(Headline USA) House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said this week that Republicans will subpoena all 51 of the former intelligence officials who signed an open letter deceptively dismissing the Hunter Biden laptop story as Russian disinformation.
McCarthy, who is expected to become House speaker when the GOP takes the majority next year, said the media’s attempt to squash the Hunter Biden laptop story was “egregious.”
“Those 51 intel agents that signed a letter that said the Hunter Biden information was all wrong, was Russia collusion, many of them have a security clearance,” he told Fox News on Saturday.
“We’re going to bring them before a committee,” he continued. “I’m going to have them have a hearing, bring them and subpoena them before a committee. Why did they sign it? Why did they lie to the American public?”
Two of the former intelligence officials who signed onto the letter, which was published by Politico shortly before the 2020 presidential election, were former CIA Director John Brennan and ex-National Security Council Director James Clapper, both of whom were previously implicated in the notorious Russia collusion hoax against former President Donald Trump.
McCarthy slammed them for lying to the American public.
“Why did you use the reputation that America was able to give to you … but use it for a political purpose and lie to the American public?” he said.
The former intelligence officials’ letter has come under renewed scrutiny in light of the “Twitter Files,” a series of emails and internal documents made public by Elon Musk.
The first installment of the “Twitter Files” revealed top Twitter executives deliberately labeled the New York Post’s bombshell report on the Hunter Biden laptop story as “hacked material” to suppress circulation of the story, and kept their deliberations secret from then-CEO Jack Dorsey.
McCarthy hinted he’d be open to investigating Twitter’s role in the suppression of the Post’s report, but said he would want to turn the spotlight on to Facebook and Google as well.
“Now we need to start looking at Facebook, at Google. These now have become arms of the Democratic Party, arms of the Biden administration,” he said.
Some of McCarthy’s House GOP colleagues have pledged not to support his bid for the speakership, however, noting that he is too weak and prone to capitulation to the Swamp.
McCarthy’s resolve for investigating Hunter Biden was called into question last week as rumors resurfaced about his relationship to former roommate Frank Luntz, a pollster who claims to be Republican but whose name surfaced on the notorious laptop revealing him to be a close personal friend of the Bidens.
Reps. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., and Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., are among those who said they will not support McCarthy’s bid.
