(Ezekiel Loseke, Headline USA) Brock Purdy, the biggest underdog in the NFL, says his identity is entirely formed by Jesus Christ.
Purdy was taken with the last pick of the 2022 draft by the San Francisco 49ers, earning him the title of “Mr. Irrelevant”. As the title suggests, players taken at that position are not expected to start, and sometimes don’t even make the final roster the year they are drafted.
Purdy was no different than the other Mr. Irrelevants on paper, as he began this season as a third-string quarterback. However, after both quarterbacks ahead of Purdy were injured, he started his first game in week 13 against the Miami Dolphins. He has since gone undefeated in his first eight games, which includes two playoff victories, according to NFL.com.
Purdy has led his team to the NFC Championship, is only a single game away from playing in the Super Bowl and was named one of the three finalists for offensive rookie of the year, according to Yahoo!
Purdy credits his Christian faith for giving him confidence and poise, according to CBN.
Purdy admits that at one point, he elevated football above his relationship with God, but he reports his identity is now entirely in Jesus.
“I continue to lean on Him,” he said. “The next day [after refocusing his life on Christ] I didn’t go out and throw for 500 yards and was this awesome quarterback, but it was just this peace that I had with Him knowing that, ‘Hey, no matter what, I’m going to face moving forward during college football, God and Jesus are going to be my identity,” he continued.
“Whatever I face, I won’t be shaken from it.’ I’ve got a great foundation in Him.”
Purdy, in a video posted on Twitter, said his rock through his trials has been Jesus.
“The bottom line, my identity is in Jesus,” he said. “I just want to witness and defend the Christian faith the best as I can moving forward.”
