Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced this week that he is inviting United Nations officials to investigate “contemporary forms of racism” in the U.S.
“The United States intends to issue a formal, standing invitation to all UN experts who report and advise on thematic human rights issues,” Blinken said on Tuesday. “As a first step, we have reached out to offer an official visit by the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism and the UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues.”
The announcement comes amid a dispute with China over its refusal to allow international investigators to probe its human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims.
“Great nations such as ours do not hide from our shortcomings; they acknowledge them openly and strive to improve with transparency,” Blinken claimed. “In so doing, we not only work to set the standard for national responses to these challenges, we also strengthen our democracy, and give new hope and motivation to human rights defenders across the globe.”
Blinken also praised the UN Human Rights Council for adopting a resolution this week that calls for “an international independent expert mechanism” to investigate police discrimination against black people across the globe.
GOP lawmakers blasted the Biden administration for focusing on non-issues such as “systemic racism” in the U.S. instead of real human rights abuses, such as the Cuba Communist Party’s attempt to crackdown on pro-freedom protests on the island.
They invite the @UN to investigate “contemporary forms of racism” in America but don’t do squat to get the @UN to investigate & get involved in preventing state sponsored murder just 90 miles off our shores in #Cuba https://t.co/sTEmsvDT8L

The U.N. has now become a tool for the most oppressive regimes in the world to attack the United States.
And instead of pushing back and defending America, Joe Biden is welcoming UN investigators with open arms. How pathetic. https://t.co/SoLmF9kL95
