WATCHDOG: Dems’ Mail-In Voting Scheme is Ripe for Fraud

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Democrats are trying to exploit the coronavirus shutdown to make universal mail-in ballots the voting norm.

However, among the major flaws in their plan, the proposal would open the door to “massive fraud” and a “loss of faith in our elections,” according to a panel hosted by the conservative nonprofit Committee for Justice.

Congressional Democrats originally tried to include the expansion of mail-in ballots in the legislature’s $2 trillion relief package, passed last month. They sought $4 billion for spending on state elections, but when Republicans offered $140 million, they were accused of voter suppression.

This is a typical Democratic talking point, said Jason Snead, the executive director of the Honest Elections Project.

“Their immediate goal is to get as many votes into the hands of voters as possible, regardless of whether those voters are real,” Snead explained during at a Committee for Justice panel discussion on Thursday.

“What we’ve seen from the Left is a willingness to change any rule or any law or any practice if it prevents even the slightest friction for their ground game this November, in terms of getting out to vote,” Snead said.

Sowing Chaos and Harvesting Ballots

The vote-by-mail system, however, is ripe for “fraud”—especially since many states refuse to maintain their already corrupt voter rolls, said Catherine Engelbrecht, president of True the Vote.

These voter rolls are filled with voters who no longer live in the state, voters who aren’t even alive anymore, and voters who aren’t legally registered.

Under the Democrats’ proposed mail-in system, these voter rolls would become extremely problematic, Engelbrecht said.

“This is really the perfect storm to make sure that all the junk that’s in the registry gets mailed right out,” Engelbrecht said.

In at least 13 states, generally anybody can collect and deliver absentee ballots. Add this to the nearly 24 million voter registrations that “are no longer valid or significantly inaccurate,” according to the left-leaning Pew Center on the States, and you Engelbrecht’s “perfect storm.”

Mail-in voting also has another big problem: It’s almost impossible to require voter identification.

With absentee voting, voters must still apply for absentee ballots and provide proof of residence. But that’s not always the case with the broad-sweeping mail-in ballots Democrats are proposing, said James Bopp, founder of the Bopp Law Firm.

In fact, some states, such as Virginia, have audaciously sought to loosen existing safeguards for absentee ballots, such as witness signatures, even while they brazenly push for the mail-in system.

President Donald Trump is among those who have soundly rejected the idea that the U.S. will adopt a vote-by-mail system for November’s general election.

“Mail ballots — they cheat. OK? People cheat,” he said on April 7. “There’s a lot of dishonesty going along with mail-in voting.”

Bopp said Congress should pass a law preventing Democrats from implementing this system, since it’s clear that’s what they intend to do, he added.

There must be a balance, Bopp added, because COVID-19 has presented a particularly tricky challenge when it comes to voters’ rights. But there must be a better way to protect citizens’ rights to vote while also protecting the electoral system at large.

Health Risks Debunked

Wisconsin came under attack by the liberal media for holding its primary election despite the coronavirus shutdown.

The state’s Republican-controlled legislature made the call, rejecting Democrat Gov. Tony Evers‘s last-minute attempt to delay the voting.

Although the GOP legal challenge was upheld by the courts, it was widely denounced for “endangering” the health of the citizens.

But a recent study found that the feared spike in Wisconsin’s infection rate never materialized.

“Our study did not find any significant increase in the rate of new COVID-19 cases following the April 7, 2020, election post-incubation period, for the state of Wisconsin or its three major voting counties, as compared to the U.S.,” the Wisconsin State Journal of Madison reported last week.

Instead, coronavirus cases actually continued their downward trend, the researchers found.

“Our initial hypothesis of an increase in COVID-19 activity following the live election was not supported,” the researchers concluded.

Wisconsin’s successful election proves that mail-in voting is not the only option, even in a pandemic, Bopp said.

“We don’t want anyone to unjustly be denied the right to vote, but you can also be illegally given the right to vote,” Bopp explained.

“We have got to prevent them from making our elections unreliable,” he continued. “If they do that, then we’re done, and democracy is done, and there will be no faith in our elections.”

Sen. Rick Scott to Gov. Cuomo: Time to Answer for Your Dismal Fiscal Decisions

Sen. Rick Scott to Gov. Cuomo: Time to Answer for Your Dismal Fiscal Decisions

(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., confronted New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday over recent comments the Democratic governor made about him.

Earlier in the week, Scott penned an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal that criticized fiscally irresponsible states like New York for attempting to extort Wuhan-virus-related small-business funding to plug massive government pension debts.

Cuomo responded by lashing out during a media briefing on Wednesday.

“New York state bails you out every year,” he complained. “We bail them out every year … $29 million more every year into the federal pot that we don’t get back.”

But Scott wasn’t having it. Along with California and Illinois, New York is among the most financially mismanaged states in the country. So Scott essentially told Cuomo to grow up and make better decisions.

“Yesterday, Governor Cuomo used his daily briefing as an opportunity to attack me to distract from the fact that he wants his state bailed out by Florida taxpayers,” Scott said in a statement.

“Florida has made the tough choices that New York has refused to make for decades and can get through this crisis without a bailout,” he said.

Scott, formerly a top executive for a private hospital chain, first entered politics during the Tea Party election wave in 2010, serving two terms as Florida governor.

Despite immense pressure, he resisted Obamacare, helped lead a roaring economic recovery in the wake of the Great Recession, and oversaw one million new jobs.

Florida’s population exploded during his tenure and blew past New York’s.

In fact, many former New York residents and businesses fled to the Sunshine State for the more favorable tax rates and cost of living.

Among those who made the exodus were President Donald Trump, who famously exited his home state last year facing persecution from New York officials, and Blanca Ocasio–Cortez, the mother of far-left congresswoman Alexandria.

Scott previously dismantled Cuomo’s claims that New York contributed disproportionately to supporting other states, noting that his own state was now generously covering the health care costs of many retirees who paid massive amounts into New York’s system.

“How do you explain the fact that New York has 2 million fewer people than Florida and a budget twice the size of Florida’s?” he asked Cuomo in his statement.

Scott also bristled that Democrats have dismissed it as “somehow attacking states with significant cases of coronavirus” anytime someone questioned their attempted cash-grab of federal emergency funding.

“It’s irresponsible and reckless to take money from American taxpayers and use it to save liberal politicians like Cuomo from the consequences of their poor choices,” he said.

Calif. Gov. Newsom SUED to Halt $75M Virus Relief Payments to Illegals

‘The coronavirus challenge doesn’t give politicians a pass to violate the law…’

(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to send $75 million in taxpayer funds to illegal aliens in the form of “direct cash assistance.”

But the conservative legal watchdog Judicial Watch is suing to stop the illicit welfare payments.

Under federal law, illegal aliens are ineligible for state and federal public assistance benefits due to their unlawful presence in the United States. But according to Judicial Watch, Newsom is knowingly violating that clear red-line with his newly created “Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants Project.”

The Wuhan virus-related welfare initiative would send one-time cash payments of $500 per adult or $1,000 per household to 150,000 illegal aliens in California. The program would also cost nearly $5 million to administer and none of the cash benefits are being offered to law-abiding U.S. citizens living in the state.

“Governor Newsom has no legal authority on his own to spend state taxpayer money for cash payments to illegal aliens,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton in a Friday statement.

The lawsuit alleges Newsom overstepped his authority by creating a taxpayer-funded entitlement program through an executive action. Only state legislatures can create welfare programs through the normal legislative process, according to federal law.

The point is especially important given that the recipients are categorically ineligible unless special considerations apply, like a public health disaster.

Even then, that’s no excuse for California’s progressive governor to ignore unambiguous laws, says Fitton.

“The coronavirus challenge doesn’t give politicians a pass to violate the law,” he said.

“If California politicians want to give cash payments to illegal aliens, they must be accountable and transparent, and, as federal law requires, pass a law to do so,” Fitton added.

Newsom first floated the plan on April 15.

“We feel a deep sense of gratitude for people that are in fear of deportations that are still addressing essential needs of tens of millions of Californians,” he said.

College Students Sue for Tuition Refunds Due to COVID Campus Closures

‘The value of any degree issued on the basis of online or pass/fail classes will be diminished….’

(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) College students aren’t getting the college experience this year thanks to Wuhan virus-related campus closures. But universities have taken their money anyway.

Now, students are fighting back.

In North Carolina, for example, class-action lawsuits have been filed against UNC-Charlotte and the state university system in an attempt to claw back thousands of dollars per student for lost tuition and fees.

The lawsuits seek prorated damages given that classes were shifted to online forums rather than outright canceled. The lack of access to professors, multi-million-dollar labs, libraries, technology, extracurricular activities and events, and more, does not justify exorbitant tuition and fees, they say.

But the university system is largely unsympathetic.

Earlier this month, the higher-education bureaucracy’s president issued a memo stating, “universities should not consider refunds of other fees beyond spring semester housing and dining, and tuition fees for summer classes.”

For many students, the fee-without-service scenario is exacerbated by the fact that they’re paying for classes with student loans. Not only did they borrow to pay for overpriced online classes, but interest will be attached at a future date.

That’s no insignificant matter. College tuition and fees have skyrocketed over the past decade, leading to a punishing student debt crisis that now stands at $1.4 trillion.

But North Carolina universities are no exception. Students at Drexel University in Philadelphia and the University of Miami in Florida have also filed class-action lawsuits.

“There are two classes that aren’t even using the live-lecture format,” said Grainger Rickenbaker, a freshman at Drexel and lead plaintiff in a class-action suit against the university.

“It almost feels that I’m just tuning in for a podcast. It doesn’t really feel like the full classroom experience,” he said about the $54,500-a-year private research university.

Drexel administrators told students last month that there would be no discounted or refunded tuition or fees despite the shift to e-learning. Normally, online distance-learning classes cost up to 40 percent less than in-class credits, according to ABC News.

Undergraduate tuition and fees at the University of Miami cost about $51,930 a year. The corresponding lawsuit alleges, “the value of any degree issued on the basis of online or pass/fail classes will be diminished.”

The nation’s largest state university system is also under fire.

In addition to lost tuition, class action lawsuits targeting the University of California and the California State University system are seeking refunds for college gym memberships, and health and student centers where in-person services have been canceled.

Both lawsuits were filed in federal courts on Monday on behalf of 700,000 students.

A spokesman for the California State University system told higher-education website EdSource that it will “vigorously defend against [its] lawsuit.”

In all, more than a dozen other universities, including Michigan State, Columbia, Purdue, Colorado and Arizona State, have been besieged by lawsuits from angry students and their families.

In some cases, the schools also came under fire for accepting federal taxpayer subsidies from the recent $2.2 trillion CARES Act appropriations, which were earmarked for costs associated with students and the transition to online classes.

The higher education defense is that the Wuhan virus isn’t the fault of universities and the institution has suffered financial losses as well.

But that reasoning doesn’t cut it as far as many parents are concerned.

“The university’s economic challenges are no different and no more important than anyone else’s,” said Kelly Gibson, whose son attends Arizona State University and is one of the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the school.

“They have no right to keep money for services they are no longer providing,” she said.

19 Sens. Urge Treasury, Fed to Stop Banks from Blacklisting Gun-Makers

‘A vocal but small minority has weaponized federally-backed banks against politically disfavored businesses…’

19 Senators Urge Treasury, Fed to Stop Banks from Discriminating Against Gun Businesses

(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) Nineteen U.S. senators are urging the Trump administration and the Federal Reserve to crack down on financial institutions that are discriminating against law-abiding businesses in Second Amendment-related industries.

Sens. Kevin Cramer, R-ND, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, are leading the charge.

On Tuesday, the senators released a letter addressed to Treasury Secretary Steven MnuchinJerome Powell, chairman of the Federal Reserve; and Jovita Carranza, administrator of the Small Business Administration.

The senators sounded the alarm about large banks using “market dominance” to achieve de facto gun control.

But that’s not all. Politically motivated banks such as Citibank, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase and others are also targeting businesses in the oil and gas, coal and private corrections industries.

“A vocal but small minority has weaponized federally-backed banks against politically disfavored businesses that operate in good faith and compliance with the law, by denying them financial services based on political reasons that have nothing to do with creditworthiness,” the senators wrote.

Financial discrimination against private businesses for political purposes exploded under the Obama administration’s “Operation Choke Point,” which was designed to starve dozens of industries—particularly firearms and ammunition—from loans, credit and financial services.

Despite the change in administrations, top banks have continued to target businesses for political reasons, often at the behest of carrot-and-stick Democrats.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio–Cortez, D-NY, for example, has been open about pressuring banks to achieve left-wing agenda items that could never pass Congress.

“Huge update: JP Morgan & Wells Fargo have announced that they will no longer fund private prisons. How did this happen? Through organizing people & public pressure!” she tweeted last year.

In 2018, Citibank announced it would deny financial services to AR-15 manufacturers, and some top credit card companies alluded to flagging gun purchases that would effectively create a database of gun owners.

Many other examples exist, but the 19 Senators are intent on using the trillions of taxpayer dollars in Wuhan virus-related stimulus funds as leverage against the banks.

“We find it extremely disconcerting that, while the vast majority of SBA program lenders do not promote financial discrimination policies, many of the nation’s largest institutions currently do,” the Senators said.

Defiant NC County Admits State's Shutdown Order Supersedes Its Own

(Joshua Paladino, Liberty Headlines) A  North Carolina county that defied the state-mandated shutdown orders acknowledged that their recent order to reopen the county lacks force.
The Gaston County Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday to let businesses resume operation following a month of quarantine related to the coronavirus pandemic.
The order, which largely serves as a political and public health statement, took effect on April 29 at 5 p.m, WBTV reported.
But the commissioners recognized that Gov. Roy Cooper‘s executive decree to extend the state’s economy-wrecking shelter-in-place restrictions superseded their own.
“From a function standpoint, Gaston County Government will continue to follow all state laws, including Gov. Cooper’s executive order,” county officials wrote in a statement. “At no point would county leadership ask its staff or county residents to break the law.”
The order of the county commission would let those people who fear the virus or are susceptible to it—the elderly and immuno-comprised—stay home, while letting the healthy and courageous return to work.
Gaston County Commissioner Tracy Philbeck said that new information surrounding the coronavirus—the far-lower-than-projected case fatality rate, infection rate and hospitalization rate—shows that the response to it must be altered proportionally.
“Gaston County leadership supports the reopening of Gaston County,” he said. “Staying home is not a solution. People need to go back to work.”
He also said the nation has had time to prepare for the virus by stockpiling personal protecting equipment.
If the shutdown continues, Philbeck warned, “we will not have anything to come back to.”
He said he believes that citizens can work and stay healthy, as many states and foreign nations have shown.
Unfortunately, Philbeck’s comments and the county’s order caused confusion among the county’s residents and business owners, WCNC reported.
Alfredo Culebro, who manages Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Gastonia, Gaston County’s largest city, was “eager” to open the restaurant but then disappointed to realize that the governor’s decrees would turn him into a criminal for opening his doors.
“We was [sic] confused. We are still confused now,” Culebro said.
Culebro posted on Facebook about the potential reopening, so the Gastonia police showed up at his business to ensure that he would not violate the governor’s decrees.
“In spite of the governor’s order, we support and will stand with those that want to open their businesses and go to work,” Philbeck said.
It was not clear how the support would be made manifest amid the state’s criminalization of working.
Meanwhile, business owners in two other North Carolina towns, Apex and Roxboro, moved forward with their plans to open their stores in defiance of the state’s shutdown orders.
Matthew Myers, who owns Apex Tattoo Factory in Wake County, said he had no choice but to return to work on Wednesday, WRAL reported.
He said his business nears bankruptcy and his home nears foreclosure.
Myers announced on social media that his tattoo shop would open at 1 p.m. on April 29.
Fellow citizens reportedly snitched on Myers.
The police called him and warned him not to reopen, but he refused and the police arrested him shortly after opening.
“I respect the Apex Police Department. And it’s probably with the heaviest of heart of all that this has to happen in Apex,” he said. “I have to be the one that’s the first bee swatted.”
He faces 60 days in prison or a $1,000 fine.
Jessica Wesley said she would open The Room, a hair salon in Roxboro, on Friday at noon, WRAL reported.
She said she knew about Myers’s arrest but planned to open her business anyway.
“We’ve got to stand up and come together. I’m not doing this recklessly; I’m doing this with a plan of action,” Wesley said.
After she served a few customers, the police came and asked her to close voluntarily. She complied, WTVD reported.
“I feel like we’ve gotten our point across,” Wesley said. “So let’s just call it quits. My point is made, and I appreciate it.”

Cheapskate Bloomberg Finally Covers Health Care for Campaign Staff, but Not Salaries

Cheapskate Bloomberg Finally Pay Staffers Promised Health Care, But Not Salaries

(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) Michael Bloomberg is literally one of the richest people on earth, but he’s shortchanging thousands of loyal campaign staffers after spending more than $1 billion on his embarrassingly failed presidential campaign.

Now, facing a series of lawsuits, the former New York City mayor has finally agreed to pay for promised health-care benefits—albeit diminished COBRA plans—two months after he dropped out.

An email from Bloomberg’s corporate human-resources department informed former campaign workers on Monday about the health-care news. But it was conspicuously silent about unpaid salaries.

Bloomberg, whose net worth is $58 billion, lured an army of Democratic staffers and grassroots activists to his late-entry vanity campaign last fall with the promise of high-paying work and benefits.

He received fawning media coverage and agreed to pay workers through the general election regardless of whether he was the Democratic nominee.

Then, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., humiliated him during a nationally televised Democratic debate wherein she accused the financial-services guru of calling female employees “fat broads” and “horse-faced lesbians.”

His subsequent Super Tuesday election performance was so pathetic it effectively ended his campaign.

Monday’s health care announcement was “an important step in the right direction,” said Peter Romer–Friedman, an attorney for one of the staffers’ lawsuits against Bloomberg.

“But the Bloomberg campaign must keep all of the promises it made to induce staffers to join the campaign, especially the promise to employ the staffers through the general election,” he told Politico.

As Liberty Headlines previously reported, copies of job applications filled out by the former staffers confirm that the campaign offered “employment through November 2020.”

Another lawsuit against the billionaire progressive alleges fraudulent inducement and breach of contract, as well as unpaid overtime compensation.

“Thousands of people relied on that promise,” the lawsuit states. “They moved to other cities. They gave up school, jobs, and job opportunities. They uprooted their lives.”

Jason Smith, an attorney representing former aides in separate filings in Texas, told Politico that “Bloomberg just needs to make good on his promise to pay these folks through November instead of offering half-measures to try and make himself look better.”

Mich. Gov. Whitmer Loses Shut-Down Fight as Armed Citizens Storm State Capitol

‘This is the people’s house. You cannot lock us out…’

(Ben Sellers, Liberty Headlines) Spiteful and dismissive of the demands of conservative constituents, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer received the most forceful message yet over her draconian quarantine restrictions on Thursday.

NBC News reported that hundreds of protesters turned up at the most recent demonstration in the state capital of Lansing.

This time, some were armed.

Open-carry is permissible in Michigan as long as it is done with “lawful intent,” NBC said.

The event, organized by Michigan United for Liberty, was referred to as the American Patriot Rally and was part of a series of demonstrations, collectively called Liberate Michigan Week.

They crowded the capitol building as the legislature debated whether to extend the stay-at-home orders, demanding to be let in shouting, “This is the people’s house. You cannot lock us out.”

Some carried strongly-worded placards such as ” “Tyrants get the rope,” according to CBS Detroit.

Some protesters were allowed in the capitol building as rain came down, with police first taking temperatures using forehead thermometers.

However, state police assisted the legislature’s sergeants-at-arms in preventing them form storming the House floor.

Whitmer continued to dismiss the protests, saying that Republicans “are acting as though we’re in the midst of a political problem. This is a public health crisis.”

But Republicans in the legislature refused to comply with her demands, denying Whitmer her requested extension.

That means  that on May 16, restaurants may resume dine-in service as casinos, bars, gyms and other public spots proceed to re-open, said CBS.

Restraining Order Sought Against Wa. Gov. Inslee; ‘Criminalization’ of Bible Study

‘If a Washington citizen can visit a marijuana shop … in a responsible and socially-distanced manner, how are they not allowed to practice faith-based activities…?’

Washington Gubernatorial Candidate Requests Restraining Order Against Gov. Jay Inslee

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Republican gubernatorial candidate Joshua Freed filed a request for a temporary restraining order against Washington Gov. Jay Inslee after Inslee banned religious gatherings of any size.

Under Inslee’s shelter-in-place orders, Freed has been deprived of his constitutional rights, such as the right to worship and freely exercise his religion, the complaint states. The restraining order would restore this freedom and allow Freed to hold one-on-one prayer meetings that still adhere to health officials’ social-distancing guidelines.

“They will take place outdoors, with social distancing at all times followed, hygiene precautions taken, and the visitor bringing his or her own seat and removing it upon leaving,” the request explains.

“Further, the proposed meetings will be under an hour in duration,” it said, adding that congregants will voluntarily use personal protective equipment such as face masks. “Each person will wear PPE.”

These kinds of meetings are currently subject to criminal penalties, thanks to Inslee’s executive order.

The only activities considered “essential” by Inslee are grocery shopping, seeking medical services, caring for a family member, engaging in outdoor exercise, and/or working for an essential business.

These strict limitations prevent citizens from exercising their First Amendment rights, Freed alleged.

“If a Washington citizen can visit a marijuana shop or grocery store to buy goods in a responsible and socially-distanced manner, how are they not allowed to practice faith-based activities and have spiritual fellowship using the same precautions?” Freed said in a statement.

A restraining order is necessary because Freed “would suffer irreparable injury by his constitutional rights being deprived,” his request states.

Furthermore, Freed’s one-on-one Bible studies do not “cause harm to anyone,” especially since they “would comport with the CDC guidelines on such gatherings,” the request explains.

Freed has also filed a lawsuit against Inslee, asking the courts to overturn Inslee’s executive order and accusing Inslee of overstepping his bounds, according to the Seattle Times.

Rose McGowan Blasts ‘Cult’-Like Democrats Who Pretend to Be ‘Good Guys’

‘This is deeper than a cover-up…’

(Claire Russel, Liberty Headlines) Leftist actress Rose McGowan slammed the Democratic Party on Wednesday as a “cult” that pretended to be “the good guys.”

“I used to be a proud Democrat. I would have died for this damned country & its ideals. I was raised to be a proud Democrat,” she tweeted.

McGowan was one of the first women to come forward against disgraced entertainment mogul Harvey Weinstein and has been a vocal activist in the #MeToo movement.

She said that she joined the Democratic Party because she thought it shared her values, but the Democrats’ silence on the recent sexual assault allegations against presidential candidate Joe Biden have forced her to reconsider her loyalties, she explained.

“I was always told it was the Democratic Party that were the good guys,” she said. “Republicans have always been painted as the bad guys, and I’ve always seen them more as a cult, but now I realize so are the Democrats and the media. Macro and micro.”

Biden has been credibly accused of sexual assault by one of his former congressional staffers, Tara Reade.

But the story has received little attention from the media and few Democratic politicians have been willing to defend Reade.

“This is deeper than a cover-up,” McGowan said, without directly mentioning Reade or her allegation.

In another tweet on Monday, McGowan urged Biden to “answer Tara Reade” and then drop out of the presidential race.
