Leftist Media Produces Two Attacks on Catholicism in One Weekend

'The AR15 is a sacred object among Christian Nationalist... '

(Ezekiel Loseke, Headline USA) The leftist media attacked conservative Catholics last weekend, including hit pieces from The Atlantic and The Daily Beast.

The Atlantic article was initially titled “How The Rosary Became an Extremist Symbol,” with the subtitle “The AR15 is a sacred object among Christian Nationalists. Now ‘radical-traditional’ Catholics are bringing a sacrament of their own.”

The subtitle showed how little the reporter knows about Catholicism. The Rosary is not one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. The seven sacraments of the Catholic Church are: baptism, confirmation, reconciliation, the Eucharist, matrimony, holy orders and the anointing of the sick, according to The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Holy Rosary is not a sacrament, but a Marian devotion, per Catholic.com.

The Atlantic should not be expected to be charitable to Catholicism because it has a long history of downplaying violence against Catholic pregnancy centers, as reported by RedState. The downplaying of violence, combined with the slandering of a devotion to The Blessed Virgin as extremism, is, as RedState argued, “raging anti-Catholic bigotry.”

After a sizable public outcry, The Atlantic amended its headline. RedState argued the change was probably intended “to make it look like they didn’t mean what they said.”

Alex Thomas of The Daily Beast launched another, less noticed, attack on Catholicism over the weekend.

Thomas argued that “America First” types are becoming “trad-Caths.” But they don’t actually get the church or Jesus’ teachings.” Thomas’s concern for “trad-caths” understanding of the church’s teachings is contradicted by his open contempt for the Catholic Church.

He unapologetically began his article bragging about writing for a pornographic magazine and having an illicit relationship. Thomas reported once having aspirations of joining the Priesthood. However, he wrote, “My ambitions of Holy Orders evaporated around the same time I soured on celibacy.”

Thomas identifies as one of a group of people born Catholics who frequently “fell out of it by adulthood.”

Despite bemoaning The Church, mocking the sacrament of reconciliation and reporting being “bad at sticking to all the rules,” Thomas reported being annoyed that some conservatives have converted to Catholicism and take the faith seriously.

The “raging anti-Catholic bigotry” of The Atlantic and the hypocritical whining of Thomas show an increase in leftist contempt for conservative Catholics as the kulturkampf continues to rage.

Catholics would do well to remember the words of Christ, “And you will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.”
