(Headline USA) The Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that it will overhaul packaging labels for the pregnancy ending pill known as Plan B.
The federal agency said it will remove existing references on the contraception’s packaging that claim that the pill prevents a fertilized egg from implanting in the womb without new evidence.
The new labels are intended to distinguish the emergency contraception from abortion pills.
In a memo released Friday, the FDA argued that taking Plan B pills is not the same as an abortion, despite its current practice of labeling the pill as an abortifacient.
The formerly recognized abortifacient is popular. About a quarter of women say they’ve used emergency contraception pills at some point, according to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control released last year.
The move is likely indented to prevent regulation of Plan B by Pro-Life actors after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
