Matt Walsh Flips Script on ‘Stolen Land’ Narrative, Touts Liberation of Aztecs

'One of the greatest triumphs in the history of western civilization, by one of history’s greatest men... '

(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) In a recent tweet, conservative political activist and filmmaker Matt Walsh praised one of history’s great men, Hernan Cortes, for liberating the Aztec tribe from its brutal and inhumane tribal practices.

“One of the greatest triumphs in the history of western civilization, by one of history’s greatest men,” wrote the investigative journalist, who has made a splash routinely by questioning the left’s most sacred beliefs, one of which is that Cortes is one of the summits of evil that have risen up through history.

As intended, the Daily Wire provocateur’s post elicited a few unhinged leftist takes on social media, Twitchy reported.

One Twitter user, for example, took up the typical leftist position by siding with the native Aztecs, regardless of the barbarism of their practices.

“So one of the greatest triumphs of western history was to whip out an entire civilization??” they wrote.

But a more clear-sighted look at the history clarifies Walsh’s point: that the Spaniards in many ways saved the Aztec peoples from utterly barbaric practices.

In response, another user noted that the Aztecs were extraordinarily barbaric, engaging in large-scale human sacrifice and also cannibalism.

For the Aztecs, mass-scale murder was a religious imperative, necessary in order to stop the world from ending.

This practice led the Aztecs to alienate the neighboring tribes, which sided definitively with Cortes in order to escape the brutality of the empire under which they found themselves.

Many of those tribes were permitted to remain intact by Cortes after he liberated them from the rule of the tyrannical Aztecs.

Still, not to let historical accounts get in the way of their narrative, other left-wing twitter users appealed to genocide, arguing that Cortes and his men engaged in the intentional mass murder of a certain race with the end of extermination in mind.

But in reality Cortes and his men liberated thousands of other natives who were forcibly ruled and killed by the Aztecs.

“He stopped human sacrifice on an entire continent,” another user wrote in response.
