Cindy McCain, wife of the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., panned the GOP-backed election audit that is proceeding in Arizona’s Maricopa County.
“Listen, this whole thing is ludicrous, quite frankly. It’s ludicrous. And this also comes from a state party in Arizona that refused to be audited themselves on votes that were cast within their own party communications,” Cindy McCain told CNN this weekend.
“The election is over. [President] Biden won,” she added, speaking of the Democrat presidential candidate that she endorsed. “I know many of them don’t like the outcome, but, you know, elections have consequences. And so … this does not surprise me, you know, that things are just aloof and crazy out there right now with regards to the election.”
The Arizona state Senate hired an independent security consulting company, Cyber Ninjas, to head a forensic audit of Maricopa County’s ballots and voting machines earlier this year.
The Arizona GOP argued the audit was necessary to boost confidence in the state’s elections and ensure the integrity of the system, but Democrats have refused to accept the audit and have tried to get it stopped it repeatedly.
Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, called the audit a “farce” and demanded that Arizona Republicans end it.
“A group of Republicans are continuing to try to appease their base who refuse to accept that … Trump lost Arizona and that he’s not the president anymore,” she said.
Former president Donald Trump has voiced his support for the audit, encouraging Republican Gov. Doug Ducey to do everything within his power to make sure that it is conducted safely and efficiently.
“The Republican Party is demanding that Governor Ducey of Arizona immediately provide large-scale security for the brave American Patriots doing the Forensic Audit of the 2020 Presidential Election,” Trump said.
“Governor Ducey will be held fully responsible for the safety of those involved,” he added. “… The Democrats do not want to have this information revealed, and they will do anything to stop it. Governor Ducey must finally act!”
