(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called out Democrat’s obsession with impeaching Justice Clarence Thomas, calling it “performative outrage,” the Daily Wire reported.
“Judicial independence is essential to our Republic,” McConnell said in remarks on the Senate floor Wednesday.
“It’s integral to the rule of law. And for the most part, since the Democratic Party’s last run at partisan court-packing in the 1930s, both parties have respected it,” he said.
“But lately, Washington Democrats have gone off the rails.”
McConnell related the stories of three different occasions in the last three years in which another branch of government has attempted to influence the Court.
One example he provided were public threats of sitting justices by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., regarding the “Louisiana Unsafe Abortion Protection Act” in 2020.
“I want to tell you Neil Gorusch, and you Brett Kavanaugh, you have unleashed a whirlwind, and you will pay the price,” Schumer said. “You won’t know what hit you, if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
McConnell continued on, defending Justice Thomas:
“This time, it’s a coordinated effort to nullify the presence of Justice Clarence Thomas on the Court… Washington Democrats are now trying to bully this exemplary judge of 30-plus years out of entire legal subjects, or off the Court entirely.”
“Make no mistake: this performative outrage is not in earnest,” McConnell said.
“This is a political hit, part of liberals’ years-long quest to delegitimize the Court,” he continued, adding that progressives have issued similar demands for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, as well as Justices Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett, to recuse themselves from certain cases.
“All because our laws and Constitution occasionally inconvenience Democrats’ radical agenda.”
Leftist members of Congress have been working overtime to either impeach Thomas or force him to recuse himself after reports that his wife, Ginni, was in communication with Trump officials on January 6, requesting they contest the 2020 election results.
“Justice Clarence Thomas is a great American and an outstanding Justice,” McConnell concluded.
“He is faithful to the text of our laws and Constitution. His writing is clear. His reasoning is rigorous and transparent,” he said. “I have total confidence in Justice Thomas’s impartiality in every aspect of the work of the Court.”
