Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the chairman of the Democrat-controlled Jan. 6 Committee, said this weekend he is afraid that another Capitol riot could happen if Democrats aren’t able to thoroughly complete their investigation into the event.
“Unless we get it right, given the attitude of what’s occurring in this country now, it could happen again,” Thompson told CNN on Sunday. “When I see people legitimizing storming the Capitol and the activities around it, I’m very concerned. I’m concerned to the point that sometimes people feel they can break the law if they are dissatisfied.”
He claimed the Jan. 6 Capitol riot created a “mindset … that is saying if my candidate loses, then I can tear the place up simply because my candidate did not win.”
Thompson’s comments follow a series of articles published by leftist news outlet meant to stoke outrage about the Capitol riot ahead of its anniversary later this week. The New York Times editorial board published an editorial claiming “Every Day is Jan. 6 Now.”

“The Republic faces an existential threat from a movement that is openly contemptuous of democracy and has shown that it is willing to use violence to achieve its ends,” the Times wrote. “No self-governing society can survive such a threat by denying that it exists. Rather, survival depends on looking back and forward at the same time.”
CNN also announced it will host a special program dedicated to the riot’s anniversary called “Live from the Capitol.”
