Rep. Paul Mitchell, R-Mich., slammed President Trump for alleging the results of the 2020 election are fraudulent.
Trump claimed over the weekend that the election was “rigged.” In response, Mitchell said the president should drop his claims of widespread voter fraud “for the sake of our nation.”

Mitchell does not plan to seek reelection after his term concludes, but he is not the only Michigan Republican who has criticized the president.
Last week, Red. Fred Upton, R-Mich., told CNN that Democratic candidate Joe Biden won Michigan fairly.
“You know what? The voters have spoken. No one has come up with any evidence of fraud or abuse. All 83 counties have certified their own election results,” Upton argued.
“You have to let those votes stand. People know the process. … I voted absentee. So did my wife. So did my parents. So did my brother and his wife. The process has been in place for a long time. It works. And there’s no issues of fraud anywhere,” he added.
GOP members of the state on Tuesday heard evidence suggesting otherwise, with eyewitnesses who signed sworn affidavits testifying that they witnessed voting machines that were illegally connected to the internet and other actions that strongly undermined the integrity of the Nov. 3 election.
Others alleged during the hearing that they experienced voter intimidation and ballot harvesting throughout the election process.
However, state Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfied, both Republicans, dismissed calls to appoint pro-Trump electors without additional proof.
“We will follow the law and follow the normal process regarding Michigan’s electors, just as we have said throughout this election,” the two Republican state lawmakers said in a joint statement.
