California Gov. Gavin Newsom, in his first appearance since disappearing nearly two weeks ago, claimed he has been incommunicado because his kids complained he’d miss going trick or treating with them for Halloween, according to the San Jose Mercury.

“I had that dinner—a lot of you know this dinner with the family—and the kids literally, they kind of had an intervention, they said, they couldn’t believe that I was going to miss Halloween,” Newsom said the Mercury.
As a result, Newsom was compeled to cancel a trip to the COP26 climate-change conference in Glasgow, which he had been planning for two years.
“I woke up that next morning with something that’s probably familiar to a lot of parents, that knot in your stomach, and I had no damn choice—I had to cancel that trip,” he said.
While the decision significantly reduces Newsom’s carbon footprint due to the amount of jet fuel the trip would have expended, it is unclear whether California taxpayers had to foot the bill for his last-minute cancelation.
Newsom also claimed that he was working on the California budget in his time away from public view.
The explanation was unlikely to assuage some skeptics already inclinded to question Newsom’s complicated relationship with the truth.
Social media has been speculating for several days on Newsom’s whereabouts after he disappeared subsequent to taking a COVID booster shot on Oct. 27.
“Backlash had centered particularly on the booster shot, with speculation about the safety of boosters coming into question with Newsom out of the public eye,” reported USA Today.
The prominent anti-vaccine site group run by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. speculated that Newsom had had severe reaction to the booster that included “debilitating neurological injuries,” according to the Children’s Health Defender.
“However, if it’s true the governor has suffered debilitating neurological injuries following vaccination, it raises grave ethical questions about his seemingly dishonest efforts to conceal his injuries while implementing aggressive policies to force the children and working people of California to endure similar risks,” Kennedy said in a statement.
Newsom’s wife responded to the speculation by calling on detractors to “get a life” in a tweet that she later deleted.
Reports also tied Newsom to the weekend wedding of billionaire oil heiress Ivy Getty.
“The wedding guest, who asked not to be named, said the governor appeared healthy, and showed no signs of illness,” said the San Francisco Examiner. “He and the first partner sat next to San Francisco Mayor London Breed at the 500-person wedding, the guest said.”
