(Luis Cornelio, Headline USA) Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has exposed a starling donations scandal involving a high-ranking prosecutor implicated in the Biden administration-led indictment of former President Donald Trump.
The prosecutor in question, Karen E. Gilbert, has been revealed to have made substantial contributions to the Biden 2020 campaign, Obama-affiliated organizations and the Democratic National Committee, according to Fox News. Gilbert’s history included an embarrassing resignation from the DOJ in 2009 after her tenure forced an apology from the DOJ and a $600,000 settlement.
Without delay, Gaetz swiftly took action by sending a scathing letter to Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland, demanding the preservation and disclosure of all records from Special Counsel Smith’s office. The letter blasted the alleged irregularities and seemingly partisan targeting of Trump, who is running for the 2024 presidency, by the Office of Special Counsel.
Suggesting a pattern of partisan influence, Gaetz said, “[I]t is of such concern that the Department of Justice has fielded multiple requests of Congress, from individual member offices and full Committees My office alone fields numerous calls of constituents asking about the Special Counsel, his authorities, and how his office is structured.”
Gaetz also highlighted Gilbert’s alleged misconduct in the letter, adding, “Karen Gilbert, resigned in 2009 from her position as head of the narcotics section of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida after misconduct which DOJ stated it ‘deeply regrets’ and which cost the American taxpayer over $600,000 in a settlement.”
The revelation of Gilbert’s substantial donations to Democratic campaigns and organizations raises questions about the impartiality of the prosecutors involved in the case against Trump’s administration. Gaetz cited these donations as sufficient reasons for issuing the letter Garland. According to Fox News, Gilbert donated $2,000 to the campaigns of Biden and former President Barack Obama.
Moreover, Gaetz expressed concerns about a potential cover-up of prosecutorial misconduct, referring to instances where devices used in the Mueller probe were unlawfully wiped clean. He demanded General Garland ensure compliance with recordkeeping laws and to provide his office with copies of all notices and training provided to Special Counsel Smith’s staff.
“Please take care to comply with all applicable recordkeeping laws,” Gaetz concluded in the letter.
