(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Former Vice President Mike Pence found himself amidst a crowd of Trump supporters in Londonderry, New Hampshire, during a campaign event where he faced heckling and intense criticism.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, as Pence’s visit to the town brought him face-to-face with some disgruntled members of his own party, reported NBC News on Saturday.
“Why did you sell out the people?” one passionate heckler shouted at Pence, expressing the sentiment of several Trump supporters present at the event.
In response, a seemingly arrogant Pence appeared to retort, “I upheld the Constitution. Read it!”
However, the heckling didn’t stop there. As Pence made his way out of his vehicle, a chorus of angry voices branded him as a “sellout” and “traitor,” further challenging his actions during his tenure as Trump’s vice president.
A second heckler asked Pence, “Why didn’t you uphold the Constitution?”
Despite the hostile reception, Pence addressed the crowd, acknowledging the passion within the movement. “I know the people in this movement, whether they support me or not, are the best people in this country,” he stated, attempting to strike a conciliatory tone.
Pence, who is running for the Republican nomination for president in 2024, has attempted not to anger the Trump base within the GOP.
Pence’s heckling comes days after he faced criticism over statements made against Trump ahead of the Biden-led DOJ’s indictments against the former president.
“Today’s indictment serves as an important reminder: anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States,” Trump claimed on a statement on Monday.
Trump, who is also running on the Republican ticket, responded to Pence’s statements in anger, accusing him of going to the “Dark Side.” Calling Pence “delusional,” Trump further said, “I never told a newly emboldened (not based on his 2% poll numbers!) Pence to put me above the Constitution, or that Mike was ‘too honest.’”
