(Ken Silva, Headline USA) Democrat LaKesha Womack unseated Republican Rep. Tim Moore for his congressional seat in North Carolina on Tuesday, despite her facing a felony charge for failing to return a rental car.
Womack won the state’s 14th district, which covers part of Charlotte, with 51.1% of the votes to Moore’s 48.9%.
According to court records, Womack’s charge stems from her failing to return a rental car in October 2019. The charge was first reported by WBT in Charlotte.
A criminal summons was issued for her in January 2020, and reissued earlier this month.
“You unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did FAIL TO RETURN A 2019 TOYOTA COROLLA SEDAN,” the criminal summons says, adding that the value of the car is $20,000.
Womack was served the summons at one of her campaign events.

When asked about the matter, Womack said the following: “I can’t talk about that because it is an ongoing legal case. But I will say that if it were something much more serious, then I probably would have been served and charged much quicker than a week before early voting started.”
She has a court date set for Tuesday. The Charlotte Observer interviewed two attorneys who said the charge against her will likely either be pled down or dropped altogether.
“A felony conviction would not automatically disqualify Womack from serving in Congress, but it could significantly restrict her participation in legislative business,” the newspaper added.
