(Mark Pellin, Headline USA) Donald Trump’s commanding lead in the GOP’s presidential primary contributed to growing concerns that additional charges filed Thursday in the Trump classified document case were conveniently timed as a distraction to myriad allegations of corruption unfolding daily and besieging the Biden administration.
The Justice Department and Special Counsel Jack Smith indicted Trump with one additional Espionage Act charge, stemming from his alleged willful retention of national defense information, and two additional counts of obstruction for allegedly attempting to delete surveillance footage at Mar-a-Lago.
Additionally, the head of maintenance for Trump’s Florida home, Carlos de Oliveira, was charged with lying to investigators as part of the alleged cover-up, according to The Hill. Smith had also previously charged the former president’s aide, Walt Nauta. Both have pleaded not guilty.
The new charges against Trump piled on the 37-count indictment he was already facing.
“This is prosecutorial misconduct used at a level never seen before,” Trump told Fox News Digital on Thursday. “If I weren’t leading Biden by a lot in numerous polls, and wasn’t going to be the Republican nominee, it wouldn’t be happening. It wouldn’t be happening.”
Arguing that “our country is suffering from DOJ abuse,” Trump said, “But I am way up as a Republican and way up in the general election and this is what you get.”
The timing of the latest charges, particularly relating to alleged obstruction for trying to delete Mar-a-Lago surveillance footage, raised red flags for renowned journalist Julie Kelly.
“DOJ admits it has NINE MONTHS of security footage from inside Mar-a-Lago,” Kelly tweeted. “Defense attys told Judge Cannon last week the total footage equates to THEEE YEARS of video bc multiple cameras. DOJ and Jack Smith are corrupt beyond repair.”
And the question is—why did they need all that video? DOJ instructed Trump’s team to only look at footage from May 24 to June 3. Judge Cannon called BS on that and said they should have access to all the footage.
All of this to see who moved Trump’s boxes. What a disgrace.

Conservative commentator and attorney Mark Levine also noted the timing of the latest charges and put the persecution of Trump in perspective.
“Hillary Clinton deleted thousands of emails that were subpoenaed, and she was not charged with a damn thing,” Levine wrote. “So, Smith piles on even more with Trump. What is it now, 40 counts in the documents case?”
In 250 years, no former president has ever been indicted, not even one count. Now, Democrats and their hack prosecutors have thrown open the door. Every imaginable so-called crime that can be thought of is being used to bring charges.

“Trying to distract from hunters legal dilemma,” tweeted one commentator after the DOJ’s announcement, while another accused that “Timing is everything for the corrupt Biden Family!”
