(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., has broken his silence regarding the controversy surrounding Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s health and the strong calls for his immediate removal.
In a recent interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Rounds, who had a direct conversation with McConnell prior to the interview, sought to reassure the public about the senator’s well-being despite disturbing videos showing otherwise.
“Mitch is sharp and shrewd,” Rounds claimed, conveying his support for McConnell’s ability to lead. “He understands what needs to be done.”
The senator’s comments come less than a week after McConnell experienced a 30-second freeze when asked about his intention to run for re-election in 2026. This unsettling incident, the second in nature, was caught on video and rapidly circulated on social media.
When questioned about the lack of transparency concerning the GOP leader’s fragile health, Rounds declined to provide specific details, stating, “I’ll leave it up to him as to how he wants to discuss that with the American public.”

Some rank-and-file Senate Republicans contemplated holding a “special” meeting to discuss McConnell’s future, Politico reported on Thursday.
Rounds expressed unwavering support for McConnell’s ongoing leadership, dismissing any suggestions that McConnell should step down. “There are a lot of folks that would like to see him go because he’s a capable leader,” he added referring to the increasing calls suggesting that McConnell is too old to lead the party in the Senate.
Prominent conservative figures, concerned about the age of the GOP leader, have called for McConnell to step down and pass on the leadership role to someone else. Collin Rugg, co-founder of Trending Politics, stated, “America is quickly becoming a country controlled by power hungry grandparents who refuse to give up their power.”
Most recently, Nikki Haley, a Republican presidential candidate for 2024, has demanded cognitive tests for politicians. She remarked, “What I will say is, right now, the Senate is the most privileged nursing home in the country. Mitch McConnell has done some great things and he deserves credit. But you have to know when to leave.”
