(Mark Pellin, Headline USA) After boasting for years of its sanctuary status for illegal immigrants, New York City has found itself so overwhelmed it’s being forced to house 1,000 asylum-seekers in the parking lot of a psychiatric center.
The new emergency relief facility at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens will house adult males and provide services to include meals and medical care, NewsDay reported.
“This center will provide not just a place to stay but also critical services to support these individuals on their journey,” Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol said.
The city is also slated to house an additional 1,000 illegals at an emergency shelter at the old Aqueduct Racetrack, according to The City.
With nearly 60,000 asylum-seekers in the city, and hundreds more arriving daily, the administration of Democrat Mayor Eric Adams has scrambled desperately to keep pace, packing illegal immigrants into everything from a Harlem jail and hotels to cruise ships, while shuttling them into neighboring suburban communities.
Adams announced at a recent news conference that the city had “reached full capacity,” after being left in the lurch by an absence of state or federal help, according to TimCast.
“In the coming days, the city will begin providing 60 days’ notice to adult asylum seekers to find alternative housing paired with intensified casework services to help adult asylum seekers explore other housing options and take the next step in their journey,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.
“Each asylum seeker given notice will have multiple touchpoints with case workers over their 60 days to discuss their options and plan their next steps.”
In the meantime, the Adams administration has begun distributing flyers to illegal border crossers in an apparent attempt to dissuade them from taking advantage of the Big Apple’s sanctuary city status.
The bilingual flyers warn that “housing in NYC is very expensive” and “the cost of food, transportation, and other necessities in NYC is the highest in the United States.”
In that light, the new flyers being distributed to illegals by NYC officials also advise that “there is no guarantee we will be able to provide shelter and services to new arrivals” and encourages border jumpers to “please consider another city as you make your decision about where to settle in the U.S.”
