As his final days on the job pass, New York‘s Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo has filed for retirement in the state, Fox News reported.
According to the report, Cuomo will receive the state’s lifetime pension, despite the fact that he will likely be subject to criminal investigations.
Tim Hoefer, CEO of the Empire Center for Public Policy, rebuked Cuomo for filing for his retirement application.
“[I]f you’re wondering, without a felony conviction and several other steps, Cuomo would be eligible for his full pension, at taxpayer expense, for the rest of his life,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that Cuomo has granted clemency to 10 people, including granting full pardons to five.
One of the fully pardoned is convicted cop-killer Jon–Adrian Velazquez, whose sentence will now be wiped away.
Velazquez, 45, has been serving a term of 25 years to life for the murder of the former police officer Albert Ward.
His case made headlines when actor Martin Sheen famously campaigned for his exoneration, despite the fact that several eyewitnesses saw Velazquez commit the murder.
