(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) A GOP Senate candidate in Ohio called for reparations for the descendants of white Union Soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
Bernie Moreno made the statement in a speech announcing his intent to run against Sherrod Brown in the 2024 Ohio Senate race, the Daily Caller reported.
“You know, they talk about reparations,” Moreno said in his speech. “Where are the reparations for the people in the North who died to save the lives of black people?”
Moreno continued, arguing that white soldiers died to save black slaves, which never happened in human history and defending the country against allegations of racism.
In his speech, Moreno also spoke highly of the founding fathers.
“We stand on the shoulders of giants, don’t we?” Moreno asked, “We stand on the shoulders of people like John Adams and James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and George Washington. This group of people that took on the largest empire in history and said ‘no we will not stand for this.’ And we won.”
After the speech, spokesman for the campaign Andrew Surabian released a statement adding more context to Moreno’s comments.
“Bernie was right when he said political correctness is killing our country, and the crocodile tears from the Left expose the Democrat hypocrisy he was referring to in the clip,” Surabian said. “However, it’s unsurprising that the liberal media missed his point, since they’ve been complicit with the identity politics charade for years.”
Moreno emigrated from the Columbia to the United States when he was five-years-old.
He is hoping to run against Brown, the Democrat incumbent for the seat. He did not directly address the effort for reparations for the decedents of slaves.
Moreno attempted a run for the state’s other Senate seat in 2022, but dropped out of the race after a meeting with former President Donald Trump.
J.D. Vance, another MAGA star, won the seat in the race against Democrat Tim Ryan.
