Trump Says NATO Should Shoot Down Russian Aircraft That Enter Their Airspace

(Dave DeCamp, Antiwar.com) President Trump said on Tuesday that NATO countries should shoot down Russian aircraft that enter their airspace, comments that come as tensions are soaring between Moscow and the Western military alliance in Eastern Europe.

The president made the comments when meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York City. “Yes, I do,” Trump said when asked if NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft that enter its airspace.

His comment came on the same day that NATO held Article 4 talks over allegations from Estonia that Russian jets had, for 12 minutes, entered the airspace of Vaindloo, an uninhabited island in the Gulf of Finland that belongs to Estonia and is located approximately 15 miles north of the country’s coast.

For its part, Russia has called Estonia’s allegations baseless, and the Russian Defense Ministry stated that the jets were on a scheduled flight to Kaliningrad, claiming that the “flight path lay over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea, more than three kilometers from the island of Vaindloo.”

During the NATO Article 4 consultations on Tuesday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte acknowledged the Russian jets posed no threat. “In the latest airspace violation we discussed today in Estonia, NATO forces promptly intercepted and escorted the aircraft without escalation, as no immediate threat was assessed,” he said.

When asked if NATO would shoot down any manned or unmanned Russian aircraft that enters its airspace, Rutte said, “Decisions on whether to engage intruding aircraft, such as firing upon them, are, of course, taking in real time, are always based on available intelligence regarding the threat posed by the aircraft, including questions we have to answer like intent, armament and potential risk to Allied forces, civilians or infrastructure.”

While NATO countries recently shot down drones in Poland, which they alleged were launched by Russia, shooting down a manned jet would mark a significant escalation and could lead to a full-blown war between the alliance and Russia, which could quickly turn nuclear.

Syria’s Former al-Qaeda Chief Arrives in New York, Sits Down With Former CIA Director

(Dave DeCamp, Antiwar.com) Syria’s de facto president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former al-Qaeda leader, arrived in New York City on Sunday, where he will attend the UN General Assembly, making him the first Syrian leader to do so since 1967.

On Monday, Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, attended the Concordia Summit, where he sat down with Ret. US Army Gen. David Petraeus, who was the CIA Director from 2011-2012, when the US began a covert CIA campaign, known as Operation Timber Sycamore, to funnel weapons into Syria that ended up in the hands of the country’s al-Qaeda affiliate.

Sharaa had founded Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliate, known as the al-Nusra Front, in 2012. Before that, he fought for al-Qaeda in Iraq and was imprisoned by US forces for several years, something Petraeus pointed out when he spoke with the Syrian leader.

“The fact is, we were on different sides when I was commanding the surge in Iraq. You were, of course, detained by US forces for some five years, including, again, when I was the four-star there. And here you are now as the president of Syria, which your forces liberated from the murderous Bashar al-Assad regime, to participate in your first UN General Assembly,” Petraeus said.

The former CIA chief continued, “Earlier this year, you met the president of the United States among many other world leaders. Please help us understand how you got from al-Qaeda in Iraq 20 years ago to where you are today, Syria’s head of state on stage in New York City.”

Sharaa replied through a translator,” It is good, at a time we were in combat, and we now move to discourse. We moved from war to discourse. Someone who went through war is one who knows the importance of peace … we can not judge the past based on the rules of today, and we can not judge today based on the rules of the past.”

The former al-Qaeda chief added, “There was an occupation of Iraq, there has been a lot of conflicts in the area, in Palestine. Syria was facing a lot of challenges. The phase at that time, all of these factors were contributing to the choices of that phase. What’s important, the intent was clear when it comes down to protecting and defending people, and defending human rights, the women, the children, from the injustice that was taking place in the region. Perhaps there were some mistakes. Sometimes in a person’s journey, there are some mistakes, but what’s important is to focus on defending people … Our commitment to that line is what brought us here today, sitting here among allies and friends.”

At one point in the conversation, Petraeus said that he was a “fan” of Sharaa and asked the Syrian leader if he had been getting enough sleep. After stepping down from the CIA in 2012, Petraeus advocated for backing the al-Nusra Front against ISIS in Syria.

“We should under no circumstances try to use or coopt Nusra, an Al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, as an organization against ISIS,” Petraeus said in 2015. “But some individual fighters, and perhaps some elements, within Nusra today have undoubtedly joined for opportunistic rather than ideological reasons: they saw Nusra as a strong horse, and they haven’t seen a credible alternative, as the moderate opposition has yet to be adequately resourced.”

The former CIA chief said that the US should ask if it could “peel off so-called ‘reconcilables’ who would be willing to renounce Nusra and align with the moderate opposition.”

In 2016, Sharaa claimed the al-Nusra Front was cutting ties with al-Qaeda. At the time, he thanked the “commanders of al-Qaeda for having understood the need to break ties.” In 2017, he merged his group with several other Islamist factions to form Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the group that led the offensive that ousted former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.

While Sharaa portrays himself as a moderate today, his government’s forces have been responsible for the massacres of thousands of Alawite and Druze civilians since he took power in December 2024. Despite the violence, Sharaa has been embraced by the Trump administration. Sharaa met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later on Monday, where he was expected to push for permanent US sanctions relief.

3 People Shot at Dallas ICE Facility; Shooter and Two Detainees are Dead

(Headline USA) Three people have been shot at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas and the shooter is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the agency’s director said.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons confirmed the shooting during an interview on CNN on Wednesday.

“It could be employees, it could be civilians that were visiting the facility, it could be detainees,” Lyons said of those who were shot. “At this point, we’re still working through that.”

The assailant also killed two detainees and critically wounded another before taking his own life.

Parkland Hospital has received two patients from the incident at the ICE facility, hospital spokesperson April Foran said by telephone. She did not have any details about their conditions.

Officers responded to a call to assist an officer on North Stemmons Freeway around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday and the preliminary investigation determined that a person opened fire at a government building from an adjacent building, Maner said. The investigation is ongoing and a briefing was expected later in the day.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said details were still emerging, but the agency was confirming there were “multiple injuries and fatalities” at the field office. Noem said the motive remained unclear, but noted there has been an uptick in targeting of ICE agents.

Dozens of emergency vehicles were seen along a highway near the facility.

The ICE facility is along Interstate 35 East, just southwest of Dallas Love Field, a large commercial airport serving the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and just blocks from hotels catering to airport travelers.

Traffic cameras near the scene showed six lanes of a normally busy freeway empty, with cars and semitrailers ground to a halt on an interstate exit.

ICE and Homeland Security didn’t immediately provide additional details.

The Dallas Fire-Rescue Department was dispatched at 6:41 a.m. after a call reporting a shooting at or near the immigration office, department spokesperson Jason L. Evans said in an email. Evans said he didn’t have any confirmed details he could share, calling it an active and ongoing incident.

A July 4 attack at a Texas immigration detention center injured a police officer, who was shot in the neck. Attackers dressed in black military-style clothing opened fire outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, southwest of Dallas, federal prosecutors said. At least 11 people have been charged in connection with the attack.

A man with an assault rifle fired dozens of rounds at federal agents as they were leaving a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen on July 7. The man, identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, injured a police officer who responded to the scene before authorities shot and killed him. Police later found other weaponry, ammunition and backpacks inside his car.

(Dave DeCamp, Antiwar.com) President Trump claimed on Tuesday that Ukraine could retake all of the territory Russian forces have captured since the February 2022 invasion and may be able to “go further,” suggesting he’s willing to back the idea of a Ukrainian invasion of Russia.

“After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” the president said in a long post on Truth Social.

“With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option. Why not? Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win,” the president added.

Trump said that Russia looked like a “paper tiger” and that Ukraine was “getting better.” His comments reflect the opinion of his special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, who recently claimed the US could “kick Russia’s ass” and insisted Ukraine could win the war despite Russia’s continued gains in eastern Ukraine and its clear manpower advantage.

Trump said in his post that Ukraine could “be able to take back their Country in its original form and, who knows, maybe even go further than that!” The president also claimed that Russia and Putin were in “big” economic trouble, though there’s no sign that threats of new US sanctions or tariffs will have any impact on the war.

“In any event, I wish both Countries well. We will continue to supply weapons to NATO for NATO to do what they want with them. Good luck to all!” the president said at the conclusion of his post.

Trump’s comment that the US will continue to supply “weapons to NATO” refers to the new initiative under which US allies are providing the funds for US weapons that will be shipped to Ukraine. Reutersreported last week that the Trump administration approved the first weapons packages that will be drawn from US military stockpiles under the initiative, known as the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL).

Trump has justified his continued support for the proxy war, which he pledged to end while on the campaign, by pointing to the fact that NATO countries are now funding US weapons shipments. But the US recently approved a cruise missile deal for Ukraine that will be partially funded by the US, and the Trump administration has continued arms shipments that were previously approved by President Biden.

ABC Affiliates Keep Kimmel Suspended as Show Returns to Air

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) The parent companies of dozens of local ABC affiliates said they will not air Jimmy Kimmel Live!, directly rebuffing Disney’s decision to lift Kimmel’s suspension following his tone-deaf comments about Charlie Kirk’s murder. 

Nexstar and Sinclair, which own a quarter of ABC affiliates nationwide, issued separate statements explaining they are still evaluating a potential return of the late-night show, but demanded assurances for respectful content first. 

Nexstar said Tuesday it stood by its initial decision to preempt the show following Kimmel’s “ill-timed and insensitive” remark. 

“We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve,” the company said. 

Similarly, Sinclair on Monday said that the show would continue to be preempted with new programming, adding that discussions with ABC “are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return.” 

Both companies pulled the program after Kimmel drew widespread condemnation on Sept. 15 after smearing what he called the “MAGA gang” and claiming they were “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.” 

Kimmel’s troubling comments, captured first by the Media Research Center, came as the country mourned Charlie Kirk’s Sept. 10 murder by Tyler Robinson during a speech at Utah Valley University.

Disney quickly pulled the show nationwide after Sinclair and Nexstar refused to air it. The company said Monday it acted “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.” 

Disney added, “It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Google Makes Free Speech Pledge, Years After Censoring Conservatives

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Tech giant Google announced on Tuesday that it would walk back censorship policies in response to congressional investigations, years after using its influence to suppress Americans’ speech it deemed problematic. 

The company outlined the purported pledges in a letter to the House Judiciary Committee, which has for years probed Big Tech censorship.  

Google claimed that much of its prior censorship practice was the result of government pressure from the Biden administration. 

Google described the pressure campaign as “unacceptable and wrong” and vowed to halt third-party “fact-checkers” while restoring YouTube accounts previously banned for violating so-called misinformation rules. 

The move was striking given Google’s reputation as one of the most censorship-prone tech giants, long accused of suppressing Americans’ speech on YouTube and Google Search. 

Fox News first reported on Google’s announced changes, while the Media Research Center, a conservative media watchdog, has documented numerous instances of Google censorship in its CensorTrack database. 

Among the targeted content were scientific discussions on COVID-19, stories by self-identifying transgender individuals rejecting transgender ideology, pro-life content and content supporting former President Donald Trump. 

In a report recounting the censorship, the MRC wrote that it “found 41 examples of Google engaging in election interference from 2008 to early 2024.” 

It added, “These included disabling then-presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard’s Google ads account and burying the campaign websites of GOP Senate candidates in competitive races in 2022.” 

The censorship reportedly extended through the 2024 presidential election and even into the 2025 confirmation hearings of President Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees.

Most recently, YouTube censored Headline USA’s exclusively obtained video of last month’s gruesome Charlotte train stabbing, in which a homeless man slaughtered a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee.

MRC also highlighted how Google repeatedly favored left-leaning outlets in Google News and search results. 

“Google has finally entered a 12-step program to address its TDS. It has been the last holdout among Big Tech companies, but admitting it has a problem is a start,” Dan Schneider, vice president of Free Speech America at MRC, wrote on X.

Indians Score Big Win in New U.S. Green Card System

(José Niño, Headline USA) Indian green card applicants are set to catch a break this October. The U.S. government is updating its system so people from India waiting for permanent residency can move ahead much sooner than usual, according to a report by The Hindustan Times. 

Thanks to the October visa bulletin recently released by the U.S. Department of State, the application process for both family and work-based green cards will be streamlined, and thousands of Indian families and professionals now have a better chance of getting their approvals started faster.

The Visa Bulletin is a monthly publication issued by the U.S. State Department that serves as a crucial scheduling and availability guide for immigrants seeking green cards (permanent residence) in the United States. It functions as an official “waiting list” document that determines when applicants can advance to the final stages of their immigration process.

The biggest boost is for investors: the EB-5 green card category for India just jumped forward by nearly 15 months. According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the EB-5 immigrant investor program grants green cards to qualifying investors. 

For India, the Final Action Date has advanced to Feb. 1, 2021, from November Nov. 15, 2018, as The Hindustan Times reported.

That means those who applied toward may finally move to the next step much sooner. Other work-based categories also show smaller but still helpful progress.

There’s good news for Indian families as well. The F2A category, which is for spouses and kids of permanent residents, moved up by 17 months from Sept. 1, 2022 to Feb. 1, 2024.. This means applicants who filed before that cut-off can now expect their green cards to move along in a more expedited manner per The Hindustan Times report.

Each year there are limits to how many visas can be granted—226,000 for families and at least 140,000 for employment-based categories. As the State Department noted, here’s also a cap for each country to keep things balanced, so no country takes up too many spots.

“The fiscal year 2026 limit for family-sponsored preference immigrants determined in accordance with Section 201 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) is 226,000. The worldwide level for annual employment-based preference immigrants is at least 140,000. Section 202 prescribes that the per-country limit for preference immigrants is set at 7% of the total annual family-sponsored and employment-based preference limits, i.e., 25,620. The dependent area limit is set at 2%, or 7,320,” the State Department’s visa bulletin highlighted.

Everyone in a family or worker’s group gets the same consideration, and the process is based on when each person originally applied.

The green card system divides applications among different categories, such as top professionals, people with advanced degrees, skilled and unskilled workers, special immigrants, and investors. The investor group also sets aside green cards for people investing in rural areas, places with high unemployment, or infrastructure.

This October’s changes offer increased hope to Indian families and applicants who have waited for years for their green card applications to be fully processed. The government’s new policy should mean shorter wait times and an increased chance of obtaining U.S. residency for many Indian nationals.

UN May Have ‘Deliberately’ Sabotaged Trump with Escalator, Teleprompter Blunders

(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) The White House is demanding a formal investigation into whether President Donald Trump’s Tuesday appearance at the United Nations was sabotaged by rogue staffers. 

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made the call after some escalators at the UN abruptly stopped working as Trump and First Lady Melania Trump stepped onto them. Moments later, Trump’s teleprompter failed as he prepared to deliver his remarks. 

“If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator as the President and First Lady were stepping on, they need to be fired and investigated immediately,” Leavitt wrote on X.  

She also posted a screenshot of a Times of London report noting that staffers had joked about cutting the escalator and elevator to force Trump to walk up the stairs. 

The Times reported Sunday—two days before Trump’s speech—that jokes were aimed at highlighting that the UN was running out of cash because “the Trump administration was withholding cash.” 

Just like clockwork, the escalators were shut down seconds after the first lady stepped onto them, causing her to stumble. 

Trump flipped the script, using the botched stunt to ridicule the UN instead.   

“All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that, on the way up, stopped right in the middle,” Trump stated. “If the first lady wasn’t in great shape, she would have fallen. But she’s in great shape. We’re both in good shape. We both stood.” 

The president continued: “These are the two things I got from the United Nations — a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter. Thank you very much. And by the way, it’s working now. Just went on. Thank you.” 

In response to the backlash, Farhan Aziz Haq, deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, insisted the incidents were accidental. 

“Regarding the escalator: The safety mechanism was inadvertently triggered by someone who was ahead of the president on the escalator,” Haq claimed, according to the Times. “The escalator was immediately reset and is in operation.” 

He added, “Regarding the teleprompter, we have no comment since we don’t operate that teleprompter. The interpretation audio was heard when a non-official interpreter pressed the wrong button, which briefly allowed a non-UN interpreter to be heard.”

‘Nightmare Bacteria’ Cases are Increasing in the US

(Headline USA) Infection rates from drug-resistant “nightmare bacteria” rose almost 70% between 2019 and 2023, according to a new report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scientists.

Bacteria that are difficult to treat due to the so-called NDM gene primarily drove the increase, CDC researchers wrote in an article published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Only two antibiotics work against those infections, and the drugs are expensive and must be administered through an IV, researchers said.

Bacteria with the gene were once considered exotic, linked to a small number of patients who received medical care overseas. Though the numbers are still small, the rate of U.S. cases jumped more than fivefold in recent years, the researchers reported.

“The rise of NDMs in the U.S. is a grave danger and very worrisome,” said David Weiss, an Emory University infectious diseases researcher, in an email.

It’s likely many people are unrecognized carriers of the drug-resistant bacteria, which could lead to community spread, the CDC scientists said.

That may play out in doctors’ offices across the country, as infections long considered routine and easy to treat — like urinary tract infections — could become chronic problems, said Dr. Maroya Walters, one of the report’s authors.

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when germs such as bacteria and fungi gain the power to fight off the drugs designed to kill them. The misuse of antibiotics was a big reason for the rise — unfinished or unnecessary prescriptions that didn’t kill the germs made them stronger.

In recent years, the CDC has drawn attention to “nightmare bacteria ” resistant to a wide range of antibiotics. That includes carbapenems, a class of antibiotics considered a last resort for treatment of serious infections.

Researchers drew data from 29 states that do the necessary testing and reporting of carbapenem-resistant bacteria.

They counted 4,341 cases of carbapenem-resistant bacterial infections from those states in 2023, with 1,831 of them the NDM variety. The researchers did not say how many of the infected people died.

The rate of carbapenem-resistant infections rose from just under 2 per 100,000 people in 2019 to more than 3 per 100,000 in 2023 — an increase of 69%. But the rate of NDM cases rose from around 0.25 to about 1.35 — an increase of 460%, the authors said.

A researcher not involved in the study said the increase is probably related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We know that there was a huge surge in antibiotic use during the pandemic, so this likely is reflected in increasing drug resistance,” said Dr. Jason Burnham, a Washington University researcher, in an email.

The CDC’s count is only a partial picture.

Many states are not fully testing and reporting cases. Even in states that do, cases tend to be among hospital patients sick enough to warrant special testing. Many hospitals also aren’t able to do the testing needed to detect certain forms of genetic resistance.

The CDC researchers did not have data from some of the most populous states, including California, Florida, New York and Texas, which means the absolute number of U.S. infections “is definitely underestimated,” Burnham said.

This is not the first study to report a rise. A CDC report published in June noted an increase in NDM cases in New York City between 2019 and 2024.

Minnesota Former State Senator Sentenced to 6 Months for Breaking into Estranged Stepmother’s House

(Headline USA) A former Minnesota state senator who was convicted of burglary for breaking into her estranged stepmother’s house was sentenced Tuesday to six months in jail but will be allowed to serve her time on work release.

Democrat Nicole Mitchell, 51, of Woodbury, faced a minimum sentence of six months on the felony burglary count because her stepmother was at home in the northwestern Minnesota city of Detroit Lakes when she broke in last year.

“I don’t think there is anything I can say or do that will ever be big enough to repair the harm that I’ve done,” Mitchell told the court.

Becker County District Judge Michael Fritz agreed to let Mitchell serve her 180-day sentence on work release in Ramsey County, where she lives. Her attorneys said the former broadcast and military meteorologist recently got a job working at a fast-food restaurant.

The judge ordered Mitchell to report for her sentence by Oct. 8. Minnesota defendants typically serve two-thirds of their sentence in custody and one-third on supervised release, so she could be free in four months. The judge stayed a 21-month prison sentence on the condition that she abides by the terms of her probation.

The prosecutor, Becker County Attorney Brian McDonald objected to what he called :preferential treatment” by letting her serve her sentence outside Becker County. He also criticized her for a lack of accountability and refusing to resign.

Mitchell didn’t resign her Senate seat until July 25, one week after a jury convicted her of first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools.

The first-term senator was dressed all in black and had a flashlight covered with a black sock when she was arrested in the basement of her stepmother Carol Mitchell’s home in the early hours of April 22, 2024. Body camera video showed her telling police, “Clearly, I’m not good at this,” and “I know I did something bad.”

The video, which was played for the jury, also showed her telling police that she went there because her stepmother refused to give her mementos like her late father’s ashes and other belongings. Mitchell’s father and stepmother had been married for 40 years.

But she tried to walk back that statement on the witness stand in July. She claimed to the jury that she had not really intended to take anything — that she just wanted to check on the well-being of her stepmother, who has Alzheimer’s disease.

“My life will never be the same,” Carol Mitchell said in a victim impact statement the prosecutor read to the court Tuesday. “Fear has moved in with me to stay. How could I ever trust Nicole again?”

The defense plans to appeal.

Mitchell represented a Democratic-leaning suburban district in a closely divided Senate, where she often cast the deciding vote, to the consternation of the narrow Republican minority.
