a California gun store and kept them at their parents’ home in Torrance without their knowledge, according to the official. She described her brother as prone to making radical statements, the official said.

The writings examined by AP ran more than 1,000 words and read as a rambling, deeply personal message, opening almost jarringly with a casual “hello everybody!” before shifting into apologies to family members and co-workers, and even strangers he feared could be caught in the violence. The note moved between confession, grievance and farewell, with Allen thanking people in his life even as he sought to explain the attack.

Elsewhere, he veered between political anger, religious justifications and rebuttals to imagined critics. He also made a taunting critique of security at the Washington Hilton, mocking what he described as lax precautions and expressing surprise he was able to enter the hotel armed without detection.

Allen legally bought a .38-caliber semiautomatic pistol in October 2023 and a 12-gauge shotgun two years later, according to the law enforcement official and another one who also spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

Acting head of Justice Dept. says Trump officials were targets

Allen is believed to have traveled by train from California to Chicago and then onto Washington, where he checked himself in as a guest days earlier at the hotel days earlier where the gala dinner was held with its typically tight security, said acting attorney general Todd Blanche. He is believed to have acted alone and is set to face criminal charges on Monday.

Allen attempted to charge toward the cavernous ballroom at the Washington Hilton but was tackled to the ground in a violent scene that resulted in shots being fired, Trump being hurried off the stage unharmed and guests ducking for cover beneath their tables.

“It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks who work in the administration, likely including the president,” Blanche told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

A profile of the shooting suspect emerges

Social media posts that appear to match the suspect show he is a highly educated tutor and amateur video game developer.

A May 2025 profile photo of Allen appears to match the appearance of the man in a photo of the alleged attacker being taken into custody that was posted Saturday night by Trump. The photo, posted to the social networking site LinkedIn, shows him in a cap and gown after graduating with a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Allen earned a bachelor’s degree in 2017 in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He listed his involvement there in a Christian student fellowship and a campus group that battled with Nerf guns.

A local ABC station in Los Angeles included an interview with Allen during his senior year of college as part of a story about new technologies to help people as they age. He had developed a prototype for a new type of emergency brake for wheelchairs.

Allen contributed $25 to a Democratic Party political action committee in support of Kamala Harris for president in 2024, according to federal campaign finance records.

Chaotic scene unfolded minutes after gala began

The shooting at the security barricades happened minutes after the event got underway.

The Secret Service and other authorities swarmed the room as guests ducked under tables by the hundreds. Gasps echoed through the ballroom as guests realized something was happening. Hundreds of journalists immediately got on phones to call in information.

“Out of the way, sir!” someone yelled. Others yelled to duck. From one corner, a “God Bless America” chant began as the president was escorted offstage. Outside the hotel, members of the National Guard and other authorities flooded the area as helicopters circled overhead.

After an initial attempt to resume the event, it was scrapped for the night and will be rescheduled.

Trump was unusually conciliatory after what he saw as a third attempt on his life in less than two years. He suggested that his personal politics had made him a repeated target, but he also called for unity and bipartisan healing in an increasingly violent world.

“It’s always shocking when something like this happens. Happened to me, a little bit. And that never changes,” Trump told reporters in a hastily organized news conference at the White House late Saturday.
