(Headline USA) President Joe Biden pushed a gun control initiative on Thursday, which he argued is necessary to combat rising violent crime in cities across the country, and declared that “no amendment is absolute.”
One of the policies Biden proposed is stricter background checks for firearm sales.
“Making sure that people who are not allowed to have a gun, don’t get the gun in the first place,” he said. “This doesn’t violate anybody’s Second Amendment right. There’s no violation of the Second Amendment right to talk like there’s no amendment that’s absolute.”

He then went on to claim that the 2nd Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms, has been restricted before.
“Remember, when the amendment was passed, they didn’t say anybody can own a gun, any kind of gun, or any kind of weapon,” he said. “You couldn’t buy a cannon when this amendment was passed, and so nobody with the money should be able to buy certain assault weapons, but that’s another issue.”

Biden’s false claim about cannons is one he has made several times before. Last June, it even earned Four Pinocchios from the Washington Post.
“We have no idea where he conjured up this notion about a ban on cannon ownership in the early days of the Republic, but he needs to stop making this claim,” Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler wrote at the time.
