Ohio Teacher Forced to Resign over Christian Beliefs

'No school official can force a teacher to set her religious beliefs aside in order to keep her job...'

(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) An Ohio teacher filed a lawsuit through the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) after being forced to resign from her position when she refused to use the chosen names and pronouns of transgender-identifying students.

Administrators at Jackson Memorial Middle School and Jackson Local School District administrators pushed English teacher Vivian Geraghty to violate her Christian beliefs by compelling her to use pronouns incompatible with their biological sex.

According to the Post Millennial, Geraghty claims that this push to get her to use pronouns is in violation of the first amendment.

“No school official can force a teacher to set her religious beliefs aside in order to keep her job,” said ADF Legal Counsel Logan Spena. “The school tried to force Vivian to recite as true the school’s viewpoint on issues that go to the foundation of morality and human identity, like what makes us male or female, by ordering her to personally participate in the social transition of her students.

“The First Amendment prohibits that abuse of power,” Spena continued. “Jackson Local School District officials nonetheless forced Vivian to resign because she resisted this unconstitutional command and explained that it was her Christian faith that made her unable to participate in her students’ social transition.”

The problem initially arose when the school’s counselor told the faculty and staff to use the new pronouns and names chosen by the students. Geraghty requested a meeting with the principal in an attempt to find a middle ground without affirming the harmful transgender ideology.

The principal and other administrators told Geraghty that she “would be required to put her beliefs aside as a public servant.”

The officials also indicated that seeking a middle ground is tantamount to insubordination and that she must resign immediately for refusing to participate in the social transitions of the two students.

Lawsuits are being filed against teachers refusing to participate in the social transition of their students; Geraghty’s filing is the first example of a teacher being compelled to resign due to her unwillingness.
