(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) CBS Mornings is at it again, with a new segment claiming that pro-life advocates are making it difficult for hospitals to treat pregnancy-related problems in states that have outlawed abortion.
According to Newsbusters, host Nate Burleson introduced the segment by discussing how the overturn of Roe v. Wade and subsequent state battles have effected the ability to get drugs to solve non-abortion related issues.
“The fight over limits on abortion is spreading to some unexpected places including drug stores,” he said. “At least one medication commonly prescribed for arthritis, lupus and even cancer is becoming harder to get after the Supreme Court allowed states to restrict or outlaw abortions.”
Guest reporter Janet Shamlian started her report by introducing 10-year-old Noraa Wise, who has an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation in her bones. Wise was prescribed the drug methotrexate, which is generally used to treat arthritis and some cancers.
According to Shamlian, it “can also be used to terminate non-viable ectopic pregnancies where a fertilized egg grows outside the womb.”
Since the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade some women report trouble getting the medication by pharmacists concerned they could be “held responsible for aiding an abortion,” Shamlian said.
Wise’s mother, Tyse, came on the interview, explaining that she wondered if this would prevent her daughter from getting the medication she needs.
The report neglected to answer this question, and quickly breezed on to the next target.
Shamlian moved over to Missouri, where a woman named Annie England Noblin used methotrexate to treat her arthritis.
Shamlian expressed concern about her access to the medication via her neighborhood pharmacy, but Noblin quickly explained that she does still have access to treatment.
“They needed to make sure my rheumatologist actually prescribed me methotrexate for my RA and not so that I could, you know, abort a fetus,” Noblin said.
The report then moved on to Texas, where Shamlian introduced OB/GYM John Thoppil, who had a poster of former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg hanging in his office.
In Indiana, Missouri and Texas it is illegal to treat ectopic pregnancies with methotrexate. The drug is legally allowed for the treatment other illnesses.
