(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) In the midst of House debates and votes regarding the House Speaker, Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C., called out rival Cori Bush, D-Mo., for making racist remarks about Rep. Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican who has been nominated for the speakership. the Daily Wire reported.
Bush Tweeted her racist comments as Republicans squabble over the whether Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., should become the next House Speaker, or someone like Donalds, whose name has been floated by the Freedom Caucus.
“FWIW, @ByronDonalds is not a historic candidate for Speaker. He is a prop,” Bush tweeted before describing him as an Uncle Tom being manipulated by his white Republican masters.
“Despite being Black, he supports a policy agenda intent on upholding and perpetuating white supremacy. His name being in the mix is not progress—it’s pathetic.
In response, Bishop took the floor and called Bush “grotesquely racist.”
“Last night, I sat within feet of Mr. Donalds as the tweet of another member-elect appeared on the screen. That member-elect wrote, and sent out to America, that Byron Donalds is ‘a prop,’” Bishop said. “I’ve spent a good bit of time with Mr. Donalds, especially lately. He ain’t no prop.”
Bishop continued to slam Bush for her elitist commentary as House Republicans applauded Bishop’s speech.
“And if he were a prop, he wouldn’t be sitting where he’s sitting. This is the tired, old, grotesquely racist rhetoric that we’ve seen far too long!”
As of Friday afternoon, McCarthy had lost multiple ballots in pursuit of the House Speakership.
