Could Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough Mean an Energy Compromise?

Igniting the hydrogen plasma creates a fusion reaction that generates enough heat to maintain its core temperature without an external source....

(Chris ParkerHeadline USA) A new, unprecedented breakthrough in nuclear fusion just might offer the long awaited solution to the world’s dwindling energy supply, Newsweek reported.

Nuclear fusion essentially creates a powerful, self-sustaining energy source. In other words, it can produce energy without a fuel source.

The breakthrough was discovered by researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility in California.

How does this work? The same way our sun works; it doesn’t require a fuel source, yet sustains itself on a significant amount of energy.

Basically, when heavier hydrogen atoms collide with a significant amount of force, it forms a helium atom. The by-product is a massive surge of energy. Igniting the hydrogen plasma creates a fusion reaction that generates enough heat to maintain its core temperature without an external source.

The only exhaust created is helium. This also means another income source for energy companies that would otherwise see a significant reduction in revenue from fossil fuels. There is currently a dire shortage of helium.

If helium production is boosted, it may help with other shortages. For example, the world is also facing a significant microchip shortage due to supply chain challenges and global conflicts.

A boost in helium production could help boost microchip production without the need for expensive taxpayer-funded measures.

If the researchers’ predictions are correct, it can soon be used to power entire cities. No more fuel sources, and no harmful exhaust. Just clean, efficient energy that appeases climate activists without forcing the rest of us to sacrifice our lifestyles. It’s a win–win (or, at least, should be).

Granted, nuclear fusion solutions for transportation might take longer to reach the market.

However, a reduction in the use of fossil fuels could still reduce both pollution and fuel prices substantially. And, a reduction in the need for fuel could certainly increase our energy independence. Again, a win–win.
