(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) MSNBC’s Chris Matthews compared the death of Iran’s “beloved leader” Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian general and terrorist, to the deaths of American rock legend Elvis Presley and the United Kingdom’s Princess Diana.

“When some people die, you don’t know what the impact is going to be,” Matthews said during a segment with Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas.

“When Princess Diana died, for example, there was a huge emotional outpouring. Elvis Presley in our culture,” Matthews continued. “It turns out that this general we killed was a beloved hero of the Iranian people to the point where—look at the people, we got pictures up now—these enormous crowds coming out.”

Unlike high-profile terrorists like the recently killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Soleimani was little known or discussed in the American media prior to his death.

“There’s no American emotion in this case,” Matthews said, “but there’s a hell of a lot of emotion on the other side.”

President Donald Trump ordered the killing of Soleimani, a brutal Islamic leader with the blood of hundreds of U.S. soldiers on his hands, after he had flown into Baghdad airport to provide tactical support for Iran-backed militia groups attempting to siege the U.S. Embassy there.

But Democrats immediately blamed Trump for escalating tensions with Iran and leading the U.S. to another “forever war,” as Castro claimed.

“They very much could have anticipated that Iranians would react in this way, both the Iranian public but also that the government would strike back,” Castro told Matthews. “This speaks to a much larger issue, Chris, which is the president has had a very chaotic and erratic foreign policy, especially with respect to Iran.”

Many Iranian-born U.S. residents, however, have been quick to point out that the regime’s mourning for Soleimani is nothing more than a facade.

“In the city of Ahvaz, where large numbers of people turned out to mourn Soleimani, the government has forced students and officials to attend. It provided free transport and ordered shops to shut down,” Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad wrote in The Washington Post.

“According to videos sent to me by people inside the country, the authorities are making little kids write essays praising the fallen commander,” Alinejad added. “First-graders who didn’t know how to write were encouraged to cry for Soleimani.”

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) The Justice Department has nearly concluded its investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s abuse of a private email server, without producing “tangible results,” according to The Washington Post.

U.S. Attorney John Huber has been looking into the scandal since 2017, as well as possible corruption involving the Clinton Foundation. But the case is largely finished, and Huber doesn’t plan to send an official notice to the Justice Department, officials said.

“We didn’t expect much of it, and neither did he,” one person familiar with the matter told the Post. “And as time went on, a lot of people just forgot about it.”

When Huber was first appointed by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, he was told to give the Justice Department “recommendations” that “include whether any matters not currently under investigation warrants the opening of an investigation, whether any matters currently under investigation require further resources or further investigation, and whether any matters would merit the appointment of a Special Counsel.”

But Huber does not plan to pursue the case further, officials said, despite the fact that an independent State Department investigation found negligence on the part of 38 State Department officials spanning 91 instances in which classified information appeared on Clinton’s unsecured server.

Because Clinton withheld some 30,000 email files and used BleachBit software to wipe the server, ignoring a congressional subpoena to preserve the evidence, the agency’s audit was likely based on outbound transfers of its own servers to Clinton’s now-defunct private address, [email protected].

The report found that some of those implicated had “deliberately transmitted” information via Clinton’s personal server. As of yet, no “culpable” officials have been charged because the State Department concluded there was no “persuasive evidence” of widespread mishandling of classified information.

But Republican lawmakers have vowed to continue pursuing this case even if the Justice and State departments drop it.

“Mishandling classified information should be a bipartisan issue that is managed with equal application of the law without regard to power, party, or privilege,” Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“The failure to safeguard classified information by exposing it to unclassified systems without proper authority puts national security at risk,” Grassley said.

(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) Now that the Democratic Party has control over Virginia‘s legislature and governorship, leaders have announced an 11-point “Virginia 2020 Plan,” with the first goal being to pass the long-dead Equal Rights Amendment.
But the ERA, which would eliminate legal distinctions between the two sexes, faces multiple challenges.
The ratification period expired in 1982.
The Justice Department ruled Wednesday that the “ERA Resolution has expired and is no longer pending before the States,” according to a press release from the Alliance Defending Freedom.
“Even if one or more state legislatures were to ratify the 1972 proposal, that action would not complete the ratification of the amendment, and the ERA’s adoption could not be certified,” The Justice Department said in its opinion.
Kristen Waggoner, ADF’s senior vice president of U.S. legal division, agrees with the Justice Department’s opinion and opposes the ERA on its own terms.
“The ERA not only undermines women’s rights and opportunities, it falls far short of the requirements to amend the Constitution,” Waggoner said. “Women deserve to be treated with equality and fairness under the law, but that’s not what the ERA does.”
When the deadline for the ERA expired, 35 of 38 had ratified it. In 2017, Nevada ratified the ERA, and Illinois followed in 2018.
Virginia is expected to follow suit this year.
“It will pass,” Virginia House Speaker-elect Eileen Filler–Corn confidently said.
Five states, Idaho, Kentucky, Nebraska, Tennessee and South Dakota, revoked their support for the ERA decades ago.
So even if Virginia ratifies the ERA and if it were still pending ratification, which it is not, the 38-state threshold for ratification will not be met.
Another growing problem for the ERA is that transgenderism and identity politics threaten the once-solid coalition of pro-ERA forces.
Some feminists in America speak strongly against transgenderism—particularly against the inclusion of so-called transgender women (biological males) among the feminist ranks—while other feminists support the inclusion of transgender individuals into the lesbian, gay and bisexual alliance.

‘This is not a measured response!’

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Shortly after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would impose additional sanctions on Iran in response to the regime’s missile attack, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., condemned the move as an act of “economic warfare.”

Omar has a problem with sanctions against Iran, but not against Israel.

The freshman Democrat has openly advocated for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which has been endorsed by several terrorist organizations. The movement’s goal is to force Israel to make concessions to Palestinians by stifling its economy, boycotting its good and encouraging corporations to divest economic benefits from the country.

But at its core, the BDS movement is an attempt to de-legitimize Israel, which is why the House overwhelmingly condemned it as anti-Semitic late last summer.

The House resolution decries BDS as an attempt to “undermine the possibility for a negotiated solution” by “demanding concessions of one party alone and encouraging the Palestinians to reject negotiations in favor of international pressure.”

Omar, joined by Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Alexandria Ocasio–Cortez, D-N.Y., slammed the resolution as an attempt to stifle “free speech” in Congress.

“I don’t think people fully understood when they signed onto the bill,” Omar said.

Trump announced that the U.S. will use an economic and diplomatic strategy to de-escalate tensions with Iran, but Omar continues to insist that Trump is trying to start a war.

“First he canceled our best shot at avoiding armed conflict: the Iran Nuclear Deal,” she said this week. “Then he announced crippling sanctions to starve the innocent people of Iran.”

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) A well-known television doctor, based in California, is fed up with his congressman’s refusal to address the state’s growing homelessness crisis.

So “Dr. Drew” Pinsky might run for Congress and challenge his sitting representative: House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff.

“I wake up every day and drive through this town and I am morally moved where I feel like I have to do something,” Pinsky, the former host of “Loveline,” told The Hill. “We have people literally dying in our streets.”

The city, county and state governments are “not functioning,” Pinsky added.

But what really motivated him to begin thinking about a serious congressional run was the House impeachment hearings, which revealed just how disinterested California Democrats are in addressing real problems, he explained.

“I was watching all the impeachment proceedings and I was going, ‘Oh my God, our Congress is tied up and we’re dying out here in California. What are these people doing?’”

Pinsky said that if he were to run, it would be to motivate Schiff to start caring about his constituents more.

The medical professional described himself as “very moderate,” and said he changes his political party affiliation often.

“I thought, ‘Oh my God, I have to run for that office at least just to get him to start participating in the governance of this region,’” he said. “Believe me, I don’t want to. I’d have to change my whole life, and I’m not really prepared to do that yet.”

But he’s willing to do just that if that’s what it takes: “The fact that I keep thinking about it tells me how profound the problems are, that I feel obliged to, maybe, turn my life upside down just to get things governed out here.”

When asked how he’d respond to those hesitant to accept another famous name in politics, Pinsky said: “I would say my eyes are rolling, too. I’d rather not be here. Point me in another direction where we can help the citizens of California, please. I’m all ears.”

National Park Quietly Updates Signs Claiming Glaciers Will Be Gone by 2020

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Montana’s Glacier National Park is updating signs throughout the park that claimed its glaciers would be gone by 2020 due to climate change.

The signs were installed more than 10 years ago, according to the park’s spokeswoman, Gina Kurzmen, and they will be replaced by signs that more accurately reflect scientific changes, CNN reported.

The new signs will say: “When they will completely disappear depends on how and when we act. One thing is consistent: the glaciers in the park are shrinking.”

The park has known for several years that the glaciers would not melt by 2020, according to Kurzmen, but the original signs were not replaced because of budgetary restraints.

Roger Roots, an administrative official at Lysander Spooner University, said he’s been calling out the national park’s climate alarmism for years. But instead of listening, the park tried to quietly revise the signs while the visitors centers were closed to the public, Roots said.

Apocalyptic warnings of this nature are common among environmentalists, and they are almost always wrong.

Ten years ago, the United Nations predicted we only had “as little as eight years left to avoid a dangerous global average rise of 2C or more.” This proved false.

Nearly 25 years ago, a group of 1,700 scientists and experts warned that we would suffer massive ecological and societal collapse if countries did nothing to curb overpopulation and pollution.

And in 2009, the head of Canada’s Green Party informed world leaders that a we had only “hours” left if we didn’t stop global warming.

“We have hours to act to avert a slow-motion tsunami that could destroy civilization as we know it,” Elizabeth May, leader of the Greens in Canada, wrote in 2009. “Earth has a long time. Humanity does not. We need to act urgently. We no longer have decades; we have hours. We mark that in Earth Hour on Saturday.”

(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) The Department of Education learned in an investigation that six universities broke the law when they did not report the origin of a combined $1.3 billion in foreign money.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos ordered an initial investigation after learning that Georgetown University and Texas A&M were receiving undisclosed payments from Qatar, a small oil-rich nation that borders Saudi Arabia, the Washington Examiner reported.
“It is already a reporting requirement for schools to report all foreign contributions,” DeVos said, according to the Washington Examiner.
“From my perspective, it’s a simple requirement: Report all foreign money you get,” she said. “We’re going to continue to raise the flag on this, and we think, just given what we’ve seen scratching the surface, there’s a lot there that has gone undetected.”
Now that the investigation has expanded, the DoE investigation found that Cornell, Rutgers, the University of Maryland and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology accepted undisclosed payments from China, Russia and Qatar, Clarion Project reported.
DoE Deputy General Counsel Reed Rubinstein announced his findings in a letter to the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations with a specific emphasis on China’s malign influence.
“The public lacks an accurate or complete picture of China’s overall spending because U.S. colleges and universities routinely fail to report foreign money (nearly 70% of colleges and universities failed to report in this case),” Rubinstein said. “The Chinese money comes with strings that can compromise academic freedom.”
A separate investigation by the Clarion Project revealed that foreign governments have paid $10 billion to American universities since 2012, including $1.5 billion from Qatar alone.
Qatar sent more than $340 million to Northwestern University to create a relationship between university’s journalism school and Al Jazeera, a state-sponsored media outlet that the Clarion Project describes as the “most influential Islamist extremist propaganda outlet in the world.”
Another report found that Iran funneled money to 30 American and Canadian universities through a front organization named the Alavi Foundation.

Enviro Groups Sue Federal Gov't Over Sea Turtles, Despite Huge Population Boom

(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) Three environmental groups sued five branches of the federal government for their failure to name the green sea turtle’s nesting areas as “critical habitats” deserving of special protections.
The Center for Biological Diversity, Sea Turtle Oversight Protection and Turtle Island Restoration Network sued the federal government despite their admission that the green sea turtle population is growing, USA Today reported.
Plus, scientists at CBD published a 2019 study which found that 77 percent of marine mammals listed with the Endangered Species Act are recovering and that “no sea turtle populations decreased.”
The nesting locations of the North Atlantic green sea turtle rose from 62 in 1979 to 53,102 in 2017.
CBD reported that practical methods of protecting marine wildlife—including a “ban on killing turtles and harvesting eggs, protections for nesting beaches, and measures to reduce deaths in fishing gear”—were successful.
Despite the success of classic wildlife preservation, the three plaintiffs in the lawsuit are suing the federal government for failing to do enough about climate change.
The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in the Washington, D.C. District Court, claims that the Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service (collectively, Services) ignored regulations of the Endangered Species Act.
The Services found in 2016 that three distinct population segment (DPS) of the green sea turtles are endangered while eight DPSs are threatened.
Despite increases in the population of green sea turtles, the Services said populations remain threatened or endangered because of climate change—specifically sea-level rise and ocean warming—among other issues.
“Coastal nesting beaches are losing suitable nesting habitat due to sea level rise, as well as increased temperatures, which further jeopardizes the survival of green sea turtle,” said Richard Whitecloud, founding director of STOP, CBD reported in a press release.
“It is the government’s responsibility to protect this essential habitat to ensure these marine turtles survive,” Whitecloud said.
Yet the CBD’s own study rejects these fears, as the number of green sea turtle nests has grown rapidly during the past four decades.
The lawsuit says green sea turtles need protection under the Endangered Species Act “because they are threatened by habitat loss from coastal development, beach armoring and sea-level rise; disorientation of hatchlings by beachfront lighting; marine pollution; watercraft strikes; and as bycatch in fishing operations.”
The Endangered Species Act requires the Services to designate critical habitats for species that are threatened or endangered, but the 2016 report said, “Critical habitat is not determinable at this time but will be proposed in a future rulemaking.”
From the date of the “not determinable” finding, the Services had one year to propose a rule to name critical habitats, according to the Center for Biological Diversity’s Notice of Intent to Sue.
“To date, the Services have not issued a final critical habitat determination for any of the 11 green sea turtle DPSs,” CBD said.
The three environmental groups sued Interior Department Secretary David Bernhard; Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross; Margaret Everson, principal deputy director of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service; Chris Oliver, assistant administrator for fisheries at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration; and the National Marine Fisheries Service.

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Former President Barack Obama’s national security adviser, Susan Rice, defended her old boss from recent criticism for sending billions of dollars to Iran in a 2015 nuclear deal.

Rice was best known during her tenure with the Obama administration for crafting the debunked talking points that a 2012 siege on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya, was the result of a Youtube video.

She likewise deflected any culpability for the latest spate of radical Islamic aggression, instead pinning it squarely on President Donald Trump’s shoulders.

“President Trump decided recklessly to withdraw unilaterally from the nuclear deal and to impose so-called ‘maximum pressure’—crippling sanctions—and it was in the wake of that that we found ourselves in this escalatory cycle that’s led to where we are today,” she said.

Critics of the deal, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, noted that there were no verification or enforcement mechanisms in it to ensure that the rogue Iranian regime was acting in good faith and upholding its end of the bargain by dismantling its centrifuges used for uranium enrichment.

Israeli intelligence offered evidence that Iran, no longer subject to the sanctions and international pressure it had faced previously, was continuing to aggressively pursue nuclear-weapons capabilities in secret, prompting Trump to announce the withdrawal in May 2018.

But Rice accused Trump of undoing the good that Obama had accomplished in the region.

“In the years since the signing of the deal in 2015, up until President Trump’s unilateral withdrawal abandoning our allies against the advice of his advisers, there were no proxy attacks by Iranian proxies on U.S. personnel in Iraq,” Rice told MSNBC. “There were no efforts by Iran to attack our drones in the Persian Gulf or attack shipping.”

Tensions have since mounted after recent attacks on U.S. bases and the U.S. embassy in Baghdad resulted in the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who had flown to the Iraqi capital to offer tactical support for Iran-funded militia groups.

Iran launched missiles at a U.S. base in Iraq late Tuesday in retaliation, but Trump reported that the base sustained no casualties and minimal damage.

In a public statement Wednesday, Trump announced the U.S. would impose a new round of sanctions on Iran in response to the regime’s missile attacks, and he pinned the responsibility for them on Obama.

“The missiles fired last night at us and our allies were paid for with the funds made available by the last administration,” Trump said.

Trump charged that the Iranians were using $250 billion in unfrozen assets and hard cash—some delivered in pallets of American dollars to the country—to fund its ongoing terrorist operations against American allies and interests in the Middle East.

“Instead of saying ‘thank you’ to the United States, they chanted ‘death to America,’” Trump said.

“In fact, they chanted ‘death to America’ the day the agreement was signed,” he continued. “Then Iran went on a terror spree funded by the money from the deal and created hell in Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and Iraq.”

The Obama administration admitted in 2016 that as part of the Iran nuclear deal it had transferred $1.7 billion to Iran “entirely in cash.”

The administration also officially released tens of billions in frozen Iranian funds, which was reported to be around $56 billion, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Trump has cited the $250 billion estimate before but has not offered an accounting for the discrepancy in his figure and that which was officially reported.

Rice, who has previously attacked Trump’s foreign policy as “bats**t crazy,” claimed that Trump’s comments were “another series of despicable lies,” and said that Trump is “obsessed with President Obama” because of his “extreme weakness and insecurity.”

(Ben Sellers, Liberty Headlines) As part of a long-anticipated move, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is using the state’s newly elected Democratic legislature to enact a radical agenda.

On Thursday, he announced the latest component, his “Historic Justice and Equity Agenda,” which includes eliminating the legal protections for Confederate monuments in the state—where much of the fighting occurred during the Civil War.

The package also would confer new protections on black cemeteries—along with a quarter-million dollars in funding for their maintenance.

“Virginia’s history is difficult and complex, and it is important that we tell the full and true story of our past 400 years,” Northam said in a statement.

“When we have a complete understanding of how we got to the present, we are better prepared to improve our shared future,” he continued. “These proposals will help us to tell the story of people and places that for too long have been neglected or marginalized and continue to build a modern, diverse, and inclusive Commonwealth.”

Confederate heritage played a central part in the fatal 2017 protests in Charlottesville, which saw right-wing extremists clash with Antifa and other leftist groups over the city’s failed attempt to remove statues of Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

Other prominent monuments—notably a stretch on the eponymous Monument Avenue in the state capital of Richmond—have also come under attack since activists during the Obama era intensified nationwide efforts to remove any vestiges of Confederate history from the Southern states.

Many of the points on Northam’s recently announced legislative agenda come directly from a laundry list of demands conveyed to the governor last year by radical black activists—including a Charlottesville city counselor who helped spearhead the city’s previous monument-removal attempt.

The Virginia Black Politicos presented Northam with the demands as part of a quid-pro-quo deal in return for their support following the emergence of a racist yearbook photo.

Northam faced near universal calls to step down after reports of the photo, which showed individuals in blackface and KKK regalia on his personal page of a 1984 medical-school yearbook.

However, following a rape scandal involving his would-be successor, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, and a separate blackface concern from the third in line, state Attorney General Mark Herring, Democrats feared that standing on principle would cede the governorship to Republicans and quickly backtracked on their objections.

Northam has continued to deny knowledge of how the racist photo wound up on his yearbook page, insisting that neither of those depicted was him. However, he was identified in another photo with a friend wearing the same distinctive pattern of plaid pants as the blackface individual—suggesting the future governor may have been the hooded klansman.

Northam, who was elected as a moderate in 2017 and kept a low profile for much of last year while riding out the explosive scandal, seems now to be emboldened by it.

He was aided in his rehabilitation by last year’s state elections—during which national Democratic organizers and mega-donors targeted Virginia in hope of flipping its legislature blue prior to the next round of congressional redistricting.

Those efforts succeeded, giving state Democrats control of both legislative chambers for the first time in more than two decades.

Among the other controversial measures Northam and the Democratic General Assembly have threatened to enact is an extreme gun-confiscation proposal, which has met with considerable resistance. Nearly every county in the commonwealth has now passed resolutions declaring itself a 2nd Amendment sanctuary in defiance of the would-be regulations.

Undeterred, Northam and Herring set aside $250,000 in tax dollars from the state’s recent budget surplus to increase the Corrections Special Reserve Fund in anticipation of civil disobedience from gun owners.
