Ashli Babbitt’s Mom Meets w/ House Speaker McCarthy

(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) Micki Witthoeft, mother of Jan. 6 victim Ashli Babbitt, met Friday with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Witthoeft did not elaborate on her agenda for the meeting, but did tell reporters that she requested it.

According to CBS, Witthoeft is the leader of a series of daily protests outside of the D.C. jail since August 1, 2022, with thousands of people logging into the live feed every evening.

Several of the protests brought counter protestors, leading to a police presence of an estimated 12 to 20 officers to deescalate.

This is not the first government official Witthoeft has met with. Earlier this month, she spoke with a senior staff aide to McCarthy, as well as House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky.

The internal investigation into the death of Ashli Babbit by the U.S. Capitol Police determined that the officer who killed her acted lawfully, and “potentially saved members and staff from serious injury and possibly death” but provided no direct evidence to support this claim.

Capitol Police did not interview Officer Mike Byrd, who killed Babbitt, before he was cleared of wrongdoing. Reports by attorney Terry Roberts, who is representing the Babbit family, indicate that the file on the investigation is “skimpy.”

“He didn’t provide any statement to [criminal] investigators, and they didn’t push him to make a statement,” Roberts said.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department made it clear that Officer Byrd did not give any statement while under investigation.

“MPD did not formally interview Lt. Byrd. … He didn’t give a statement while under the U.S. Attorney’s Office investigation,” D.C. MPD communications director Kristen Metzger said.

There are also several questions around whether or not Babbitt was provided medical care that could have saved her.

Witthoeft was recently arrested in a march commemorating her daughter’s life, allegedly because the protestors were blocking traffic.
