(Jacob Bruns, Headline USA) Earlier this week 41 Democrats in the House of Representatives made a final lame-duck push to bar former President Donald Trump from ever running for office again, Breitbart reported.
The Democrats attempted to justify their barring of the most popular president in U.S. history under the guise of the 14th amendment.
“Donald Trump very clearly engaged in an insurrection on January 6, 2021 with the intention of overturning the lawful and fair results of the 2020 election. You don’t get to lead a government you tried to destroy,” Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., wrote in a statement.
“The 14th Amendment makes clear that based on his past behavior, Donald Trump is disqualified from ever holding federal office again and, under Section 5, Congress has the power to pass legislation to implement this prohibition.”
Trump was acquitted by the U.S. Senate for charges that he fomented or engaged in any insurrection following House Democrats’s second effort at impeaching him in early 2021.
Moreover, efforts by Democrat activists to bring lawfare suits on the same grounds against several Republican members of Congress failed during the 2020 election cycle, with judges noting that Congress itself had passed legislation in 1872 that effectively dismantled the statute in question.
Cicilline was referring to section three of the 14th amendment, which reads:
“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President… who, having previously taken an oath… shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”
He and other Democrats are undoubtedly focusing in on the language of “insurrection or rebellion,” their favorite topic going on two years.
In Ciciline’s words, “you don’t get to lead a government you tried to destroy.”
Among the notables sponsoring the bill are Reps. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Tex., Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., Ted Lieu, D-Calif., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Minn.
