House Republicans Roast Mayorkas Over Southern Border

'Secretary Mayorkas helped create the worst humanitarian crisis in modern American history, and he did it illegally and on purpose... '

(Tony Sifert, Headline USA) Congressional Republicans led by Brian Babin of Texas and Jim Banks of Indiana have written a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in which they accuse President Biden’s immigration chief of endangering American lives and undermining the nation’s sovereignty, according to the New York Post.

“We write to address your actions to dismantle the security of our nation’s southern border and disregard for the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws,” the letter began. “Your actions have willingly endangered American citizens and undermined the rule of law and our nation’s sovereignty.”

Babin and Banks pointed in particular to the DHS Secretary’s refusal to comply with several court orders to continue President Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which requires asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while waiting for a court hearing.

Mayorkas’ intransigence will be the subject of oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, according to SCOTUSblog.

In Biden v Texas, the issue before the Supreme Court is whether DHS is required to continue implementing the Remain in Mexico policy, and whether the 5th Circuit was mistaken in holding that Mayorkas’ termination of the program “had no legal effect.”

The Congressmen also argued in their letter that Mayorkas “wasted billions in taxpayer dollars” when he “unilaterally terminated existing contracts for the construction of border barriers,” and they went on to demand that he “immediately take all legal and necessary actions at your disposal . . . and bring your agency into compliance with the laws passed by the United States Congress.”

In conclusion, Babin and Banks posed three questions to Mayorkas: (1) by what authority is he releasing “inadmissible aliens” into the United States; (2) whether he has “operational control of the southern border; (3) how much it costed taxpayers to stop construction on “physical barriers along the southern border.”
