China Ratchets Up Rhetoric Ahead of Pelosi’s Visit to Taiwan

(Tony Sifert, Headline USA) Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and a congressional delegation have landed in Taiwan in defiance of Chinese wishes, according to CNN.

“Pelosi’s stop in Taipei is the first time that a US House speaker has visited Taiwan in 25 years,” CNN reported. “Her trip comes at a low point in US-China relations and despite warnings from the Biden administration against a stop in Taiwan.”

In a statement issued the day of her arrival, Pelosi indicated her firm support for the Taiwan Relations Act, which she said commits the United States to support Taiwan in the midst of “intensified tensions” with China.

“We must stand by Taiwan, which is an island of resilience,” Pelosi said. “This vibrant, robust democracy — named one of the freest in the world by Freedom House and proudly led by a woman, President Tsai Ing-wen — is under threat.”

Pelosi went on to attack China for its “brutal crackdown against Hong Kong’s political freedoms and human rights” and warned the Chinese against doing the same in Taiwan.

“We cannot stand by as the CCP proceeds to threaten Taiwan — and democracy itself,” Pelosi said.

In response the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement condemning the visit and accusing the United States of breaking its international commitments.

“This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués,” the statement said. “It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The Chinese government warned the United States that it would “take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the U.S. Speaker’s visit.”

According to CNN, Pelosi will meet with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday.
