(Headline USA) Washington, D.C., officials announced this week that the city will enroll illegal immigrant children in the public school system who are being bused in from border states.
Texas and Arizona have bused thousands of illegal aliens to D.C. over the past few months, arguing that Democrat-controlled sanctuary cities should share some of the burden of the border crisis. Mayor Muriel Bowser has twice asked for military aid to handle the influx of migrants, but the Pentagon has denied her requests.
Now, Bowser’s plan is to put school-aged migrants into D.C.’s public schools, Bowser announced on Monday. She didn’t say whether the schools were prepared to handle the increased student population, but argued the city is “ready” to welcome them.
“We are committed to supporting families in the District and are proud to welcome students to DCPS,” a spokesperson for the city’s school district said in a statement.
“We have a process in place to support families who have arrived here under these types of circumstances and will be providing direct enrollment and other DCPS supports.”
Bowser and other Democrat officials have blasted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey for sending illegal immigrants to their cities. Bowser on Monday called the move a “political stunt.”
“We know that these unannounced buses are a politically motivated stunt, one that could very quickly lead to a crisis within our own systems. We struggle with a broken immigration system in our country, and we know that cities alone cannot fix it,” Bowser tweeted.
D.C. homeless shelters for single adults have reached capacity and the city is housing migrant families in hotels. Officials have also started sending migrants to Montgomery County, Maryland, and placing them in a temporary respite center.
