Hawley Tries to Block Dems from Forcing Women to Register for Military Draft

'Most Americans say if a woman wants to serve that's wonderful ... But the idea that they be forced into compulsory service, I just think it's crazy...'

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., has preemptively filed an amendment to block radical Democrats from requiring young women to enter the military draft, Fox News reported.

Senate Armed Services Chair Jack Reed, D-R.I., suggested that Congress alter the National Defense Authorization Act’s language, to require “all Americans,” rather than males only, register for the draft.

Many Republicans on the Senate Armed Services Committee agreed with Reed.

Reed’s proposal uses the word “person” to denote those who must enter the draft upon reaching age 18. But according to Hawley, the proposal is “so wrong and out of touch with most Americans.”

Hawley did not oppose the inclusion of women in the military, but railed against compulsion via the draft.

“Most Americans say if a woman wants to serve that’s wonderful—and by the way, women have been absolutely central to our war efforts since we have been a country, in many different ways, including of course fighting,” he said. “But the idea that they be forced into compulsory service, I just think it’s crazy.”

Hawley also suggested that his constituents clearly do not support the “reform” attempts.

“I know that’s how the people of Missouri feel,” Hawley said.

“The fact that the Democrats—this is one of their top priorities for a bill that’s supposed to be about funding the military,” he said. “What do they want to do? They want to force women to have to enter the draft.”

But in yet another instance of the Republican Party betraying its base, half of the Republicans on the Senate’s Armed Services committee sided with the Democrats attempt to demand military service from young women.

Republicans Deb Fischer of Nebraska, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Dan Sullivan of Alaska, and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina all ignored the desires of the Republican base in the name of gender equality.
