Ex-GOP Rep. Mike Rogers Expected to Run for U.S. Senate in Michigan

(Headline USA) Former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican who served in the U.S. House for seven terms and chaired its intelligence committee, is expected to soon announce a bid for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Rogers would become the first prominent Republican in the state to announce a campaign more than eight months after longtime Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow announced that she would retire next year after her fourth term. The people familiar with the matter spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity ahead of an official announcement expected in the coming days.

His announcement could immediately make the race one of the most competitive in the country in 2024, when Republicans are looking to take control of the chamber from Democrats, who hold a slim 51-49 majority.

A bid also could be a boost for Michigan Republicans. The party has been in turmoil in recent years and has struggled to win statewide races. Democrats won races for governor, attorney general and secretary of state in last year’s midterms and clinched control of both state legislative chambers.

Democrat U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who announced in February she is seeking the Senate seat, has secured a number of notable endorsements and was able to raise nearly $6 million in the first four months of her campaign. Other Democrats also have joined the race, including actor Hill Harper.

Rogers, who made a name for himself during his time in Congress as a moderate Republican, is hoping that his over two decades in Michigan politics can help him become the first Republican to win a Senate race in the battleground state since 1994.

A retired Marine and former FBI agent, Rogers served eight years in the Michigan state Senate before representing mid-Michigan in Congress from 2001 to 2015. He was endorsed by the FBI Agents Association in 2017 to become the next FBI director before President Donald Trump chose Christopher Wray.

The 60-year-old Rogers had initially denied rumors he planned to run for Senate following Stabenow’s announcement and had indicated that he planned to run for president. His plans changed over the past several months as the Republican White House field grew crowded.

Defending the Michigan seat could prove crucial for Democrats in their effort to maintain the Senate, where the party faces tough headwinds as they defend seats in Republican-leaning states from West Virginia to Montana and Ohio.

Republicans have taken just one of Michigan’s last 15 Senate races, but the margin of victory for Democrats has shrunk every election since Democrat Sen. Carl Levin won reelection in 2008 by 29 percentage points. Democrat Sen. Gary Peters won reelection over GOP challenger John James by less than 2 percentage points in 2020, the closest race in over two decades.

Several other Michigan Republican candidates have announced campaigns for the seat, including state Board of Education member Nikki Snyder.

U.S. Gov’t Trying to Halt Ga. Company’s Planned Expedition to Titanic

(Headline USA) The U.S. government is trying to stop a planned expedition to recover items of historical interest from the sunken Titanic, citing a federal law and an international agreement that treat the shipwreck as a hallowed gravesite.

The expedition is being organized by RMS Titanic Inc., the Georgia-based firm that owns the salvage rights to the world’s most famous shipwreck. The company exhibits artifacts that have been recovered from the wreck site at the bottom of the North Atlantic, from silverware to a piece of the Titanic’s hull.

The government’s challenge comes more than two months after the Titan submersible imploded near the sunken ocean liner, killing five people. But this legal fight has nothing to do with the June tragedy, which involved a different company and an unconventionally designed vessel.

The battle in the U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Virginia, which oversees Titanic salvage matters, hinges instead on federal law and a pact with Great Britain to treat the sunken Titanic as a memorial to the more than 1,500 people who died. The ship hit an iceberg and sank in 1912.

The U.S. argues that entering the Titanic’s severed hull — or physically altering or disturbing the wreck — is regulated by federal law and its agreement with Britain. Among the government’s concerns is the possible disturbance of artifacts and any human remains that may still exist.

“RMST is not free to disregard this validly enacted federal law, yet that is its stated intent,” U.S. lawyers argued in court documents filed Friday. They added that the shipwreck “will be deprived of the protections Congress granted it.”

RMST’s expedition is tentatively planned for May 2024, according to a report it filed with the court in June.

The company said it plans to take images of the entire wreck. That includes “inside the wreck where deterioration has opened chasms sufficient to permit a remotely operated vehicle to penetrate the hull without interfering with the current structure.”

RMST said it would recover artifacts from the debris field and “may recover free-standing objects inside the wreck.” Those could include “objects from inside the Marconi room, but only if such objects are not affixed to the wreck itself.”

The Marconi room holds the ship’s radio — a Marconi wireless telegraph machine — which broadcast the Titanic’s increasingly frantic distress signals after the ocean liner hit an iceberg. The messages in Morse code were picked up by other ships and onshore receiving stations, helping to save the lives of about 700 people who fled in life boats. There had been 2,208 passengers and crew on the Titanic’s maiden voyage, from Southampton, England, to New York.

“At this time, the company does not intend to cut into the wreck or detach any part of the wreck,” RMST stated.

The company said it would “work collaboratively” with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. agency that represents the public’s interest in the wreck. But RMST said it does not intend to seek a permit.

U.S. government lawyers said the firm can’t proceed without one, arguing that RMST needs approval from the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, who oversees NOAA.

The company has not filed a response in court, but it previously challenged the constitutionality of U.S. efforts to “infringe” on its salvage rights to a wreck in international waters. The firm has argued that only the court in Norfolk has jurisdiction, and points to centuries of precedent in maritime law.

In 2020, the U.S. government and RMST engaged in a nearly identical legal battle over a proposed expedition that could have cut into the wreck. But the proceedings were cut short by the coronavirus pandemic and never fully played out.

The company’s plan then was to retrieve the radio, which sits in a deck house near the grand staircase. An uncrewed submersible was to slip through a skylight or cut the heavily corroded roof. A “suction dredge” would remove loose silt, while manipulator arms could cut electrical cords.

The company said it would exhibit the radio along with stories of the men who tapped out distress calls “until seawater was literally lapping at their feet.”

In May 2020, U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith gave RMST permission, writing that the radio is historically and culturally important and could soon be lost to decay. Smith wrote that recovering the telegraph would “contribute to the legacy left by the indelible loss of the Titanic, those who survived, and those who gave their lives in the sinking.”

A few weeks later, the U.S. government filed an official legal challenge against the 2020 expedition, which never happened. The firm indefinitely delayed its plans in early 2021 because of complications wrought by the pandemic.

NYC Now Allows Muslim Calls to Prayer without Permit

(Headline USA) The same far-left Democrats who were punishing people for trying to attend church during the pandemic have now awarded special privileges to Muslims.

The Muslim call to prayer will ring out more freely in New York City under guidelines announced Tuesday by Mayor Eric Adams, which he said should foster a spirit of inclusivity.

Under the new rules, Adams said, mosques will not need a special permit to publicly broadcast the Islamic call to prayer, or adhan, on Fridays and at sundown during the holy month of Ramadan. Friday is the traditional Islamic holy day, and Muslims break their fast at sunset during Ramadan.

Adams’s embrace of mixing religion and politics has drawn criticism over its potential policy implications, no less when he is amplifying Sharia law into a growing Muslim community. The far-leftist mayor, a Democrat, enjoys close relationships with faith leaders from various traditions and has promoted the role of religion in public life.

He has at times alarmed civil libertarians by saying he doesn’t believe in the separation of church and state.

“State is the body. Church is the heart,” Adams said at an interfaith breakfast earlier this year. “You take the heart out of the body, the body dies.”

A spokesperson for the mayor said at the time that Adams merely meant that faith guides his actions.

The police department’s community affairs bureau will work with mosques to communicate the new guidelines and ensure that devices used to broadcast the adhan are set to appropriate decibel levels, Adams said.

“For too long, there has been a feeling that our communities were not allowed to amplify their calls to prayer,” Adams said. “Today, we are cutting red tape and saying clearly that mosques and houses of worship are free to amplify their call to prayer on Fridays and during Ramadan without a permit necessary.”

Flanked by Muslim leaders at a City Hall news conference, Adams said Muslim New Yorkers “will not live in the shadows of the American dream while I am the mayor of the city of New York.”

The adhan is a familiar sound in majority-Muslim countries but is heard less frequently in the United States.

Officials in Minneapolis made news last year when they moved to allow mosques to broadcast the adhan publicly.

The adhan declares that God is great and proclaims the Prophet Muhammad as his messenger. It exhorts men — women are not required — to go to the closest mosque five times a day for prayer, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Somaia Ferozi, principal of the Ideal Islamic School in Queens, said New York City’s new rules send a positive message to her students.

“Our children are reminded of who they are when they hear the adhan,” said Ferozi, who attended Adams’ news conference. “Having that echo in a New York City neighborhood will make them feel part of a community that acknowledges them.”

Biden Admin Sending Another $250M in Weapons to Ukraine Thanks to Pentagon Blunder

(Headline USA) The Biden regime was quick to pounce on $250 million in available funds and ship it to Ukraine, instead of using it to help U.S. families struggling to make ends meet. The administration announced Tuesday it will send an additional $250 million in weapons and ammunition to Ukraine as part of its ongoing proxy war with Russia.

The additional largesse was drawn from a stash of loot that became available when the Pentagon overvalued equipment it had already sent, which freed up an additional $6.2 billion in funding. The U.S. would have otherwise already run out of funding for the year to provide additional stockpile equipment to Ukraine.

The weapons will be drawn from existing U.S. stockpiles and will include mine-clearing equipment, artillery and rocket rounds, ambulances and medical gear, among other items and spare parts, according to the State Department.

“The package will help Ukrainian forces on the battlefield and support its air defenses as Russia continues to launch brutal, brutal strikes against the people of Ukraine, including attacks this past week,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday.

The State Department said the package contained AIM-9M missiles for air defense, High Mobility Artillery Rocket System munitions, 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition and more than 3 million rounds of small arms ammunition.

Ukraine has already received more than $43 billion from the U.S. since Russia invaded last year. Those funds have provided weapons systems like howitzers and millions of rounds of ammunition. Due to the intensity of the war, along with reported allegations of widespread corruption and Biden’s failure to negotiate a peace, much of the ammunition and weaponry has already been used up.

Steve Scalise, Survivor of Deranged ‘Bernie Bro’ Shooting, Faces Another Deadly Threat

(Headline USA) Rep. Steve Scalise, the No. 2-ranking House Republican, said Tuesday he has been diagnosed with a form of blood cancer known as multiple myeloma and is undergoing treatment.

Scalise, 57, said he will continue to serve in the House. He described the cancer as “very treatable” and said it was detected early.

The Louisiana congressman was among several people wounded in 2017 when a deranged leftist admirer of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., fired on Republican lawmakers on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, outside Washington.

Scalise was shot in the hip and endured lengthy hospitalizations, multiple surgeries and painful rehabilitation.

The cancer diagnosis came, Scalise said, after he had not been feeling like himself in the past week. Blood tests showed some irregularities and after additional screening, he said he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

“I have now begun treatment, which will continue for the next several months,” Scalise said in a statement. “I expect to work through this period and intend to return to Washington, continuing my work as Majority Leader and serving the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District.”

Scalise also thanked his medical team and said he was “incredibly grateful we were able to detect this early and that this cancer is treatable.”

“I will tackle this with the same strength and energy as I have tackled past challenges,” Scalise said.

Colleagues in the House and members of Louisiana’s congressional delegation offered Scalise and his family their encouragement in response to the announcement, some recalling his determination following the 2017 shooting.

“The same faith, family support, and internal strength that made Steve such an inspiration to others after he was shot will bring him through this illness and once more inspire us all,” said Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La.

“I spoke with him today and he’s in good spirits, as nothing—not a gunshot and certainly not cancer—will stop him from accomplishing what he sets his mind to,” said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif..

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called the diagnosis “devastating news.”

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the congressman and his family,” Jean-Pierre said. “Clearly, he’s gone through a lot over the past couple of years.”

Indiana Man Gets ‘DUI’ Charge While Driving Kids’ Toy Jeep

(Robert Jonathan, Headline USA) State troopers pulled over a 51-year-old Indiana man who was allegedly out and about while driving a battery-powered toy Jeep.

For John McKee of Vincennes, Ind., the joyride resulted in a felony charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to local media reports.

The nighttime traffic stop on a city street in Vincennes, near the Illinois border, was initiated after a trooper reportedly spotted a Power Wheels Jeep with no lights or reflectors, and as such, it “was difficult to see.”

Under the circumstances, a speeding violation probably could not have resulted in a law enforcement intervention, however, because the toy car maxes out at 5 miles per hour.

That said, the suspect may have aged-out of the appropriate demographic for this product.

The Mattel toy company website implies that the Jeep is meant for “off-road adventures” and provides “driving fun for preschool kids ages 3-7.”

The Jeep also has a 130-pound weight limit.

An owner’s manual apparently also warns against nighttime operation or taking the kids’ conveyance on the road when any cars are present.

During the stop, state cops determined that McKee showed “signs of impairment.”

The Indianapolis Star reported that the driver “failed field sobriety tests, according to a state police news release. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, where officers said he was found to be under the influence of methamphetamines and marijuana.”

He was subsequently arrested for OWI and booked into the Knox County, Ind., jail, Fox 59 Indianapolis reported.

His background also reportedly includes a prior conviction for the same offense.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office website described the charge as “Operating a Vehicle With a Schedule I or II Controlled Substance or its Metabolite in the Body.”

As with all criminal matters, the presumption of innocence applies.

The law on traffic stops when drunk or drugged driving is suspected—and obviously which usually involves regular vehicles—varies from state to state.

In general, an officer with specialized training comes to the scene and usually administers a breathalyzer followed by the standard field-testing process.

If a motorist is then taken into custody on suspicion of DUI or OWI (depending upon the equivalent acronym used in the jurisdiction), a blood draw at a nearby hospital is usually the next step in the investigation

Fans of On Patrol: Live, the popular ride-along, reality show that was the successor to Live PD, have seen cops often pull over various kinds of unconventional vehicles—some of which they aren’t able to definitively define right away—for lights or similar safety infractions.

Sometimes it’s just that, and just a warning follows, unless the interaction suggests that something else is or might be going on, possibly because of odor, behavior, or another reason.

Oregon Residents Now Regret Decriminalizing Hard Drugs

(Headline USA) Oregon voters already want to repeal a law decriminalizing drug use just three years after voting to enact it.

A new poll from Emerson College showed 56% of respondents in the state would rather undo the measure than leave it in place. When asked if they would favor a partial repeal over leaving the policy in place, 64% said yes.

Measure 110 was passed in 2020 by referendum and downgraded the penalty for the use of hard drugs, such as methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine.

As a result, drug abuse and overdoses have skyrocketed across the state, with fentanyl-related overdoses increasing by 210% since 2020, according to police.

Fifty-four percent of respondents claimed the policy has increased homelessness in their communities, while 50% said it decreased safety in their communities.

Overall, 58% of those polled said Oregon is headed in the wrong direction, while 42% said it’s going the right way.

The survey came just weeks after a report detailing how Portland residents were fleeing the city at record rates due to rising crime and homelessness. In fact, Portland lost 3% of its total population between 2020 and 2022, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Rampant crime has driven several businesses out of Portland as well. Walmart announced earlier this year that it would be shutting down all of its Portland locations due to constant theft and drug use in their stores.

“Theft is an issue,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told Breitbart at the time. “It’s higher than what it has historically been.”

He also called out government officials, arguing a “lax approach from prosecutors” would impact “prices and lead to store closures down the line.”

Even leftist singer John Mellencamp, a 1980’s rocker, admitted in a recent song that Portland has become unlivable.

“As I saw through the eyes of Portland one day, / There were so many homeless; they’d all gone astray. / They slept on the corners during the day,” read the lyrics of Mellencamp’s song, “The Eyes of Portland.”

Smoking Gun Emails Show Weiss Colluded w/ DOJ to Evade Oversight

(Headline USA) Special Counsel David Weiss coordinated with Justice Department officials on how to respond to congressional oversight efforts regarding the investigation into Hunter Biden, raising questions about his prior statement that he had “ultimate authority” over the case.

Emails obtained by the Heritage Foundation and shared with The Federalist show Weiss sought advice from the DOJ’s Office of Legislative Affairs and Office of Legal Counsel about how to respond to questions from congressional Republicans.

For example, after Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Ron Johnson, R-Wis., sent a letter to Weiss asking about the Hunter Biden probe, Weiss’s office reached out to the Office of Legislative Affairs for help drafting Weiss’s response.

“I will send this along now to [redacted]. Anything else you’d like me to convey or ask?” assistant U.S. Attorney Shannon Hanson told Weiss in a June 2, 2022 message.

“I don’t think it matters. Does it?” Weiss responded.

When Weiss reached out a few days later asking whether Hanson’s team had crafted his response to Grassley and Johnson, Hanson informed him the OLA was “working on it.” On June 9, the OLA responded to Grassley and Johnson saying Weiss could not comment on an ongoing investigation.

The Heritage Foundation pointed out that Weiss’s constant collaboration with the main DOJ proves “claims of Weiss’s independence were a sham.”

“Garland’s political lobbyists were controlling congressional communications to the Hill, while the Hill thought they were going to be hearing from Weiss himself,” Heritage Oversight Project director Mike Howell said in a statement.

“It’s insane that we needed a judicial order to produce a few documents after months and months of the Department of Justice throwing every roadblock they possibly could, at the taxpayers’ expense of course,” he admonished.

This is not the first time Biden officials have inserted themselves into a political investigation. Last week, it was reported that members of Biden’s White House counsel’s office met with special counsel Jack Smith’s team in the weeks leading up to Smith’s indictment of former President Donald Trump over Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents.

Reports also showed Weiss’s office coordinated with Hunter Biden’s legal team directly regarding the sweetheart plea deal offered to him by the Justice Department. In fact, emails show much of the language used in the plea deal was drafted by Hunter Biden’s lawyers and included verbatim.

Corrupt Judge Chutkan Descended from Marxist Revolutionaries in Jamaica

(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) Judge Tanya S. Chutkan hails from a long line of foreign Marxist revolutionaries, the New York Post reported.

Like Chutkan—who is presiding over the federal lawfare attack targeting former President Donald Trump for challenging the 2020 election outcome—some of her recent ancestors even became controversial figures for attempting to overthrow the political system in their native Jamaica.

Chutkan is the granddaughter of Frank Hill, a Jamaican communist revolutionary. Frank and his brother, Ken, were both jailed by Jamaica’s British governor during World War II due to their subversive political activism.

The brothers were also expelled from the People’s National Party of Jamaica due to their communist views.

In Richard Hart’s Towards Decolonisation: Political, Labour and Economic Developments in Jamaica 1938–1945, Hart noted that the Hills were more interested in action than abstract theorizing.

According to Hart, Ken–Chutkan’s great-uncle–was deeply influential.

“Ken Hill, by far the most influential, was more pragmatic and less concerned with political theory than most members of the left,” Hart wrote in 1999. “He probably began to consider himself a communist both as a result of the influence of his brother Frank and also his observation of the course of world events.”

Her genealogy helps cast new light on Chutkan, whose own political biases both in and out of thoe courtroom have been well documented.

She donated substantially to former President Barack Obama—who wound up elevating her to the federal judgeship in June 2014, after then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid used the “nuclear option” to eliminate filibusters on judicial confirmations.

Among the controversial statements she has made from the bench has has been a robust defense of the violent and lawless race riots in the summer of 2020, following the death of George Floyd.

“People gathered all over the country last year to protest the violent murder by the police of an unarmed man,” Chutkan said in a 2021 hearing, downplaying the actions that led to at least 25 deaths and billions of dollars in property damage, according to the Washington Examiner.

“Some of those protesters became violent,” she continued. “But to compare the actions of people protesting, mostly peacefully, for civil rights, to those of a violent mob seeking to overthrow the lawfully elected government is a false equivalency and ignores a very real danger that the Jan. 6 riot posed to the foundation of our democracy.”

Four people—all Trump-supporting rallygoers—died during the roughly four-hour protest at the U.S. Capitol. Only one of those, Ashli Babbitt, was confirmed to have been a victim of homicide.

While initial estimates on the damage to the Capitol were $1.5 million, lawmakers were able to balloon that to more than $2.7 million after two years.

Chutkan, meanwhile, has continued to dole out disproportionately excessive sentences for the political dissidents involved in the Jan. 6 uprising, perhaps as revenge for the British jailing of her politically subversive grandfather and uncle.

Most recently, in an overtly partisan move, she set the trial date for Trump the day before next year’s Super Tuesday election.

ISIS Helping to Smuggle Illegals across U.S. Border

(Headline USA) The FBI is reportedly searching for dozens of illegal immigrants that were trafficked across the southern border last year by a smuggler with ties to ISIS.

The illegal immigrants came from Uzbekistan and were encountered by Border Patrol agents at an unspecified part of the southern border earlier this year. They were apprehended and immediately claimed asylum, and subjected to a screening against the FBI terror watch list and U.S. criminal databases afterward. There was “no information in any of the intelligence community’s databases that raised any red flags and the people were all released into the U.S. pending a court date,” according to CNN.

However, officials admitted several of the Uzbek nationals have since been placed under investigation for possible criminal threats. At least 15 have been tracked down in the interior of the U.S. and are under FBI watch, the officials added.

It wasn’t until months later that U.S. officials discovered the Uzbek nationals were a part of an underground human smuggling network helping people cross into the U.S. illegally. One of the key members of this network is an individual with connections to the Islam State terrorist group, ISIS.

National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson insisted that the FBI has not identified a specific ISIS plot.

“There was no indication—and remains no indication—that any of the individuals facilitated by this network have a connection to a foreign terrorist organization or are engaged in plotting a terrorist attack in the United States,” Watson said.

But according to CNN, the episode was so alarming that national security officials circulated an urgent classified intelligence report to President Joe Biden’s top Cabinet officials recently.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also tried to downplay the event during a press briefing this week, claiming officials “moved fast and successfully to disrupt” the ISIS-linked network.
