(Ezekiel Loseke, Headline USA) Sacramento, California, has experienced a 66% increase in homeless people over the last two years, despite extravagant spending meant to address the crisis.
In 2019, 5,500 homeless people camped out in Sacramento, but now almost 9,300 people live on the streets there, according to CapRadio. The 2019 numbers were the consequence of a shocking growth in the numbers of homeless people. In 2017 there were 2,659 homeless, and in 2017 there were 3,665.
Over 70% of the people surveyed were not in a shelter but rather in cars, tents or abandoned buildings, with more than 1,600 people living in tents and over 1,100 in shelters, both of which are five times higher than the 2019 numbers.
Black people make up a disproportionately high percentage of the homeless population. Despite being only 11% of the Sacramento population, black people make up nearly 33% of the homeless population, reported CapRadio. The study’s data was collected by volunteers who canvassed shelters, streets, and encampments countywide for two days.
Native Americans are also disproportionately represented in the homeless population, comprising 2% of Sacramento’s overall population but 7% of the homeless.
The social wreckage has come under the watch of California’s Democrat governor, Gavin Newsom, who once dubbed himself “the homeless czar,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
The self-proclaimed czar recently announced a new program to help the homeless, throwing $45 million at converting a hotel into a shelter, reported the Post Millennial.
Newsom has a habit of throwing money at the homeless population, but law enforcement has criticized this approach.
“It’s going to the same homeless industrial complex, and there’s no accountability,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
The same leftists governor also has a penchant for doling out taxpayer dollars to illegal immigrants, most recently approving the expenditure of $35 million for food stamps, with the total cost expected to hit $113 million by 2025.
Newsom also approved another $2.4 billion of taxpayer money to give health insurance to all of the state’s 3.3 million illegal immigrants.
