Chinese Illegal Immigrants Arrested in East Texas for Money Laundering

(Bethany Blankley, The Center Square) A rural east Texas district attorney has described how the border crisis is impacting her community after two Chinese illegal immigrants were arrested on money laundering charges.

Their arrest was not the first where “we have encountered Chinese nationals on the highway engaged in illegal activities. We had another large seizure about 11 months ago where we took a half a million dollars from two Chinese nationals,” Van Zandt County District Attorney Tonda Curry said in a news conference.

The recent arrests were the first involving gold bullion, she said. “Their story started with them leaving China and coming here to prey on Americans. It ends right now with us taking $250,000 worth of gold from their organization.”

Last Thursday, Wills Point Police Department Sgt. Charlie Hughes, a K-9 handler, was working traffic enforcement along I-20 when he pulled over two Chinese nationals in a White Chevy Malibu with Michigan plates committing a traffic violation.

Weijian Chen, 25, and Wenqiang Lin, 46, spoke no English and Hughes used a translation phone app to communicate. Lin, who rented the car, agreed to a search and Hughes’ decorated K-9 Hania found a bag full of gold bullion worth nearly $300,000 stuffed under the driver’s seat.

Both Chen and Lin said they didn’t know who the bag of gold belonged to. They were arrested. “Based on my training, I know that it is very unlikely that Lin or Chen could have transported the gold bullion through airport Transportation Security Administration security checkpoint with[out] filing a United States Currency Transaction Report,” Hughes said.

Their claims and suspicious activity fell flat, authorities said, like others arrested by Operation Lone Star officers, The Center Square first reported.

Hughes contacted Homeland Security and learned that the Chinese men illegally entered in California last September and December. Instead of detaining them or processing them for removal, Border Patrol agents released them, giving them notices to appear before an immigration judge.

Investigators found that Chen left China last September, and from Hong Kong flew to Turkey and then to Mexico. Once he arrived in Mexico, he traveled by foot to Tecate, California, where he illegally entered the U.S. with a large group of mostly military age Chinese men.

Last December, Chen also illegally entered in California, was apprehended by Border Patrol “and even though he was attempting to enter illegally was allowed to enter our current administration’s policies,” Curry said. He was also given an NTA, like Lin.

Both men are currently being held in Van Zandt County Jail.

They claimed to be “poor immigrants who have nothing,” Curry said, but “left Los Angeles on an airplane, flew to Atlanta, according to them for play, for vacation.”

After they arrived in Atlanta, they rented a car and were stopped by a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit for a traffic violation. The officer’s narcotics dog searched the vehicle and found nothing. The deputy then tracked their car and contacted the rental company. They both had registered driver’s licenses, from California and Hawaii.

They went back to the rental company, rented a different vehicle, and drove to Marietta, Georgia, “an area that according to the local law enforcement is known to be controlled by the cartel, by people who prey on U.S. citizens selling drugs,” Curry said.

They left Marietta, drove south to Jacksonville, Florida, where they stayed for roughly two hours, then headed north where they were intercepted on Interstate 20 heading to Dallas and “presumably back to LA where the car was due to be turned in,” she said. “Those are the type of people that are coming in at our southern border … who come here and help organizations that prey on U.S. citizens.”

Curry also questioned any claims the men may have made to Border Patrol agents, stating they appear to have illegally entered the U.S. to engage in organized crime potentially linked to cartels, gangs, drug trafficking and money laundering.

“When you come here and you’re engaging in criminal activity in less than a year, you’ll never convince me that you came with good intent,” she said.

Van Zandt County is one of 55 counties whose leaders have declared an invasion, The Center Square exclusively reported.

Under the Biden administration, the greatest number of Chinese nationals have illegally entered the U.S., nearly 160,000, including hundreds who’ve reportedly breached U.S. military bases, The Center Square reported.

Their arrest “really highlights and is a great example of the failure of the Biden-Harris administration’s policies and our southern border. If you don’t think that the chaos down at the border is not affecting rural East Texas, this arrest is a prime example of that,” state Rep. Jill Dutton, a Republican who represents the area, said. “The Biden-Harris administration’s failed border policies are harming Americans. If you think this problem is limited to just the border cities, think again.”

Walz Says Abbott ‘Has a Point’ on Border Crisis

(Bethany Blankley, The Center Square) – Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the presumptive Democratic vice presidential nominee, admits that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “has a point” on the border crisis.

The Democratic governor has waffled on his views about the border, opposed border wall funding, embraced so-called sanctuary city status, and blamed the Texas governor for the border crisis, The Center Square reported.

Walz also said in a recent interview that there is a border crisis and Democrats need to acknowledge it – breaking from the view of his presumed presidential running mate, President Joe Biden’s designated border czar, Vice President Kamala Harris, who has repeatedly claimed the border was closed and secure and that she didn’t need to go there.

Walz said Abbott’s busing strategy effectively forced Democrats nationwide to acknowledge a border crisis exists and “the problem in Texas is pretty bad.”

When asked about Abbott’s busing strategy, he told the Ezra Klein Show, “Say what you will about him, but Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began busing migrants around the country and created genuine crises in different cities in doing that. And he did it in a very low way – he didn’t offer coordination – but the fact that these cities went into such dangerous politics when they began getting migrants who actually were in Texas suggests the problem in Texas is pretty bad.”

Abbott refutes the repeated argument made by Democratic leaders that Texas created the problem, pointing to the policies of the Biden-Harris administration. He has repeatedly called on the president and Harris to secure the border and received no response. As the administration was unlawfully releasing inadmissible foreign nationals into Texas border communities after they illegally entered the U.S., Abbott launched the busing strategy to provide them with relief.

He offered voluntary transportation to self-described sanctuary cities. Since April 2022, more than 120,000 illegal immigrants volunteered to receive taxpayer funded transportation to six Democratic-run cities, The Center Square reported.

Abbott has also pointed out that the Biden-Harris administration has been transporting millions throughout the country on flights for years without coordinating with local officials.

Klein suggested that voters appear to be resentful against Democratic leaders about the border crisis “because they feel like a problem is tolerated.”

“I think it’s a reasonable read,” Walz replied, saying, “When they’re asked if it’s a crisis, you need to answer, ‘Yes, it’s a crisis.’ And then deal with it.”

“Leaving it and saying it’s not a problem is a political detriment to Democrats. Just acknowledge it is. You’re not denigrating anyone, and you’re not helping them – being the immigrants – by saying it’s not a problem. Because they know better than anybody it’s a problem. Because they’re stuck at a border community with nowhere to go.”

“I don’t disagree that Gov. Abbott is pointing out some of these things,” Walz said.

At another point in the interview, Walz said, “We’ve got to have border control. You’ve got to know who’s coming in. You’ve got to modernize that.”

“We have the right to control our border,” he said, adding that “the solution was the Lankford-Sinema bill.” He said the bill didn’t go anywhere because “Trump didn’t want it.”

The bill went nowhere because Senate Democrats opposed it and later distanced themselves from it. The bill doesn’t limit illegal entries as it purports and the latest Biden-Harris plan, critics say, would usher another two million illegal foreign nationals into the country, The Center Square reported.

Democrats in the U.S. House and Senate also opposed a border security bill the House passed, which the Senate wouldn’t even consider.

Walz criticized Trump, saying his idea of border security was “build the wall,” a plan that was “just so visceral that that’s going to keep people out.”

On his first day in office, President Joe Biden halted construction of the border wall and Texas sued. Abbott also began building Texas’ own border wall on state land.

After years of litigation, a federal court recently ruled the administration was required by federal law to continue the border wall’s construction.

Texas’ border wall is part of Abbott’s border security mission, Operation Lone Star. The Texas legislature has allocated nearly $12 billion to fund OLS. OLS’s budget totals more than multiple state fiscal year budgets and more than what the Trump administration allocated to federal border security efforts in Texas, The Center Square first reported.

Abbott has called on the Biden-Harris administration and Congress to refund Texas taxpayers, who he argues are funding border security for all Americans, not just Texans. A Republican Texas congressman introduced a bill that would require the federal government to reimburse Texas. Biden, Harris, House and Senate Democrats oppose the idea.

Appearing to break from Harris, Walz told Klein, “Texas shouldn’t by itself absorb or pay for this problem; we should all collectively figure out how to do it.”

Federal Government Borrowed $5 Billion a Day in Fiscal Year 2024

(Tom Gantert, The Center Square) – So far in the fiscal year 2024, the federal government has had to borrow about $5 billion every day.

The Congressional Budget Office said Thursday the federal budget deficit was $1.5 trillion for the first 10 months of fiscal year 2024, which covers October through July.

The CBO stated that the $1.5 trillion deficit for the first 10 months of FY 2024 was $103 billion less than the deficit recorded during the same period last fiscal year.

The federal budgeting agency projects the deficit for 2024 will be $2.0 trillion. The deficit for fiscal year 2023 was $1.7 trillion. But the CBO says the differences in the deficits those years could be attributable to budgeting “timing shifts.”

“We’re nearly at the end of fiscal year 2024, and while most of America is focused on the momentum in the race for the White House, beneath the surface our nation’s fiscal health has continued to worsen,” said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, in a media release. “We’ve just surpassed $35 trillion in gross debt, and today’s CBO projections estimate we’ve borrowed another $242 billion in July, or $5 billion each day this fiscal year,” she continued.

“Our fiscal trajectory cannot be left on autopilot – the stakes are far too high and the consequences far too steep to leave our national debt climbing in perpetuity.”

The Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which was founded by Peter Peterson, the former secretary of commerce for President Richard Nixon, tracks the national debt at $35.08 trillion, or $104,193 for every person in America, as of Aug. 8.

“Historically, our largest deficits were caused by increased spending around national emergencies like major wars or the Great Depression,” the foundation stated on its website. “Today, our deficits are caused mainly by predictable structural factors: our aging baby-boom generation, rising healthcare costs, and a tax system that does not bring in enough money to pay for what the government has promised its citizens.”

The think tank Truth in Accounting states the real national debt is closer to $156.8 trillion if unfunded Social Security and Medicare promises were included.

State Coalition Calls on SCOTUS to Rule Against Biden-Harris in Asylum Case

(Bethany Blanklay, The Center Square) – A 15-state coalition led by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on a multi-jurisdictional asylum case.

Moody previously led a 17-state coalition calling on the Ninth Circuit to do the same.

At issue are multiple lawsuits filed over a Department of Homeland Security asylum policy, created through a “Circumvention of Lawful Pathways” rule. It codified aspects of the Los Angeles Declaration of Migration and Protection, endorsed by 21 countries in June 2022.

The declaration “specifically lays out the goal of collectively expanding access to regular pathways for migrants and refugees into the United States,” according to a February 2023 Federal Register entry.

The “lawful pathways” rule is one of over a dozen called illegal by U.S. House Republicans when they impeached DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in February. It involves the U.S. State Department partnering with multiple countries to move foreign nationals into the U.S., DHS building and expanding dozens of processing facilities, and moving hundreds of thousands of people into the U.S. through a phone app.

Part of the rule reinstated a modified version of a Trump-era asylum ban, which prohibits foreign nationals who were living and working in countries or transited through countries other than Mexico from applying for asylum in the U.S. and multiple groups sued. After the Ninth Circuit ruled in the administration’s favor, the Biden-Harris administration reversed course, saying instead of defending the policy it preferred to enter into a settlement agreement.

In response, Ninth Circuit Judge Lawrence VanDyke chastised the administration saying, “The administration’s abrupt about-face makes no sense as a legal matter. Either it previously lied to this court by exaggerating the threat posed by vacating the rule, or it is now hiding the real reason it wants to hold this case in abeyance.”

Next, a coalition of attorneys general, led by Alabama and Kansas, filed a motion to intervene, agreeing with Judge VanDyke. VanDyke denied their request.

The 15-state coalition, led by Moody, petitioned the Supreme Court in support of intervenor states.

“Derelict President Biden and failed Border Czar Harris have been manipulative since day one in their plan to demolish our border,” Moody said. “In fact, a federal judge in a Florida case even said that their actions were ‘akin to posting a flashing ‘come in, we’re open’ sign.’ I, along with my colleagues, have once again filed a brief in support of intervenor states seeking to prevent collusive settlements between this administration and like-minded, open-border activist groups that are attempting to influence border-security policy behind closed doors.”

The coalitions’ amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court states, “In this case, the government has signaled that it is once again playing similar games. Specifically, the government has announced ‘settlement discussions’ with groups politically aligned with the current Administration regarding the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways Rule. And despite the risk of a collusive settlement, the Ninth Circuit denied the States’ motion to intervene to protect their distinct interest in stemming the tide of unlawful migration into this country over the southern border that the current Administration has let loose.”

Joining Moody in the coalition are attorneys general representing Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

The Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule was used to facilitate processing millions of illegal border crossers into the country, fast tracking their release instead of deporting them. Through the rule, DHS was flying hundreds of thousands of illegal foreign nationals to states nationwide, a policy only recently halted after an internal review found no vetting was being done and some illegal foreign nationals were using fraudulent information to enter the country.

The rule also enabled millions of Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans through a CHNV parole program to be processed, or who await travel authorization, to enter the country who under current law are prohibited from doing so. As more CHNV parolees were released into the country, more were being arrested nationwide for committing violent crimes against Americans, The Center Square reported.

MURDOCK: Kacklin’ Kamala and Tampon Tim Will Make You Miss Sleepy Joe

(Deroy Murdock, Headline USA) You can fool some of the people, for about two weeks.

Since Kacklin’ Kamala Harris pried the Anti-Democratic Party’s nomination from Sleepy Joe Biden in a bloodless coup d’etat on July 21, the vice president slithered between two rocks, escaped her far-left skin, and emerged as Kamala The Neo-moderate.

The fracking-ban supporter? Gone! The Green New Deal’s co-sponsor? Vanished! The enemy of private health insurance? Disappeared!

The obedient regime media conspired in this makeover and let Harris answer zero questions for 18 days after she slid a banana peel beneath Biden’s shoe.

Just as the Margaret Kamala Thatcher disguise seemed plausible, Harris shattered that illusion on Tuesday. The Border Czarina Who Never Was, hung a sharp left when she unveiled her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn.

The 60-year-old former congressman—who could moonlight as Biden’s frumpy 75-year-old brother—is America’s hardest-Left V.P. wannabe, ever. By picking Walz, the real Kamala returned—big league.

Walz’s fiscal philosophy is Everything for All.

Walz signed a May 2023 biennial budget that squeezes $9.7 billion from Minnesotans, including tax hikes on incomes, sales, franchises, vehicles, and even cannabis. Walz also boosted two-year outlays by a whopping 39.3%.

But Walz is more than just an old-fashioned tax-and-spend liberal.

“He [Trump] talks about this wall,” Walz told CNN last month. “I always say, let me know how high it is. If it’s 25 feet, then I will invest in a 30-foot-ladder factory.” Walz also favors sanctuary cities.

Walz’s Office of New Americans pampers illegal aliens who savor his smorgasbord of no-cost treats. These include free healthcare, free college tuition, and drivers licenses—all the better to turn these foreign invaders into illegal voters.

  • Regarding castration, mastectomies, and other sexual mutilation of children, Walz said in March 2023: “Protecting and supporting access to gender-affirming healthcare is essential to being a welcoming and supportive state to the community.”

Ten-year-old boys who want to slice themselves into girls, and vice versa, may do so without parental consent. Moms and dads who object can lose custody of such children.

Tampon Tim ordered menstrual products into schoolboys’ bathrooms, from grades four through 12.

Walz’s faux-libertarianism T-boned into his East German governing style during COVID-19. Atop lengthy lockdowns and mask mandates, Walz’s so-called snitch line helped Minnesotans rat on those who violated pandemic decrees.

  • “We saw large, peaceful protests,” Walz said on June 1, 2020, as the George Floyd riots incinerated Minneapolis. Dozens of buildings burned to the ground (including a police precinct) among 150 set ablaze and some 1,500 damaged. Losses totaled $500 million.

According to an October 2020 Minnesota Senate report, “Governor Tim Walz and elected local leaders identified with the causes promoted by the demonstrators, causing them to lose sight of their responsibility to protect the public from criminal acts committed during the riots.”

Walz himself called the government response an “abject failure.”

Meanwhile, Walz’s wife found this carnage refreshing.

“I could smell the burning tires,” Gwen Walz said at the time. America’s potential Second Lady continued: “That was a very real thing, and I kept the windows open as long as I could because I felt like that was such a touchstone of what was happening.”

Walz uttered his most disturbing comment not in college but on July 29. He told the White Dudes for Harris: “Don’t ever shy away from our progressive values. One person’s socialism is another person’s neighborliness.”

This chilling statement echoes Kamala’s 2020 campaign video that trivializes equality before the law and embraces “equity,” so “we all end up at the same place.”

Where do government leaders want their people “at the same place?” For starters: Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea.

Kacklin’ Kamala and Tampon Tim make Sleepy Joe look like Daddy Bush. The 2024 Democrat ticket promises the menace of American Marxism.

Iraq Wants to Legalize Pedophilia, Lower Legal Age of Marriage for Girls to 9

(Dmytro “Henry” Aleksandrov, Headline USA) A Muslim coalition in Iraq has pushed proposals to lower the legal age of marriage for girls to just nine years old, which resulted in a massive backlash from activists and rights groups who dared to oppose pedophiles.

The Daily Mail reported that protesters demonstrated in Baghdad, the country’s capital, this week to express their outrage at pro-pedophile changes that would allow religious sects to legislate on aspects of personal status rather than the courts.

The news source added that since many Iraqi marriages are conducted informally and left unregistered, the revisions would allow figures from Sunni and Shia religious sects to finalize unions between people in law.

Critics said that the Shia code would be based on ‘Jaafari jurisprudence,’ which would allow girls as young as nine and boys as young as 15 to get married. The current Iraqi law states that a man and a woman must be at least 18 years old to get married.

“The Iraqi community categorically rejects these proposals. It is a degrading step for both Iraqi men and women alike. This is what we have been fighting against for years,” women’s rights activist Suhalia Al Assam said.

A coalition of conservative Shia Islamist parties, which form the largest bloc in parliament, has pushed the amendments to Law No. 188, the Personal Status Law of 1959.

The Coordination Framework attempted to hold a first reading on July 24, 2024, but postponed the plans until Aug. 4, 2024, after meeting resistance from people.

Protesters gathered in Tahrir Square in the capital on Aug. 8, 2024, to oppose the bill.

Yanar Mohammed, president of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), said that the Coordination Framework was using the changes to distract from their own “corruption” and political failures, adding that the proposals served to “terrorize Iraqi women and civil society with a legislation that strips away all the rights that Iraqi women gained in modern times.”

She also said that the bill would “force archaic Islamic sharia on them that regards women as bodies for pleasure and breeding, and not as [human beings] with human rights.”

Foreign Agents Flood CCP-Owned TikTok w/ Anti-Trump Videos

(Dmytro “Henry” Aleksandrov, Headline USA) Foreign actors have been flooding TikTok, the app owned by Chinese communists, with “false” and “incendiary” videos targeting Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The Wall Street Journal published its new report, in which the news source identified 91 accounts on TikTok with overseas connections posting malicious lies about Trump. The news source added that TikTok has suggested videos from the 91 accounts to its users more than 108 million times. The videos were posted on accounts in China, Nigeria, Iran and Vietnam. Nigeria was the only country that wasn’t a communist or Islamic state.

The anti-Trump videos, created using artificial intelligence, push lies about the Republican presidential nominee. For example, one of the foreign videos appeared to predict the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt against Trump. In March 2024, a suspected Nigeria-based account posted a video that claimed an “unidentified gunman” opened fire at a Trump event on March 4, 2024, just four months before the Butler, Pa., attack on Trump.

Another video falsely claimed that Melania Trump filed for divorce from her husband because she has been “struggling to cope with her husband’s persistent body odor and alleged diaper-wearing habit.” Yet another video said Trump attacked a New York judge.

The Journal found that three of the accounts’ posted videos were recorded in China, and two additional accounts had their language set to Chinese in the app, linking them directly to the communist state.

TikTok told the news source that it has yet to be determined whether the China accounts belong to a state-backed influence operation.

It is unclear what the accounts’ intent is. The Journal wrote that some may profit from their videos while others want to create tension in the American political discourse.

The news source reported that many accounts had similar, or in some cases, identical, content. Like the 91 profiles reviewed by the Journal, spam accounts often steal each other’s messaging, making it difficult to tell whether the same network runs the accounts or are unrelated copycats.

Mom of 19-Yr.-Old Who Died in Iraq Denounces Walz’s Cowardice

(Dmytro “Henry” Aleksandrov, Headline USA) A mother of an American soldier who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq on June 29, 2006, when he was just 19 years old, called Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz a coward because he was expected to lead her son’s team into combat but got out not to risk his life and run for Congress instead.

“I don’t think it’s fair that (Walz) takes credit when he didn’t step up to the plate. Walz claims a rank he never earned. When he was called to serve and protect our country, he didn’t. To publicly present false prestige of his unearned rank as an inaccurate representation is a falsehood of who he truly is,” Kathy Miller, the mother of Kyle Miller, said.

The Daily Mail reported that the mother said that other soldiers, however, “stepped up to the plate,” adding that her son wasn’t even old enough to buy alcohol in the United States when he served in the military.

She then said that Walz might act the same way if he became vice president.

“It was the coward’s way out. It makes you wonder if he will bow out in some manner and not accomplish the job he is supposed to get done,” she said.

Mrs. Miller then described how the entire town of Willmar, Minn., fell silent when the casket with her son’s body was returned from Iraq and driven through the streets.

According to her, members of the Minnesota National Guard, past and present, lined up to salute as his remains were taken to the town’s civic center.

She also said that one thousand mourners attended his funeral. Walz was not among them.

It was only after the veteran’s mother pointed out Walz’s lack of character that Walz spokesperson Lauren Hitt issued a statement.

“The Governor honors Kyle Miller’s service and mourns him and all those fellow guardsmen and service members who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Hitt said.

Half-Naked Texas Teacher Rescues 15-Yr.-Old Girl from Attempted Sex Assault

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) A “hero” middle school teacher stormed out of his home, half-naked and armed, to save a 15-year-old girl from a brutal assault and attempted rape.

The teacher, David Garza, quickly intervened when he heard the girl screaming for help on July 28, shortly after she exited a public bus. The man reportedly took the bus with the young girl before pursuing her down the street.

“I looked down the window and I saw a man beating up a woman on the ground and he was trying to take her clothes off,” Garza told KHOU 11.

He added, “I ran upstairs, I grabbed my pistol. I ran outside, and asked, ‘What’s going on?’ The girl screamed, ‘I’m 15, help me!’ So, I pointed the gun at him and told him to get off her.”

Surveillance footage shows Garza confronting the attacker, who fled the scene after being confronted with the gun. Before fleeing, the assailant had the girl by her hair.

“Hey! Hey! Come here,” Garza is heard yelling at the man.

“He took his hands off right the way. He went chasing after her, so I went chasing after him and she got away,” the middle school teacher stated.

A neighbor praised Garza for his quick action. “At first, I was scared ‘cause I literally thought she was about to be raped. I think If he didn’t come out, she would have been raped or something,” she said.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office released footage of a man they believe is responsible for the alleged attempted rape. He is seen wearing a black hoodie with a white Reebok logo.

This attempted assault comes less than a month after authorities reported that 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray was brutally murdered and sexually assaulted by two illegal aliens from Venezuela.

This vicious assault comes less than a month after authorities reported that 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray was brutally murdered and sexually assaulted by Venezuelan nationals who lived in the country illegally.

Franklin Pena, 26, and Johan Jose Martínez Rangel, 22, each face capital murder charges for the killing of Nungaray.

The two men allegedly ran into the 12-year-old as she was buying snacks from a 7/11 near her house.

They lured her into a bridge, where they tied her up, removed her pants and sexually assaulted her. They then strangled her and dumped her body in a ditch, according to prosecutors.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement apprehended Martínez on March 14 but released him the same day. Border Patrol arrested Pena on May 28 but he was also released and ordered to reappear later.

Feds Charge Smartmatic President for 2016 Election Fraud

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Federal prosecutors have slapped Roger Alejandro Pinate Martinez, founder and president of Smartmatic, with bribery and money laundering related to the 2016 presidential election in the Philippines.

Two other executives, Jorge Miguel Vasquez and Juan Andres Donato Bautista, also face charges in connection with what prosecutors claimed was a scheme to “retain and obtain business” related to the election.

Smartmatic is a voting machines company that came under fire during the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The company is now suing Fox News and Newsmax for defamation, alleging their reporting on the company harmed their business. It wants $2.7 billion in damages.

Smartmatic spokesperson Samira Saba did not immediately respond to Headline USA’s request for comment.

Prosecutors allege that Martinez and Vasquez caused the payment of at least $1 million to Bautista in exchange for business guarantees involving voting machines and other services.

“The co-conspirators allegedly funded the bribes through a slush fund that was created by over-invoicing the cost per voting machine for the 2016 Philippine elections,” the DOJ stated in a press statement.

To conceal and justify these payments, the defendants allegedly used coded language, fraudulent contracts and a sham loan agreement.

“The co-conspirators then allegedly laundered funds related to the bribery scheme through bank accounts located in Asia, Europe, and the United States, including in the Southern District of Florida,” the DOJ added.

Pinate and Vasquez each face one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and an additional violation of the act. Each count carries up to five years in prison.

Bautista, Pinate, Vasquez and a third individual — Elie Moreno — are each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and three counts of international laundering of monetary instruments. These violations carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
