Biden Inspires Troops With Claim That Declaration of Independence “Sounds Corny”

'You know, we're a unique country in many ways... '

(Tony Sifert, Headline USA) In a Freudian slip made during an address to American troops stationed in Poland, President Joe Biden exposed his party’s basic discomfort with the founding creed of the United States.

Addressing members of the 82nd Airborne Division stationed in Rzeszów, Poland, Uncle Joe thanked the troops for their commitment to defending “literally the only country in the world based on an idea.”

“You know, we’re a unique country in many ways,” Biden said. “And we’re the only country — the only country in the world not based — organized based on geography or ethnicity or religion or race or anything else; we’re based on an idea.”

After paraphrasing the first sentence of the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, Biden said that the ideals expressed therein “sound corny,” but are nevertheless “the truth of who we are.”

Biden obviously likes the rhetorical effect of the phrase — no doubt he believes it contributes to the carefully crafted image of an aw-shucks son of the working class — as he has had recourse to it before.

In his big voting speech in July 2021, Biden told the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia that “[electing Democrats] requires fair-mindedness; devotion to justice; corny as it sounds, a love of country.”

A few months later, Biden employed the word again in telling the story of former Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner.

“No wonder she was a tireless champion in protecting Delaware’s public lands and waters,” Biden said. “It sounds corny, but she was a farmer’s daughter.”

Some have claimed that Biden’s speech to the troops in Poland sounded like a pep talk in advance of an American move into Ukraine.

“You’re going to see, when you’re there, and some of you have been there, you’re going to see women, young people, standing in front of a damn tank just saying, ‘I’m not leaving, I’m holding my ground,'” Biden said.

Breitbart called the suggestion that U.S. troops would eventually be in Ukraine a “stumble.”
