(Molly Bruns, Headline USA) Former Alaska Department of Administration commissioner and Trump-backed candidate Kelly Tshibaka is leading Alaska’s Senate race by a wide margin, Brietbart reported.
A recent poll shows Tshibaka leading incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski, with a shot to get over 50 percent in a four-way field.
Conducted from March 14 to March 16, the survey found that Tshibaka comes in with 45.4 percent and Murkowski at 28.7 percent. Murkowski is closely followed by a Democrat candidate, with a Libertarian trailing in last.
Alaska has changed its voting system and this year will feature a new ranked-choice system with all four candidates on the ballot in November.
That will come after a primary in August where every candidate, regardless of party, will file, face off, and the top four candidates will advance to the November election. The November election will allow voters to rank their choices. To win, a candidate will need to get over 50 percent of votes, plus one.
Murkowski, 64, helped put this new system in place in an attempt to protect her seat from a primary challenger.
Murkowski, who has been in office for 20 years, has never reached 50 percent in any general elections for the Senate and was nearly defeated in 2010, when she lost in the GOP primary to candidate Joe Miller. She managed to keep her seat after mounting a successful write-in bid.
Tshibaka reacted to this poll on Twitter:
No matter how much special interest groups try to impact this election, it will always come down to Alaskans. This is Alaska’s voice, not D.C. insiders. Let’s keep up the momentum! https://t.co/SGjVHkJe9R
