(Joshua Paladino, Headline USA) Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., has raised more than $10 million for her reelection campaign, but only about 2 percent of the donors reside in her home state, the Federalist reported.
Cheney’s campaign, which raised $2.3 million in the first quarter of 2022, has received more money—about $880,000—from donors in northern Virginia than she has from donors in Wyoming—about $780,000. She raised more than $7 million in 2021.
Wyoming residents contributed about 8 percent of total funds to her campaign in dollar terms, Open Secrets reported.
Cheney received the bulk of the donations from out of state, including $760,000 from Californians, $720,000 from Texans, and about $460,000 from Virginians.
“In previous cycles, it was common for Cheney to raise a few hundred thousand dollars in a quarter, mostly from Wyoming residents,” Politico‘s Playbook reported, adding that “with the national attention her race has received, money has poured in from across the country.”
Cheney will face a Trump-endorsed Republican challenger, Harriet Hageman, in the GOP primary on August 16. Hageman has raised about $2 million.
Even some in the Republican Party’s establishment wing have turned on Cheney, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Wyo., who endorsed Hageman.
House Republicans kicked Cheney out of the GOP leadership after she voted to impeach President Donald Trump. The Wyoming Republican Party voted to stop recognizing Cheney as a Republican.
The national Republican Party censured Cheney for trying to stifle “legitimate political discourse.”
Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, helped fundraise for Cheney at venues with vaccine mandates.
If Cheney wins the Republican primary, she will use her power to lobby against Trump.
“I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office,” she said.
